Boo for a girl?

NickiStan · 03/10/2010 21:08

We have just started thinking about names and I really like Boo for a girl? We have quite a long surname so would like something nice and short. I know it sounds quite cutesy but think the lack of a middle name would help.

Thoughts?

Thanks

my dd is called ruby, she was always on the boob so Boo stuck, it is now Boo Boo from her little sister. Boo is lovely but not a name i dont think

McHobbes · 29/01/2011 22:02

My ex boyf has a daughter called Boo. Everyone slags off the name choice behind their backs.

I think it's ok as a name myself, but the world thinks it's ridiculous.

lagrandissima · 29/01/2011 22:01

Boo Radley anyone?

birthdaychick · 29/01/2011 22:00

Beatrice "Boo Boo" Glass v. Salinger, therefore in my book a brilliant name.

AllieW · 29/01/2011 21:56

Hmm. It's what my friend's sons call their distinguishing mark of gender, shall we say. Not keen.

working9while5 · 24/01/2011 19:41

The Irish for star is "realt" ray - alt, with the diminuitive realtin - ray alt cheen.

Not sure where Boo comes into it!

thefinerthingsinlife · 24/01/2011 17:03

My DD is 4 and her name is Isabel but her nickname and what we call her 90% of the time is boo/boo-bar. Love it as her nickname but never never ever as a first name

Rosa · 24/01/2011 10:28

It was my nn by my dad and stil is. As a proper name sorry I don't like it at all .

Tillyscoutsmum · 24/01/2011 10:19

Cute name but not sure it would work very well as an adult. I know someone who has it as a middle name

PaisleyLeaf · 24/01/2011 10:17

Apparently it's an Irish name, and means 'star'.

(Well I never)

Blatherskite · 24/01/2011 10:14

I do this...imagine your boss at work. Now imagine her name is Boo. Could you take her seriously? No.

Silly name.

In fact, it's not even a name, it's a sound.

Oh the playground torment. All those pre-pubescent boys yelling "Peeka..." every time she rounds the corner

TennisFan · 24/01/2011 10:14

One of my DD's middle names is Boo. Most people know about it - althogh it is not the name she uses at school or doctors etc.
She is 7 and has no problem with it, and no-one creeps around shouting "boo" at her either.

It totally suits her - and she can use it for as long as she likes, or not when she is older. I am guessing she will love it when she is older - there are quite enough Rebekahs, Olivias, Ellas, Eves etc round here - she will be glad of something a bit different by the time she gets to Uni!

If she doesnt like it then, she doesn't have to tell everyone.

OgreTripletsAreSoCute · 24/01/2011 10:01

Not unless you want her to go through life being asked what her real name is.

blowninonabreeze · 24/01/2011 09:54

My dd2 is called boo by her family and quite a few friends. However it isn't her real name, and she's only 2!! I love it, but I wouldn't have registered her as it.

If you're looking for an unusual name, I think you'd be disapointed, as since I had dd, I've met 4 or 5 people who call their daughters boo ( although never as their actual name)

Hedwig3 · 24/01/2011 09:45

How about Bo (like Bo Derek)?

Short name box ticked and nickname could still be Boo Smile

freerangeeggs · 23/01/2011 21:12

It sounds like Poo

Mittler · 23/01/2011 20:15

Boo was on my list of possibilities for DD, but DH said no. In retrospect, he was probably right (though I do still like it). There was a Boo at my school, who was lovely. As others have said, it's probably better as a nickname.

Duhart · 23/01/2011 20:13

Er, its

Duhart · 23/01/2011 20:12

I do know an Isabel nn Isaboo but Boo on it's own... oh dear no. Just no. It isn't fair to your DD to saddle her with such a cutesy nickname of a name, especially without a middle name.

MarioandLuigi · 23/01/2011 19:50

She will constantly get people shouting Boo! at her, and they will think its hilarious.

My DN is called Bethany and everyone calls her Betty Boo, so it works as nn.

kayah · 23/01/2011 19:49

my 11 ds says she would be laughet at in primary school, but ok for later :)

CockneySparra · 23/01/2011 19:47

Cute nickname, completely bonkers as an actual name.

Emjxxx · 23/01/2011 19:46

My DD is 13 and we call her Boo, its not her real name, but she's been Boo since she was born, even her mates call her Boo and some of her teachers. She was Boo, before Monsters Inc came out, she looked like Boo from Monsters inc though!

treedelivery · 23/01/2011 19:45

I think with these things the thing to do is imagine it is you. Would you want to be called Boo, and introduce yourself as such at work, interviews, parties etc.

Now I actually wouldn't be too bothered, but I'm not sure how others might feel.

RetroMum1 · 23/01/2011 19:24

There is one of these around here (I'm serious) and she came to a baby group with the mother 3 years ago and hasn't been seen since. She didn't get the warmest of welcomes after revealing the child's name so for you sake as much of the child's don't do it as it seems to warrant making you a social outcast around here!
