Hi,

Although I am English, we don't live in the UK, so have no idea what names are popular right now. I have come up with a list and would really appreciate your thoughts.

Please feel free to be honest - I can take it!

Thanks,

Fulla x

Betty
Dakota
Dolly
Dulcie
Idalia
Isolde
Eden
Ella
Layla
Lola
Marnie
Poppy
Rosa
Valentina
Verity

I mean that SOBS hasn't tried very hard with her input.

FullaDoll · 12/10/2010 12:24

Sorry Hullygully, what do you mean?

Please put more thought into it, SOBS

Do consider where you live as well for pronouncability/fashion.

I love Verity and Isolde from your list.

Dulcie I have unfortunate associations that go with the name, as nice as it is.

Sone of them are overused IMO (Ella, Layla, Lola, Poppy) or have socio-economic markers (Dakota, Eden) or are just old fashioned (Betty, Dolly).

FullaDoll · 12/10/2010 12:02

Wow! Thanks so much for your feedback, all very interesting. I am so sad to hear how common Eden is, I absolutely love it as a name. I think we'll scrub Ella as well!

Thanks again Smile

Betty - not keen, think old ladies, Betsy is better

Dakota - isn't that one of the states, would be like calling your child Northampton

Dolly - cute as a nickname, but Dorothy(and it's derivatives areawaful - think old ladies)

Dulcie - lovely, claissic and elegant

Idalia - is lovely, but people will mispronounce the Id as rather than Eye - have you thought about Ianthe or Iolanthe

Isolde - Fab, like it spelt Yseult - again prone to mispronunciation

Eden - a naff perfume from the 80's or tourist attraction

Ella - Ok, bit bland

Layla - Ok, but bland

Lola - Charlie's little sister! Like it, but many won't because of the "Showgirl" connatation. Lola could be a nn for Iolanthe

Marnie - fab name, unusual without being off the wall.

Poppy - Ok, bit bland

Rosa - Ok, bit bland

Valentina - am undecided about this name. Always have been, don't like the potential shortenings of Val or Tina

Verity - Marvellous, but I like "Puritan" names, Patience, Constance, Grace

AngryPixie · 12/10/2010 11:50

How about Arden, my dd, means passionate.

Rockbird · 12/10/2010 11:48

Isolde
Layla
Valentina
Verity

are all lovely. The others don't do it for me.

mazzystartled · 12/10/2010 11:40

Love
Betty (but please name her Elizabeth)
Isolde (but very sad story)
and Rosa (wonderful)

Eden is pretty but I think you need a bit of a hippy ben tot get away with it

Lola and Ella are nice but mega popular (round here), lots of Poppies also

not loving the rest

Betty- is an old lady name, usually short for Elizabeth. Elizabeth has more options too
Dakota- v American, not great
Dolly- again, old lady name and achingly twee
Dulcie- sweet but having quite a surge or popularity with the middle classes atm
Idalia- have never heard this before. It's pretty
Isolde- beautiful, beautiful name
Eden- to put it politely, round these here parts it would be associated with children from a certain socio-economic background. Think tracksuits. Never spoken, usually shrieked
Ella- this name is so popular that it has ceased to be a name. It's a noise people make when talking about little girls
Layla- meh. Alright but falls into the layla/ella/ellie/lola/girly category that's obligatory atm
Lola- see above
Marnie- really sweet
Poppy- no. Stupidly popular about 5 years ago, always has a sister called Holly and sometimes one called Lily too
Rosa- sweet
Valentina- I like this a lot
Verity- nope.

LynetteScavo · 12/10/2010 11:33

Betty - OK if shortened from Elizabeth.
Dakota - no
Dolly - cute
Dulcie - lovely
Idalia - lovely
Isolde - I bit GErman (Which is fine if you live in Germany)
Eden - a bit ahem, commen, IMO.
Ella - Every other little girl around here is called Ella.
Layla - I love it, but it makes DH burst out singing Eric Clapton.
Lola - lovely, populare, but lovely.
Marnie - i'm not sure, it's growing on me.
Poppy - For some reason I've never really liked it.
Rosa - perfect. Smile
Valentina - a bit frilly.
Verity - Excellent.

tummytickler · 12/10/2010 11:29

I like Rosa and Marnie.
I love Dolly and Betty, but would use Dorothy and Elizabeth.

Really dislike Dakota, Eden, Ella, Lola and Verity.

shootfromthehip · 12/10/2010 11:29

Erm, notmany of them float my boat tbh. I do like Marnie and Verity.

QuoththeRaven · 12/10/2010 11:27
