Would you change this name

My 4 week old ds is called Noah now I love the name but am hearing it everywhere since choosing it . I have just found out that there are going to be 3 in his year at school already!! All my other children are the only ones in their year but do not have particularly unusual names

Now names can be changed would you do this or leave it as is. What would you change it to as we were very short on boys names.

Noah is a lovely name, but there are a lot of them around. How much does it bother you?

Did you have any other names that you were seriously considering?

Haliborange · 04/10/2010 17:13

Unless there is something else that you love, keep it as Noah. There are a lot of them about but that's because it is a nice name.

kiwidreamer · 04/10/2010 17:14

I just dont understand this massive preoccupation with having a unique name, there are not enough names for every child ever born to have a unique name (well there could be I guess if you were going to get really unique).

If its a name you really like and no close friends / family have already used the name (nothing you can do for children born after yours) then I honestly dont think its an issue that there will be other kids in his year at school with that name.

As far as I know in our area, I might have heard it a couple of times over the past few years but not on a weekly basis.

Noah is a lovely name. Names are popular for a reason. If you like it stick with it don't change it to something you don't like as much just because a few other kids have the same name. I haven't heard of any where I live so it can't be that popular.

tooloudhere · 04/10/2010 17:31

I am not overly fussed about it being a unique name, I am not sure the name is right and this is just one of the reasons.

Not sure I can really explain why as I loved the name till we said we were going to call him it. However it just isn't sitting quite right when I call him Noah it doesn't seem like it should be his name and it can not be shortened or have a nickname etc.
There isn't anything else we really liked/ agreed on but that is not a reason not to try and think of something else.

Won't it confuse your other children if their baby brother suddenly has a new name? I couldn't call a baby something for 4 weeks then change it, the new name would never seem to be his real name.

Tippychoocks · 04/10/2010 17:45

Change it if you don't like it. The others will get over it - people will not be talking about it in ten years! But unless you're sure on an alternative then I wouldn't, names can often not sit right on new babies and he may grow into it.
Does he have a middle name you can use instead?

mathanxiety · 04/10/2010 18:35

I would change it. There are a lot of them, and I personally think it's a bit 'wet'.

mopsyflopsy · 04/10/2010 20:47

I agree - change it if it really bothers you. The sooner the better, and people will quickly adjust to your ds's new name.

QuantaCosta · 04/10/2010 21:36

???He's 4 weeks old and there already 3 in his year at school already!!! talk about wishing his life away ShockA lot can happen in four years.

I think it's a lovely name. Why change it?? he will be unique because he is him and not because he's got a 'yuuneeque' name!!

BelligerentGhoul · 04/10/2010 21:38

Noah is a nice name. I really don't get this over-obsession on here with names not being 'right' or not suiting the child. He is four weeks old - he will grow into whatever name he is given.

MsHighwater · 04/10/2010 21:47

If you don't change it now, are you going to be back asking the same question when he is a year old, or 18 months or more?

If so, then change it now - perhaps you could keep Noah as an unused first name or as a middle name so that you can change your mind back again later if you decide you should have kept Noah...

tooloudhere · 04/10/2010 22:12

It is playing on my mind at the moment and yes it probably isn't fair to the other children to change their brothers name.
Need to think some more on this one I think, could just be hormones!

I'm having this issue too, too! We have wanted to name our DS Noah since conceiving (now 24 weeks) but decided against it now as it's become too popular, I also have the 'lack of a nickname' vibe.

It's currently number 9 in the US - which is very relevant to our situation as we spend a large chunk of the year there.

Loujalou · 05/10/2010 13:04

My cousin is a Theo and it didn't suit him as a baby but does now he is a teenager.

Used to have a friend called Noah and we called him Nogsy. Suited him. Like the name. Stick to it.
