Kwini - we're in the West Country and I know 5 boys called Laurie including my own DS.

Laurie Lee is a local hero so is definitely not a weird or female name here!

I must admit that some people are looking around for a large articulated truck when I shout his name in the park!!

IntheFrightGarden · 17/10/2010 22:20

but i love Silas- hero of brilliant 80s TV kids show.

IntheFrightGarden · 17/10/2010 22:19

DH just said 'Laurie' sounds like 'lorry' and Silas reminds him of something to do with farming, he's thinking silage Hmm

sorry.

poppydaisy · 17/10/2010 11:02

I really like Silas. Laurie is too feminine imo, as is Laurence.

WowOoo · 17/10/2010 10:57

Silas for me. But, perhaps because I know one and he is a beautiful, clever and very funny man.

Kwini · 17/10/2010 10:55

Those of you who know Lauries - may I ask whereabouts (generally) you live? Is it a Scottish thing?

Love Laurie - dd1 would have been it.

I'm sorry but I really, really hate Silas. It is like Seth - I imagine a horrible old man chewing straw.

AmelieMay · 16/10/2010 23:44

Louie is fab too

Rhubarbgarden · 16/10/2010 07:43

Love Laurie, hate Silas.

mintyfresh · 15/10/2010 21:00

DS is Laurie as nn - have never had any comments about it being girly Confused. I think it is only a problem in America (def a girls name there!)as there are lots of boys I know called Laurie now.

I also like Silas a lot...

katiepotatie · 15/10/2010 16:36

I love Laurie for a boy, quite common in Scotland. Smile Silas is not my cup of tea, i'm afraid

Kwini · 15/10/2010 16:29

Lol, bundlebelly - no, we're just being super keen (read: sad). Started trying last month..!

I have a girl Laurie and she would've been Laurence...still Laurie effectively! Bloody wonderful name.

bundlebelly · 15/10/2010 09:37

OOH Kwini recognise you now from previous thread. Does that mean you have some good news??? Or are you just very very organised!

bundlebelly · 15/10/2010 09:35

I vote for Laurie.
Although it does sound like Lorry.
But gorgeous for a little boy. Not sure about a big hunky manly man though.

Agree with previous posters about Silas being a bit old agricultural and sullen.
But if you love a name, you go for it. Don't listen to us!

rachel234 · 15/10/2010 09:32

Silas is a great name.

Laurie sounds feminine - too close to Laura/Lorelei etc. I also have a French friend called Laurence in her 30s.

diddl · 15/10/2010 08:59

Silas is a lovely name.

A version of Saul?

Isn´t there a St Silas?

And what´s wrong with Silas Marner?

mathanxiety · 14/10/2010 19:29

Silas. I think Laurie sounds more girly, and also it's more of a nn for Laurence (which I prefer as a French girl's name. Lowry as in the painter might be nicer for a boy?

But Silas is a good, solid, old name.

Kwini · 14/10/2010 18:43

That's interesting, Cuppa - so, a bit like 'lourie' (as in the bird)?..

One of my first crushes was on that Silas in the 80s programme! Blush

It seemed such an exciting storyline at the time. He found out he'd been stolen by travellers as a baby, and tried to trace his birth mother. I've always loved the name Silas because of him, but I wouldn't use it for a child.

Have you thought about the Finnish name Lauri, pr Lau-ree, rhyming Lau with cow if that makes sense?

chickentwizzler · 13/10/2010 17:27

Love Laurence shortened to Laurie

meadowlarks · 13/10/2010 17:05

I know a male Laurie and I think it's nice. Silas just seems uber American dust-bowl Grapes of Wrath to me. It's not a bad name in itself, but I think it's not going to suit everyone.

joydivisionovengloves · 13/10/2010 16:36

I'm with Pooka. Silas reminds me of that badly dubbed 80's kid's TV show and yes it did involve a windmill!

Sunlightdances · 13/10/2010 15:16

I know a male and a female Laurie (full names for both of them) and it suits them both.
