Opinions please without being too nasty would be appreciated we are really struggling to agree on girls names i love Sienna or Lola-mae however hubby not liking either of those and suggested Princess.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
arfasleep · 21/10/2010 21:21

Yes, Princess def not unusual for black girls name, as is Prince for man but otherwise would def say no, no, sorry v tacky. Would be better as middle name if you want to use it at all. Names meaning Princess prob a good idea

Blu · 21/10/2010 21:20

Imagine Kate Middleton's Dad had fancied calling her Princess. Her fairytale dream would have fallen at the first hurdle as Royal Advisors sniggered while advising Wills that 'Princess Princess and Prince W' was just silly.

Do not curtail your children's chances in life with an ill-thought out name!

greenlotus · 21/10/2010 21:16

In some cultures this would be a usual name (I knew an adult "Princess" in London and she was every bit as lovely as her name) but you probably wouldn't be agonising if that was the case for you.

facebook · 21/10/2010 21:13

Oh NOOO please don't do it. Fine for a poncy dog, not for a child. Sienna is not too bad though still not to my taste but certainly a far better choice than Princess. Think about the poor girl growing up to be a 30 year old writing a CV with her name on. Would u employ a Princess??? (without laughing at her unfortunite name??)

Horton · 21/10/2010 21:09

Oh dear, Princess is a really awful name. It really is. I don't honestly like Lola that much either but at least it's not actively silly.

I think Princess would be bearable as a middle name but honestly truly I wouldn't give it to anyone as a real name. It's cruel.

Agree with dropping the hyphenated Mae. I actually think Mae or May would be fine as a name on its own or a middle name but not double-barrelled.

How about

Summer
Tallulah
Amber
Alexa
Scarlett
Mia
Sadie
Vivienne
Leonie
Melissa

?

They're not names I'd choose but they are pretty girly names which aren't completely ridiculous.

IggitheImpaler · 21/10/2010 20:13

"If you like it that's all that matters" - yep, so long as you don't give a fig for how it affects the dd, then nothing else matters. Hmm

ilovesprouts · 21/10/2010 19:35

no one likes my son/grandsons name but i dont care !!!if you like it thats all that matters

SecretNutellaFix · 21/10/2010 19:16

you also mentioned you quite like Mae. What about Maya?

Princess is certainly a name I would snigger at. I am being honest, and people can flame me, but I would snigger in private even if I said, "Erm, THat's an interesting choice. Any middle names to go with it?"

It's not really a name that can be shortened either.

ColdComfortFarm · 21/10/2010 19:09

Amira is fine.

SmellsLikeTeenSweat · 21/10/2010 19:05

The trouble with Amiras is that it sounds as if it's backwards...

How about Sarima? Smile

Original and not offensive Hmm

zozzle · 21/10/2010 18:58

Tacky and silly don't do it.

MaudOHara · 21/10/2010 18:50

Agree with everyone else - Princess is a total no-no and if DH landed our DC with an inappropriate name to "prove a point" I would be very pissed off

JamaicaGeisha · 21/10/2010 18:40

There are lots and lots of black children called Princess. (although it was somewhat more common a few years ago, you're more likely to meet a grandma called it)

If you're black in black community, go for it. If not, I wouldn't.

Another suggestion for full name for Lola, which is a bit more girly... how about Laurelle?

Silkstalkings · 21/10/2010 17:55

Princess isn't hideous, it's a pretty enough sound, it's just silly. And people would assume you are fans of Jordan which also makes you look dumb given she appears to be a greedy, manipulative monster who shamelessly exploits her children.

Minione · 21/10/2010 17:45

I can't believe that anybody would actually call their child Princess but according to the Gov's stats there are quite a few who do! Its hideous, there are so many lovely, pretty, feminine names out ther - why on earth would anybody go for that?

Lola and Sienna are fine, not names I would choose but perfectly nice names. My DH has some funny ideas but if he suggested Princess I would assume it was a joke.

Expecting06112010 · 21/10/2010 17:38

well i thought that perhaps if you find a name that means princess its meeting in the middle with your hubby, and Amiras very pretty i think!

Bunbaker · 21/10/2010 17:29

I haven't read all the posts, but it looks like the general consensus is that Princess is pretty tacky. And, I'm sorry, but I agree.

It's fine as a nickname, but as a christian name not great. I'm not keen on hyphenated names either. Where I live they aren't exactly classy.

Of the three I like Sienna the best. Lola is OK, but DD has a friend with a dog called Lola and I can't see it as a girl's name without thinking of the dog. But that is just me so ignore that last comment.

Silkstalkings · 21/10/2010 17:29

Not every employer has had diversity and equality training. Many, many employers (without a trained-up HR dept to do it for them) would see Princess on a CV and assume her parents were thick so with such an unfortunate genepool they would fling her cv aside without reading about her 1st class degree. It's not fair but it is true, they are just human.

SmellsLikeTeenSweat · 21/10/2010 17:17

Sarah means princess too Grin

yummymummie1 · 21/10/2010 17:16

I quite like Amira and it goes with our surname! Thanks

SmellsLikeTeenSweat · 21/10/2010 17:16

Not Princess, and not Lola-Mae. Sorry, but they are both chavlicious.

Lola is classy, on its own (am too old to be reminded of Charlie & Lola - read it further up the thread.)

Expecting06112010 · 21/10/2010 17:15

how about Amira? i think thats pretty! and means princess!

5DollarShake · 21/10/2010 17:11

Colditz does indeed speak the truth, harsh as it may be to hear.

plonker · 21/10/2010 17:09

I like emptyshell's suggestion - if your dh is so set on Princess, why not use it as a middle name? Best of both worlds Smile

Sienna Princess ...
Lola Princess ...

or how about

Sadie Princess ...
Jasmine Princess ...
Heidi Princess ...
