What is / could this nn be short for?

Does anyone have any ideas what Coco is or could be short for? I really like this as a name but would want to put a more formal name on the birth certificate. I have heard someone mention Cordelia before which is lovely but was wondering if there were any other possibilities.

Thanks

"Coco apparently is short for Sirocco."

No it isn't.

TessOfTheBurbs · 16/09/2010 16:56

"According to www.babynamespedia.com/meaning/Coco "Coco is of Old Greek origin, and it is used mainly in the Dutch, French, and Spanish languages.

Coco is a variant form of the English and French Colette."

I think babynamespedia is a bit dodgy on research. They're getting the "Old Greek" bit from Coco - Colette - Nicolette - Nicholas - Nikolaos. A bit tenuous. Coco's origin as a given name is, as people have said, from Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel.

this is a more reliable site.

Coco Chanel said it was a shortened version of 'cocotte', French for a kept woman.

Another origin - Courteney Cox's nickname is Coco and that's what she named her daughter.

Janoschi · 16/09/2010 16:49

Coco apparently is short for Sirocco. I love the name but DH doesn't... why are the men always so unimaginative? Mine only considers names he's heard of before, and sadly it's a short, German-flavoured list at that.

LittleMissWorryHead · 16/09/2010 09:13

My daughter is a Chloe (age 11) and two of her friends also called Chloe (! EVERY girl aged 11 is called Chloe...) are called Coco as a nickname.....

LaTristesse · 16/09/2010 08:48

Laugh totoros... Grin

I think Jo Whiley has a Coco too...

violethill · 16/09/2010 07:13

Good point seeker!
Coco would sound pretty silly in a formal situation. I have always assumed it's just a nn which doesn't bear any direct relationship to the given name. Coco the clown was called nicolai I believe. Sting has daughters who are known as coco and Micky but they aren't their real names, just nn

Coco always makes me think of a bedtime hot drink for the elderly!

"Sorry why would you give a child a name and then call it something totally unlike it's name - Coco sounds nothing like bloody Cora or Collette."

Because it's better than naming an adult woman Coco!

weepootle · 15/09/2010 21:28

It's used as a shortening for Nicole.

MadameCastafiore · 15/09/2010 21:22

Sorry why would you give a child a name and then call it something totally unlike it's name - Coco sounds nothing like bloody Cora or Collette.

And please do not call your child Cody - sounds like a blood STD!

facebook · 15/09/2010 21:20

I like Connie, Coral, Coralanne, Cordelia, Clara-Olivia (or maybe something similar).

Panzee · 15/09/2010 21:19

Ooh you should pick Colette as suggested earlier. That's a beautiful name too. :)

heathcliffthe2nd · 15/09/2010 21:17

I know a Coco whose full name is Coralie (she is half French)

MrsSchadenfreude · 15/09/2010 20:12

Kasia is short for Katarzyna, which is Catherine, so would be Cath/y, rather than the more exotic Cassia/Kezia.

WilliamItWasReallyNothing · 15/09/2010 20:02

maryz I love your suggestion - I have names beginning C & O on my list:)

lowrib I'm going to check out the babynamespedia link now - maybe we could go for Coco on its own even if it is trying to hardWink

The only people I've heard of called Coco have a totally different first name, and Coco is just a nn rather than an abbreviation. I can't think of any name which abbreviates to it.

MummyLovesSadie · 15/09/2010 18:11

Jo Wiley has a daughter called Coco Lux... cough (trying to hard) cough.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 15/09/2010 17:17

lowrib - that'll be spelled Kasia - English version Cassia and from Kezia - meaning cinnamon bark (can you tell it was on my list once?)

Coco could be short for lots of things, I suppose. What about Corisann(e) not sure of spelling of that, though...

lowrib · 15/09/2010 17:11

I know a polish girl called Coco. I don't know how you spell her name but it's said Casha.

Greensleeves · 15/09/2010 17:01

Coralie
Cody (can be a girls' name)
Condoleeeezzzzzzza (joke)

lowrib · 15/09/2010 16:59

.. but I think anything starting Co works well. How about Corinna? I know an adult Corinna and I think it's a beautiful name.

I like Maryz suggestion too.

smother · 15/09/2010 16:40

is your surname Pops?

lowrib · 15/09/2010 15:45
