what other names do you like?

I'm stuck. Still.

Getting fed up with not having a clue.

Not Scottish but I do love the name Vincent!

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 15/11/2010 11:08

Hmmmm - this baby naming business is tricky... Mind you English accents can do horrid things to lovely names too.

No, live in UK, but am American. DH is English. So yes, lovely names like Alistair and Hector become "Al-i-STAIR" and "Hec-TOR" with no soft, thrown away consonants at the end. They sound very harsh with American accents, I think. Pity.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 15/11/2010 10:52

It doesn't help that it's my ring tone, perhaps!!

Hmm - Hector in an American accent might not sound right, I suppose. Do you live in the States?

thereisalight, you and I could be friends. We like Hector, too, but the song is a little too recent, maybe? Dunno. Silly reason not to choose a name, I suppose. I can hear my Americans now, though. "Hector??" Sigh. Cultural differences are as annoying as non-compliant DHs.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 15/11/2010 10:47

You see, if I'd just called my cat Badger, instead of Angus all those years ago, I wouldn't be here now...

I also love Hector (and I'm a huge Morrissey fan) and I think the reason DH isn't keen is because of the song 'First of the Gang' (and he doesn't like Morrissey - still I point out that there's a Smiths song called 'William, it was really nothing' (DH's name) and I still love my DH (even though he's got rubbish taste in names for the most part).

So a new DH would offer up the possibility of a less opinionated (aka wrong) man plus a new surname, should you wish, which would sound right with Heath.

Solution.

meltedmarsbars · 15/11/2010 10:42

I had a Highland Garron called Angus. He had great feathered feet and a tail that touched the ground. He died when I was 18.

And my Dad is a Hector.

So I like those names. Smile

JFly · 15/11/2010 10:41

Good plan! Beat them into submission.

Heath is lovely, but also no good with our surname. A more cooperative DH is definitely the answer.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 15/11/2010 10:40

I've suggested Heath - but it doesn't sound right with our surname.

I think you're right about a new DH, though :)

jumpyjack · 15/11/2010 10:39

These are all great names. Clearly you need a new DH.

I adore Hamish and Angus, and I offer up Heath as another favourite which I wasn't "allowed" to use.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 15/11/2010 10:29

You could hit them with a stick until they got it right. That would be my suggestion - but then that could explain why I don't have so many friends!! Grin.

Hmmm, yes, Dougal has a certain canine quality, too. Having said all that about dog names, these suggestions have helped me and DH, too, so thanks everyone!

Lorcan and Frazer/Fraser are contenders now, if we have a boy. How would you stop my American family and friends saying "Frasier", though? That is my only concern with that name.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 15/11/2010 10:03

More great suggestions from you all - thanks

DH says he likes Dougal - I think of dogs and Father Dougal (and funnily enough I call DH Father Dougal sometimes as he gets te same expression on his face and goes far, far away...).

Not sure I'd actually use it though.

Ooh, you have very similar tastes to me I think. If it helps names I considered are

Douglas
Fraser
Campbell
Murray
Alexander (Sandy)
Ross
Rory
Robin

Though I think the last 3 are cause I couldn't have them. You always want what you can't have

LisMcA · 14/11/2010 22:01

Have you thought of Struan? V scottish but not too popular

freerangeeggs · 14/11/2010 21:34

Oooh, Theo is very handsome. Theodore Hamish or Theodore Angus would be fantastic names.

I love Nancy too.

Be sure to let us know what you choose! :)

emmyloo2 · 14/11/2010 17:38

Rory, Fraser?

Hamish is one of my favourites. DH vetoed it though.

AnnOnimous · 14/11/2010 14:17

What about Rhodri?

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 14/11/2010 12:26

Had an ex-BF called Roderick Confused so definitely not on my list!

I know what you mena about the dog's names - so it surprises me how few of the DH likes - I think he'd rather have a labrador!!

OP posts:
YeahBut · 14/11/2010 10:21

Magnus

YeahBut · 14/11/2010 10:21

Roderick (Roddy, Rick or Rory)
Prentice
Campbell
Cameron
Ellis
Gregor

JFly · 14/11/2010 10:13

I find all the "-us" names (Fergus, Angus, Seamus, Rufus, etc) are dog names to me. That's why DH likes them. Probably would rather we have another dog than DC. Hmm :)

What about Milo? OH and I love Murray, but again is it a dog's name? I like Theodore, too, but am partial as it's my Dad's name. DH doesn't really like it, though.

I'm due in 2 weeks and still only have 2 OK boy names on our list. Hoping it's a girl as have at least 5 to choose from there.

Good luck!

diddl · 14/11/2010 10:05

Sholto is fantastic.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 13/11/2010 23:25

Thank you everyone - I really appreciate the suggestions.

I really like Niven - not sure DH would go for it - and I knew someone with a cat called Niven (that wouldn't put me off). Will run it by him to see what sort of response I get!

I've tried Sholto. Got the Hmm face.

DH has decided (after vetoing it previously, of course) that he likes Theo as well as Angus. I suppose it would be Theodore in full on BC. Not too sure about that, but it does shorten to Teddy/Ted too which is good as that was my Dad's nn in the army and I wanted to reference him in some way without actualy using his proper name (I've toyed with Rory and Rufus as they are the same derivation, but DH doesn't like Rufus and has a cousin called Rory).

Funny thing is, I once had a rabbit named Theodore. But then we also have a DD called Nancy and I was had a budgie by the same name - so, as you can see, there is a trend...

This will be my last DC - so I won't have to worry in future - but I should've made sure I gave my pets proper 'pet' names!
