I will be using it anyway, just trying to gauge opinion, as many mums now, or women younger than me pull their faces as if it were the most horrific name on earth.

Yet all the older people I tell seem to love it, am I giving her a name which will result in funny faces from her peers?

I'm also Lizzie to a handful of male friends.(well, 2 in fact) It has a touch of paternalism about it but it also comes with a great dollop of affection, and as the people in question are lovely life-long friends I forgive them. and actually rather like it.

hatwoman · 04/10/2010 15:16

Heifer - I too announced as a teen that I was to be Liz...but in later life have reclaimed Elizabeth a bit - I use it formally for work (ie in anything written, my email address) but soon become Liz to colleagues. People can be a bit dense though - I can remember at work a number of times people insisting I wasn't on the phone list (organised by first-names). They were looking under L and it hadn;t occured to them to look under E. derr.

Heifer · 03/10/2010 22:52

Hatwoman, I just knew you would have such a great name Grin

I too am an Elizabeth, and whilst I used to hate it as a teenager and insist friends called me Liz, I now like it.

I abbrev to Eliz (silent E when pronouced) as I hate it being written down as L.Surname..

These day, as my parents no longer around, no-one calls me Elizabeth and I've just realised I miss it Sad

Sassybeast · 03/10/2010 21:55

Beautiful name Smile

auburnlizzy78 · 03/10/2010 21:25

I'm Liz to my mates, Lizzy to Mumsnetters, and Elizabeth in business and when I am in trouble with my mum. (I am 31 Grin)

Very versatile name with a range of nicknames which can be deployed depending on the situation. An excellent choice!

maxpower · 03/10/2010 20:36

love it - its our 'girls' name this time round

flopsy1974 · 03/10/2010 20:35

A true classic. Gorgeous name.

KittyFoyle · 03/10/2010 17:16

We have a two year old Elizabeth mostly known as Libby or Little Betty by one friend. She can be all sorts of things when she gets older - whatever she likes. She was named after my lovely nan who died when I was 6 in a tribute to Dad's side of the family. But like it very much anyway. Vey many cool and strong female role models with same name.

DancingThroughLife · 03/10/2010 00:34

I heart Elizabeth. Tis DD's middle name, but I sometimes wish we had saved it in case we have another girl in the future.

Great nn potential. My fave is Betsy, but I like all of them really. And I know a 6mo Betty and a 2yo Eliza. And countless Liz/Lizzies in their 20s and 30s.

A1980 · 03/10/2010 00:24

I love it. It's a very regal, classic name.

LetThereBeRock · 02/10/2010 23:39

And Beth is a much nicer nickname than Betty.

LetThereBeRock · 02/10/2010 23:39

It's lovely.

LiquoriceLila · 02/10/2010 21:58

I hate it, its one girls name that I just cant stand. Irrational but there you go.

BrokenRing · 02/10/2010 10:13

We have an Elisabeth. She is delighted we chose the "s" version for her name, and although she has to say "Elisabeth with an S" for form-filling, everyone always says what a beautiful name it is.

It has been shortened to Lizzie (thinking of Pride & Prejudice),and Liz, but now is almost always Libby or the full name. We know other Elizabeths who are shortened to Beth and also Buffy.

plonker · 02/10/2010 00:32

My favourite ever girls name! Beautiful Smile

AmandaCooper · 02/10/2010 00:26

Love it. Good choice!

ifancyashandy · 01/10/2010 23:52

I know an Elizabeth well Grin Wink

Tis a beautiful name indeed!

And YY to Eliabeths being 'most sucessful'!

Never been too keen on Betty though! But always liked Liz, Liza and Elsbeth.

Lizzie will get your head bitten off never been a favourite.

lola0109 · 01/10/2010 22:51

I love it but it is my 6mo DD2's name (Elizabeth Ellen after her great grannies). DD1 and I call her Lizzie, DP sticks with Elizabeth.

I did have a moment one day when I wanted to punch an old lady. She was smiling away at DD2 and asked her name, I said Elizabeth and she said "oh you don't hear that now". Then asked DD1's name, she replied Ainslie, and old lady said "oh how come you got the special name" WHAT???? Silly woman!

But I love it and love Lizzie, which people also screw faces up at.

AND Elizabeth is apparently the "most successful" girls name. :)

Hermya321 · 01/10/2010 22:31

Love love love it!!

It's the name of my future daughter, it's a lovely name that will stand the test of time.

insertexpletive · 01/10/2010 18:12

Really like it - never a good idea to tell people before the birth though (not that there should be any dissent with a lovely name like Elizabeth.
Smile

redrobin · 01/10/2010 18:11

so refreshing to have a beautiful name, rather than crimson moon or summat, and love Betty as a nn.

(am sure someone will come and suggest you spell it eleezab'th to make it more modern)

FellatioNelson · 01/10/2010 18:08

I think it's lovely - a very good classic choice but not boring or over-used.

SacharissaCripslock · 01/10/2010 18:07

I love it.
Has been on my girls name list three times but I had all boys. Grin

catinthehat2 · 01/10/2010 18:05

"DilysPrice Fri 01-Oct-10 17:52:25
Great, and gives you endless choices to shorten it, whilst still leaving DD free to use the full thing when she's Her Majesty's Ambassador to Khazakstan."

YES, my thoughts as well, but for when she's running a libel court!

catinthehat2 · 01/10/2010 18:03

Never met an Eliz. I didn't like.

Great name!

I know 2 under 12s now with the name, both very distinctive characters.

I like Z and S version and would have have to toss a coin.
