Boys names...not a clue!

Just as it says in the subject! We are happy with quite a few girls' names but when it comes to boys, neither of us can even think of one that really fits the bill (no pun intended!). The only criteria are that we'd like something that's a little out of the ordinary but nothing too weird! Suggestions please?

I do like Oisin but don't have an Irish link so don't know whether we could get away with it? Also like Miles. Frustrating thing is that the only ones on here I've been close to falling in love with DH has immediately ruled out! AARGH! Just going to call 'him' BOY.

woo Miles is my DS! just sneaked that in there.

it is a normal enough name but not used much. our local registrar had never had one in lots of years. :-)

your criteria sound similar to mine!

Have exactly the same problem! Lots of girls names i like, but not so many boys.. Find im less inclined to go with more unusual, out there names for boys and tend to stick to slightly more traditional ones. Think girls can pull unusual names off a bit easier! But would still like something a bit different for a boy so its difficult.. Have a billy already so has to go with that too. Names i like for a boy, max,maxwell.. Teddy,ted.. Lucas or luca, also quite like theo or leon. Good luck! X

Having same problem with six weeks to go!

Chester
Emerson
Otto
Kingsley
Arthur

Takver · 23/11/2010 19:00

Kester
Christy
Kit (I would use all of the above as a nn for Christopher, as I rather like a 'sunday name' on the birth cert.)

Rafael
Xavier
Jerome nn Jem
Macsen (Welsh, but I think would be fine in England, pronounced just as it looks)

StephA · 25/11/2010 13:38

I'm stuck too... he will be here in 5 weeks and no names are really sticking. Somehow you can be more 'frivolous' with girls names than with boys.

Also for me the nice ones have been taken - we already have a Quentin, Xavier, Andrew, James and William in the close family so those are out.

I have a secret weakness for funny ancient names like Anselm, Prosper, Athanasius, Cassiel, and Balthazar - but I think those will have to be second names, no? Would an Anselm survive the first day of school?

And I have a prejudice against trendy Biblical names like Josh, Nat, Zach, Elijah, Jake, Ben, etc. You know that indie band "Suburban Kids with Biblical Names"? Yeah, that.

So we will probably have a shortlist ready for when he is born, and then hopefully he will help us by being so very obviously a " " . I think you get about 3 weeks before you have to register a name? So within 3 weeks he needs to display a strong personality!

mopsyflopsy · 25/11/2010 22:31

I think Balthazar is lovely, nickname Baz or Bazzy.

nelly83 · 25/11/2010 22:53

I like

Alexander nn Xander

Joesph

I work with children and have heard some fairly unusual names lol! How about ...

Tempest

Hope these help!

MelinaM · 25/11/2010 22:58

Thanks for the Balthazar approval!! - I might have another go at convincing my partner to go for it!

Inspirachion · 29/11/2010 08:31

Our DS is Rory
it's the anglicised version of a gaelic name
means red king and brave
not in top 100 but still a known name iyswim

StephA · 28/02/2012 10:14

I chickened out on Balthazar, unfortunately. We were quite close to calling him Magnus, but that name seemed so huge and massive for such a little wee thing. We dithered for days about it - I had hoped that when he was born it would somehow become obvious what he should be called, but it didn't. So we went with Matthew, instead, which was one we'd sort of both liked during our endless discussions. I didn't realise it would be so hard to choose a name! It is SUCH a big responsibility.

puzzletree · 28/02/2012 10:33

Loving all these boys names. I'm expecting DS3 and it's so hard to choose a third boys name. We have Lucas and Toby already. Here are lots of other names I like but for whatever reason we probably won't use (I think we'll probably go for the super popular Jack!):
Noah
Jonah
Isaac
Seth
Rex
Caspar
Jasper
William
Oscar
Henry
Peter
Dillon
Joseph
Arthur
Alex
Frank
Edward
Eric
Hector
Patrick
Laurence
