Does no-one out there like Beauden or Arizona?

Hi there,

Well, our little one is due anytime now and we have got nowhere with sorting out names yet, despite everyone on mumsnet being great.

We have decided to probably stick with Beauden, which everyone slated us for before. I know about the Boden association but there are other baby threads which really like the name. Does anyone like Beauden or am I completely mad?

The other names we have talked about are:

Arizona
Sterling
Ronan
Winter (couldn't have this for a first name).

Really like Arizona as it is a special place to us (we live in UK).

Just needing some help - I did listen to everyone and told myself we couldn't use the name Beauden but me and dh still keep coming back to it. Please help...

RE: Cypress, again I see 'ess' as a feminine ending. "Jess", "Princess", "Lioness" etc.

Maybe I'm a lot more old-fashioned than I thought! And I'm 22. Am I not supposed to be uber-cool and 'out there' right now? :(

sweet post, babylann - thank you. Unfortunately, I will also now have Jeremy Kyle and Tarzan in my mind (not a good image). Think I see where you are coming from. On the other thread people thought Beauden conjured up a good-looking guy - oh well.

Skyrg, it doesn't have to be that unusual - just conjuring up a nice image - preferably to do with nature. Acually, you mention Cyrus. Don't like that very much but I did like Cypress (but know that won't work as it sounds too much like Cyprus).

I don't like Arizona or Beauden. I think Beauden looks a bit pretentious, like "pick a French word and then stick 'den' on the end." I think names ending with 'den' often sound too American. E.g. Jayden, Kayden, etc.

And Arizona doesn't seem like a good boy's name. Boy's names shouldn't end with an 'a', imo. As much as I'd like to preach feminist and all that, I don't want my DCs to suffer bullying because of my beliefs, so personally I would always stick to female or male names.

When I think Beauden, I think of a three-year-old boy with his ears pierced and teenage parents. Jeremy Kyle fodder. When I think of Arizona, I think of a Pocahontas-y tribe boy dressed a bit like Tarzan.

Not meaning to sound overly blunt. But you seem to take criticism well, and these are only opinions. And my DD hasn't got the most traditional name either, and there have been one or two raised eyebrows from the old women on the bus who ask what she's called. So I do think names are a personal thing. Personally, I would pick the name you say out loud and like the most, and sod what anyone else says.

Skyrg, looove River (but not a goer). Love Phoenix but our surname starts with an 'F' - sounds a real mouthful. Asher - ok. Thanks for the suggestions. Really annoying - have always loved River but we have an Ocean already. And no, not kidding - I love her name!!!

Not Boden - melikalikimaka (wow, don't think that name is going to win me over) . It would be spelt Beauden - totally different, you see. Still like Arizona but as someone said earlier - it is a girl's name. Just googled it again - thanks for pointing that out.

There are plenty of 'unusual' naturey names that are a bit more common.
River, for example.
Or:
Bracken
Phoenix
Briar
Asher
Jasper
Leon

Quattrocento, you must be living in America - too sharp for this time of night. Actually, we did briefly discuss Monsoon but only very quickly. Now that shop I do know.

Skyrg, we are looking for a soft sounding nature name - two syllables. Can't start with 'f' or we would have liked Forest.

And Paisleyleaf - that's why I prefer unusual names to the usual, boring old names out there. People remember you - although I agree totally that you don't want to be remembered for being too ridiculous. Although I don't think our names are ridiculous - I love the ones we have chosen to date.

Thanks for your help everyone. Off to bed. Will mull over your suggestions - probably come back to Arizona or Beauden mind

Actually I love the absurd babyname threads. My personal favourite was Cloud, although Bear ran it a close second.

I did suggest Shit-in-the-woods as a middle name following Bear but the OP didn't seem particularly keen

I LOVE Arizona, but for a girl. I think it might be because of a TV programme though (Grey's Anatomy).

If I was American I would definitely consider it for my future DD's (sighs).

Ok, if you have an Autumn you cannot call the next one Winter. What kind of name are you looking for, perhaps we can suggest others? Hippyish, nouns, places... currency?

Great memory paisleyleaf - we do indeed have an Autumn and I absolutely LOVE her name and she gets so many compliments. So if everyone hates the name Autumn on here, then perhaps Beauden is a winner after all.

Quattrocento - thank you for making me laugh out loud. But come on, what is so wrong with Summer. Shame about your post - I was thinking pound was quite nice. Or there again you suggested tsunami - hmmm, quite like that.

OP, they are taking the piss (Seeker, I have my eye on you). Here are some guidelines

Avoid calling your child after a US State. Especially New Jersey or New Hampshire. Really do avoid North Carolina as well

Please avoid calling your child after currency. Sterling is not good. Euros is not good. Dollars is not good. Roubles is not good. In fact all currency names should be avoided

Please avoid calling your child after seasons or weather related names. Please avoid Spring, Summer Autumn or Winter. Also avoid Wind, Typhoon or Tsunami, no matter how apposite those names might be.

In fact, a good rule for you would be to stick to Kings or Queens of England. But before you fall in love with Ethelred, the rule is that they have to have reigned after 1500.

Oh well, paisleyleaf - you are right, here I go again for another ear bashing. Guess I was a bit naive thinking there might be some new mums on here who actually like Beauden.

And I am sad to say I don't think I am mentally challenged (actually, that's quite funny as I submitted my Masters dissertation today - hence, some surfing on the net). But I take your point and let's face it, I have asked for your opinions.

Thanks for pointing out about the Arizona clothing label - guess it wouldn't be a good idea just in case ds decides to go to the States one day.

Starting to like Sterling again... and perhaps Ronan.

Keep going girls, you might succeed in putting me off at last. Or there again...
