experiences of changing DCs name - when is it too late?

I changed DS's name at around 5 months. I had also stressed been really about it for months as I just didn't like the original name (I caved in agreed to DH's choice just after the birth). I didn't like saying it and didn't really like telling people what it was.

In the end we added a new name to the front, so he has 2 middle names now. Like skippingturtle, I was mortified at the thought of telling people, but everyone took it it in their stride. My family could see how much it had been upsetting me, and were supportive with the change. DH was happy to change it as he could see how much it was upsetting me. It was easy to do as it was under 12 months from the original registration, so not really upheaval in that sense.

I felt much better as soon as we decided to go for it and make the change, and am glad we did it. Although I don't like the original name, I think I am glad we kept it as a middle name, as I feel that this way we haven't taken it away from him - I'm not sure if that really makes sense though

I changed DD's name at 3 months. I really like the name we gave her, but not for her, IYSWIM, and kept wishing we'd chosen something else from our shortlist.

I was really stressed about it, and winced inwardly every time anyone use her old name, as I just felt it was wrong. After we changed it I felt MUCH better.

In terms of telling people, yes, I was mortified!

How old is your DC, OP?

DS surname was added to to make it double-barrelled as he had his fathers and its me whos raising him so kind of gave us some connection (form filling etc).

He was really pleased and we made a fuss of it, had dinner out to celebrate etc.

Ifs its a really young child I guess they'll never know or remember so couldn't see it being a problem tbh.
