dh loves the name felicity but i dislike this name. he likes it beacuse it's sweet ,feminine yet fun and grown up.dh insists he likes no other name . i dislike it because i find it to sickly sweet and a bit wishy washy .

i love the name cecily because it's sweet , feminine, yet grown up and serious. i have a list of other names i like and could compromise on but dh has vetoed them all. he dislikes it because it's too old fashioned and unusual

in reality they are both very similar names in terms of how they sound sound ,femininity etc

dh after initially insisting on felicity has now agreed i can call her cecily

however , i don't want , to railroad dh into a name he dislikes. i really want to find a compromise we can both love.

problem is dh will not come up with any suggestions and i have given up trying to find a compromise.

so do your best and find us the name of our dreams or at least a few suggestions i can put to dh

love cordelia but you've guessed dh doesn't

strangely augusta is growing on me .i think its a great name and sounds very strong and determined. it's definitely got presence and gussie is very cute .not sure i'm brave enough though and not sure dd would thank me for it .

strangely he loves augusta and yet the name matilda is too strong and warlike for his little girl . it reminds him of a warrior queen !

murder diminished responsibility or divorce on the grounds of irreconcilable differences is beginning to feel like an option !!

MerryMarigold · 03/11/2010 20:50

WINIFRED! Shock Was he very fond of all his great aunts?

EldritchCleavage · 03/11/2010 12:31

Sorry smiling!

maktaitai · 02/11/2010 22:22

I do like Felicity but you can't just fall for a name you don't like.

TBH I would say if he has agreed to cecily, go with it Smile, let it lie and see if she looks like a cecily when she comes out.

I always love Mirren when it is suggested on here, any good?

Also I have never met a man who doesn't like Rachel (am old though) - it was dh's only choice and actually I got into it, although we had a boy anyway so never used it.

smilingserenely · 02/11/2010 22:11

he's now suggesting winifred as he had his tonsils out at st winifreds . why did i marry a man with such terrible taste .

thankyou merry really nice to know others think cecily is a lovely name . i also agree that as dh is being so unhelpful and won't compromise ,he is waiving his right to choose.

Charis - Latin for Grace
Cerys - welsh version, think it means love
Florence
Meredith

OK, another suggestion. Print this thread off for dh and ask him to pick his top 10 from them. You do the same. Regardless of whether he likes them or not, simply in order of preference. If Cecily is still second (or third if Augusta is in there!), then that's obviously the one you both like the best...

(though am sure you have some time. I didn't name dd for a few days after her birth).

MerryMarigold · 02/11/2010 21:44

Cecily is lovely. I wanted to call my dd that, but someone from my MN antenatal thread thought of it and I didn't want to steal it in case she had a girl (she did, so just as well!). You're not being daft. And if dh doesn't take any action, or become more positive about discussing different names, then I think you have every right to go ahead with Cecily. Try a single syllable middle name - it sounds fantastic. Cecily Jude, Cecily Kate etc.

smilingserenely · 02/11/2010 21:40

merry have suggested he write down a list of names but he obstinately refuses to do even that .
he's been so negative i'm not sure whether i'm being daft to like cecily and really think we'll never agree on this.

Augusta can only be the name of a Great Aunt!

Tell dh he has no taste! Would he go for Shakespearean? Ancient Greek? Give him a list of 10 names you like and tell him he needs to give you a list of 10 names as well. That should start as a brainstorm and stop him being stuck on one or two. Otherwise it is not fair for you to suggest loads which are just vetoed.

Mamalade · 02/11/2010 19:49

Marielle,it's glamorous, serene(like yourself!) and if I'm not mistaken, beautiful with your surname!

MadameCastafiore · 02/11/2010 18:49

Harriet?

expectingno3 · 02/11/2010 18:42

I also thing Cecily is a lovely name, and CeCe as a nn is cool, or Lily, but thats very popular.
Celeste is lovely, but just twigged your sirname and it wouldn't really go!What about

Eloise
Ellice
Alice/Alecia/Alysia

Cortina · 02/11/2010 17:57

Ermengarde? :) I rather like Ermengarde.

smilingserenely · 02/11/2010 17:33

vivienne lovely but with our surname she would have a very famous fashion designer namesake

given dhs name preferences (the only other name in the universe he likes is augusta) i worry that if i suggest ethelburga, ermintrude etc dh would think these were great names and insist on baby ethelreda .

OP posts:
EldritchCleavage · 02/11/2010 17:00

Helen
Rachel
Dinah
Syrie
Laurance (French, innit)
Clemence (ditto)
Victoria
Claudia

or, go all Anglo-Saxon on his ass
Ethelburga
Wilfrieda
Winifred
etc.
He won't go for them but if you look serious it might frighten him back to one of your tamer options?

You've my heartfelt sympathies as DH and I were like this with girl's names. We finally finally decided on one, then had a boy anyway! Actually, even with boys' names we only had one we both liked so if we have another boy I don't know what's going to happen. Let the grandfathers fight to the death, perhaps. Whoever's father is still alive at the end gets to pick the name...

Komondor · 02/11/2010 16:51

Smiling Serenely, I have had to dismiss countless names because of DH disliking them. Similarly I have dismissed many of his suggestions.

You have to choose a name you both like, dont let him railroad you.

What about Vivienne?

Cortina · 02/11/2010 16:43

Leonora - beautiful, underused and only 8 in 2009.

smilingserenely · 02/11/2010 16:28

love so many of these names but dh likes none of them. he can murder a name at a 1000 paces .
he really likes nothing even slightly unusual and/or he has a secret crush on felicity kendal . maybe i should suggest kendal !!

especially like genevieve , clemency, camilla, marianne and phoebe and xanthe .can't use lydia as it is in the family already

also like muriel and mariella

wondering if we can get round the impasse with felicity nn fee or feebee as dh will refuses to budge and i'm fed up trying to move him.
