DH LOVES this name, and it goes with our surname (begins with Gr), I think I like it, as long as its not shortened to Steve.

We do seem to like names ending in en.

What do you all think?

Patrick - dont like it when shortened to Pat, and the name is too Irish
Thomas - good friends have used this name, still slightly tempted as like the name Tom, but doesnt go as well as Stephen with our surname
Simon - both DH and I have cousins with this name
Samuel - I like the name Samuel but not Sam
David (or Davy) - Dad and ex boyfriend names are David
Matthew - like this name. DH has a good friend called Matt, which is putting him off. I also have an ex-boyfriend called Matt.
Jonathan - dont like this name(unexplainable)

I only have three ex-boyfriends, but I was with all three for over a year, and they have stopped me from using three good solid names - Daniel, Matthew and David (wouldnt have used anyway due to dads name).

Hubbies names Ian and his brothers Andrew, which rules these names out. My brothers are Gareth and Charles/Charlie.

Not easy using traditional names, when hubbie doesnt want names that friends family have already taken!!

I know a Matthew who is "Thew" - bet his parents didn't see that one coming

your son may hate Stephen so might decide to call himself Steve, or even worse Ste!!!

I do know one Stephen who is not Steve but it is unusual for it not to get shortened?

I think if you don't like the short version then don't choose the name? (dh is david - everyone calls him Dave except his parents who hate it...)

ds is Matthew - if he chooses to be Matt when he is older then that is fine by me.

I love it. My brother's name. Has always been 'Steven' until now (mid 30's) as someone else at work is Steven so he's 'Steve' there apparently.

Really, OP, I don't think spelling it with a ph, and calling him the full name all the time, and going "la la not listening" when other people shorten it, will ever really protect you from the fact that your son will be called Steeeeeve.

Sorry.

I bet there are traditional names that haven't been used.

I like Stefan, but consider it the German name for Stephen (I went to school with a German boy called Stefan, and he was very unattractive - which sticks in my mind).

Steffan (welsh name for Stephen) has already been used in our family.

I wonder if I call him Stephen all his life, and not Steve, it'll be okay.

I dont like the spelling Steven.

Other names I like are quite traditional - Mark, Richard, William, Edward etc. These have all been used in our family, and we have a rule not to use family or close friends names.

love it - because it is my lovely brother's name. He gets called ste by the family and steve by his mates and when his wife is in a good mood its stevie.

Yes how about Stefan? It's a lovely name.

I don't know any Stephen/Stevens in this country, although one from Italy who uses his full name.

Bloody looooads of Steves though.

If you don't like Steve, I can't see you liking Stephen much either TBH.

I know two Stephen's, both use the full name. One is affectionately known as Stevie from time to time - what do you think of that as a nickname?

My husband is called Stephen, never been shortened, his mum never shortened it and none of our friends do.

Hmm, good point Bunty Penfold.

The issue is I used to have an Uncle Steve (now divorced and dont see him, after he cheated on my lovely aunt - mums sister), and I associate it with him.

I would say do not choose a name if you dislike the obvious shortening.
