It feels like we're going around in circles and we have resigned ourselves to the fact that we won't have chosen for certain before the birth.
We do however have our final shortlist of five names and so I thought I'd see what all of you lovely people think :)

Fergus
Jasper
Ezekiel
Sidney
Titus

The middle name will probably be Henry, William, George or James, depending on which goes best with the first name we choose.

So, which is best??

Oh, go for it!

Like Fergus James.
Or Fergus William.
Or Fergus George!

ellesabe · 11/11/2010 19:29

Thanks so much for all of the feedback! I hadn't thought about the girlification of Sidney so that's definitely worth bearning in mind and it's interesting to hear which of the names seem more 'out there' to different people.

DH really loves Ezekiel and whilst I LIKE it and am very familiar with the name, I realise it's quite an odd name to a lot of people.

I think I prefer Fergus which was our original choice... hmmmm...

Because they are similar to yellow jasper?

Happy to be corrected if it´s not so.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 09/11/2010 13:51

Why, diddl? Yellow?

I know in Italy the word for wasp is Vespa - I sort of assumed it was because of that.

diddl · 09/11/2010 13:36

Wasps are sometimes called Jasper because of their colour, aren´t they?

welshandproud · 09/11/2010 13:01

Sidney is a great name (I wanted sidney or stanley but we ended up with a Lucy instead!)Grin

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 09/11/2010 12:43

Wasps are known as Jaspers where I grew up - I never thought that was a meaning of Jasper though.

gillybean2 · 09/11/2010 06:07

Don't pick Jasper! Coz I picked that thinking it's be rare/unusual and now we know of 6 in this area Grin

On your list I like Jasper Fergus and Sidney (he'll get called Sid though which makes me think of the british gas advert (Don't forget to tell Sid).

Btw Jasper doesn't mean wasp and isn't a dog's name Hmm It means precious treasure (or variations on this depending on where you look.

I just check Fergus on the above site and it says it means 'manly'. So I think you need to look at your baby and see what suits him. I had ds's name in mind before he was born, but until I looked at him I didn't give him his name as I wanted to be sure it was right for him IYKWIM.

Zeke is quite cool, although Ezekiel is quite far out there. You'd need to live in the right sort of place / be in quite a quirky family to carry it off I think.

Our family dog was called Titus, to me it belongs in the cool names you can call your dog but not your child category.

I like Sid because of Six Dinner Sid (probably all time favourite book we read to the children when they were small). But I do only know female Syds (well only one so not very representative!).

Having said that a shortlist of five seems perfectly respectable, and I'd wait and see which one grabs you most when your ds is born.

Combos that sound best I think are:

Fergus James/George
Jasper William
Ezekiel James/Henry
Sidney George/James/William
Titus James/George

loonies · 08/11/2010 21:54

Fergus and Jasper are good. Sidney is a bit more out there but I think I quite like it. The others are too out there. Although perhaps Ezekiel would be ok if nickname Zeke was used

Rhubarbgarden · 08/11/2010 18:57

Fergus.

Psammead · 08/11/2010 16:53

Fergus or Jasper. Sidney as an outsider. The other two are not to my taste.

Thissideofchannel · 08/11/2010 14:50

All lovely names! Favourites are Titus, Ezekiel and Sidney.

ThatllDoPig · 08/11/2010 10:51

I like the first three. Fave is Ezekiel.
What kind of surname do you have? Fairly average or unusual to match?

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 08/11/2010 10:06

Titus gets my vote

SprocketRocket · 08/11/2010 09:00

Jasper. But not Jasper George of Jasper James

You don't need to choose before the birth! When dd was born it was great to be able to have a look at her and choose a name. She ended up with a name that i had never even considered because it suited her.

Faaamily · 08/11/2010 08:52

Ezekiel is great.

piscesmoon · 08/11/2010 08:49

The middle names are lovely but I don't like any of the first name choices.

diddl · 08/11/2010 08:34

Fergus & Jasper are both lovely imo.

Minione · 07/11/2010 21:48

Fergus - nice, best on your list
Ezekiel -- quite like, Zeke is a cool nickname but don't thimk I would ever be brave enough to use it.
Sidney - ok
Jasper - dog's name
Titus - No! Reminds me of Shakespeare and not in a good way (his worst play!)

Fergus James and Fergus Henry sound lovely

Clary · 07/11/2010 21:29

I am not keen on Titus or Ezekiel tbh.

The other three are nice tho as Sequins says, be prepared for the fact that Sidney is often used now as a girl's name (American influence?) in case that would bother you.

RorysRacingMa · 07/11/2010 21:28

ds2 was very nearly an Ezekiel nn Easy

Aside from that my fave name on your list is Fergus - just divine in my book

Deemented · 07/11/2010 21:27

Ezekiel is best by far.

Jasper is a dogs name.

cece · 07/11/2010 21:25

I wanted Sidney for all of my DC but sdaly DH vetoed it every time!

TBH Sidney is the only one I love. Really not very keen on the others.

Please don't call a baby Jasper - that is a name for wasps.

Jojay · 07/11/2010 21:22

Jasper Jasper Jasper Jasper Jasper(biased Grin)
