Husband insistent on Elvis

Apart from hoping against hope that it's a girl (!) he's been on about this name for YEARS - reckons he went all soft on me when DD was born and let me choose, so this time around it's his turn.

Are my instinctive reactions (against the name) right?!?!?

I know two.

One is 10yrs old and one is 3yrs old, neither are of English parentage.

Yellowflowers · 25/10/2010 16:45

I think Elvis's brother was Jesse which I like but DH has vetoed

sparkleshine · 25/10/2010 15:31

Partyof52010----I actually like the name Presley for a girl, it's quirky and not sickly sweet but not too tomboy ish iykwim. I'm sure she suits it.

Like the Aaron suggestion. But not Elvis please, or any other variation suggested. It's awful and will forever be associated with the singer and presume u are both fanatics who wanted to pass that name onto your son.

DivineInspiration · 25/10/2010 15:30

I don't think Elvis is so bad. I guess you'd get the "Ooh, Elvis Presley fan are you?!" comments from people the first time you mentioned it, but after that it would wear off, surely? It's sort of a limited-ribbing name.

Obv if you truly truly hate it then same refusal applies as to any other name you hate.

mathanxiety · 25/10/2010 15:18

Or Rex?

mathanxiety · 25/10/2010 15:18

Roy?

suburbophobe · 25/10/2010 14:56

Elvis is quite a common name in Jamaica, also there's Elvis Costello, and I read that Roman Polanski's son is called Elvis

CuppaMouldyBatBallsBrothJanice · 25/10/2010 14:43

Aaron?

Elvis' middle name.

Yellowflowers · 25/10/2010 14:35

Sign, I love Horatio.

Elvis though - well you know I suspect after a lot of laughter at the beginning people would just get used to it.

But kinder not to...

telsa · 25/10/2010 14:32

I know of one little Elvis and one Presley (a boy). Really - it could be part of a trend - and what wrong with venerating the king!

allyfe · 25/10/2010 11:45

NO!!!!!!!!! Our cat is called Elvis. Suits him very well. Get that Goldfish.

But a child? Can you imagine his teenage years??? I can't believe that you know two already.

Partyof52010 · 25/10/2010 10:53

Right, I'm going to come right out and say it- I have a Presley. And she is a she, not a he.

What happened was thus; Pregnant with first child. Always wanted a different name, but not a moonbeam or whatever. Sitting waiting for scan, flicking through 'hello' and I read that Cindy Crawford has a son called Presley. I thought it was kind of quirky. I'm not a huge Elvis fan, although I do like him. Mentioned it to DH who went very pale and told me that he would rather die than have to tell his mother we'd named precious firstborn after (in her view) a hideous rockstar. This cemented choice in my head.

Wrangling went on for several weeks (about20 to be exact) when DH said he would consider it for a girl. Don't know why. his only explanation was that it sounded too pretty for a boy. So she was a girl, and we looked at her long and hard and decided to go with it.

First few weeks were really hard, having to tell everyone her name. Oddly enough my Grandma loved it. My Mum (big Elvis fan) hated it. Others kind of expected something a bit odd from me. M-I-L loathes it, but isn't keen on Presley anyway cause she is a girl.
Now I love it. There are 4 Sophies, 2 Emilys, 3 Lucys and 3 Amelias in her class. There are only 15 girls! Presley is the only Presley in her school. She was the only female one in england when she was born.

I've also got an Orson and Chester (last one was DH choice.)

But Elvis?? No dear. Grin

PaigeTurner · 25/10/2010 10:43

I love Elvis - DM said she'd never speak to me again if I used it.

ValiumSkeleton · 25/10/2010 09:49

Oh that's embarrassing!

Pootletrinket · 25/10/2010 06:37

No to Presley as well - Travis, I'd prefer, but he wouldn't.

And, Liononthefloor- elf-wise friend would only encourage him - he did suggest an acceptable (to him) variation would be Elvin - only one step away from Lord of the Rings stuff as far as I'm concerned!!!

There's a theory the Jesus and Joshua are pretty much the same name.

How about Presley?

freerangeeggs · 24/10/2010 23:32

I think Elvis is fantastic but there's no way I'd have the nads to use it myself!!

CarGirl · 24/10/2010 23:14

MIL has had many cats, after Elvis died she named one Levis........

sandyballs · 24/10/2010 22:37

I just laughed at this thread and told dh. His reply was "what's wrong with calling him elvis" Hmm. thank god we had girls !

RustyBear · 24/10/2010 22:33

Lollipopshoes- if your DH actually said he wanted to name your son Horatio because he would be born 200 years after the battle of Waterloo he is either (a) an amazing prophet (b) very bad at history or (c) both, because the battle of Waterloo was fought in June 1815 and Horatio Nelson had nothing to do with it, partly because he was a naval officer but mostly because he had been dead for nearly 10 years, having died at the battle of Trafalgar.

If you do in fact have a DS in June 1815 you would have to call him Arthur, after the Duke of Wellington...

maktaitai · 24/10/2010 22:22

Urgh! Travis? Elvis infinitely preferable to that IMO, though I am old so am negatively influenced by Pipe-Smoker of the Year 1987, Dave Lee Travis.

Also from a musical point of view, Elvis preferable to Travis.

I can think of a lot worse.

GiganGORE · 24/10/2010 22:19

Dp would also want to name any child of ours Elvis. thankfully we are in no position for more.

though i do know a little boy named Elvis. he is 7 and gorgeous. his brother Ozzy and sister Summer are also beautifull.

you only go Shock the first time you hear it. after that its just a name

CarGirl · 24/10/2010 22:18

Can I counter suggest Travis - someone I knew that was seriously considering Elvis, settled on Travis in the end Grin, definitely preferable!

icapturethecastle · 24/10/2010 22:16

I have definitely been watching too much fireman sam as that was my first though rather than the king!!! Maybe use as a middle name?

LionOnTheFloorInAPoolOfBlood · 24/10/2010 22:15

If he is dead set how about going back to the origins of the name

Think Baby Names has:
"The boy's name Elvis \e-lvis is pronounced EL-viss. Possibly related to Alvis from Norse mythology. Made famous by the late singer/actor Elvis Presley. Name of a sixth-century Irish saint, who is also known as Elwyn, Elwin, Elian and Allan. World champion skater Elvis Stojko; football player Elvis Grbac.

Elvis has 6 variant forms: Alvis, Alvys, Elvio, Elviss, Elvo and Elvys.

For more information, see also related names Kelvis and Yoelvis.

Baby names that sound like Elvis are Alviss and Alvise. "

Or Babyhold has:
"The name Elvis is a baby boy name. The name Elvis comes from the English origin. In English The meaning of the name Elvis is: Elf-wise friend. Variant of Alvin"

  • Perhaps the elf-wise friend might put him off????
