A little help would be appreciated - what do you think of the name Digby for our possible DS1 (4 weeks to go)? Our surname begins with D as well - not sure if DMPD would work as initials.

My preferred alternatives would be Frederick (Freddie) or Benedict (Dickie) which I like because you can shorten them, but no such convenience with Digby - unless it is to 'Dig' which i don't like........

Help!!!

I did! You can probably trace geographical roots using this method :)

LittleSilver · 16/09/2010 22:52

saintly I take it you lived in Exeter then? Immediately leapt to my mind too.

RamblingRosa · 16/09/2010 10:28

I wonder if it was the same one Grin

I knew a Diggory. He was a prick. And he went by the name of Dig."

LOL I knew a Diggory too who was also a prick! Grin

I did like the name though as it's different.

lowrib · 15/09/2010 15:48

Digby is great.

Benedict will probably be Ben.

Freddie's good but getting more popular I think.

Saltire · 15/09/2010 12:47

Digby makes me think of the RAF base with the same name

Digby makes me think of the Jazz trumpeter Digby Fairweather.

I quite like Digby, but don't know any dogs with that name, nor do I know who Digby Jones is Blush.

I don't like Benedict - Ben is too common and Dickie is too close to Dick imo. I think schoolchildren will tease a name like Dickie or Willie imo.

RamblingRosa · 15/09/2010 11:35

I knew a Diggory. He was a prick. And he went by the name of Dig.

I still say Digby just makes me think of Digby Jones which IMO isn't a good connotation.

diddl · 15/09/2010 11:22

Diggory sounds like a surname.

(As in Cedric)

FellatioNelson · 15/09/2010 11:13

No No. Diggory doesn't even sound like a real name. It sounds like a hobby involving spades, or a children's TV character - Diggory Dog.

A1980 · 15/09/2010 11:10

I like it but Diggory is better.

BuntyPenfold · 15/09/2010 10:17

I know a lovely Digby; he must be 70 -something.
Not Dickie, really don't. Even the nicest children will say Dickhead.

diddl · 15/09/2010 09:05

I like Digby.

Then again I do know one who is polite, well spoken & drop dead gorgeous.

Also like Benedict.

But Dickie-no, no, no!!

minxofmancunia · 15/09/2010 08:40

Digby agree re dog name or even a donkey.

benedict ok but shorten to ben NOT "Dickie" sound very try hard....and unfortunate. reminds me of my friend who called her ds "Edward" (nice) and shortened it to "woody", pretentious. What's wrong with Ed, Eddie, Ted??

Frederick good as is Freddie.

saintlydamemrsturnip · 15/09/2010 08:37

Digby was the name of the nearby 'mental hospital' (as we called them) when I grew up. You can imagine what we did with the name as horrible little children. Dickie would be cruel.

ValiumSingleton · 15/09/2010 08:33

I like it on that fictional family mentioned above! Arabella, Hamish, Benedict and Digby, but ......... you'd have to be certain you could pull it off.

SirBoobAlot · 15/09/2010 08:20

Horrible.

Also, deciding that you don't mind if someone else is laughed at (regardless of whether they are you son or not!) because they are called Dickie is a bit cruel, tbh. Because he will be laughed at. Benedict is a reasonably nice name, but he will not thank you when he spends his whole school day being laughed at.

Go with Fredrick.

Astrophe · 15/09/2010 04:06

I know a very sweet 4 year old Digby, who suits it well. He is just a normal looking kid- no long bodenesque hair!

He gets called Digs, Digger and Digby. Digger I especially like.

nooka · 15/09/2010 02:14

I quite like Digby (and Digory too) and think in a Boden type world it wouldn't be difficult to live with. Benedict is lovely, but I'm afraid Dickie really is awful, a real baby name and with the worst connotations. What about Richard/Ritchie if you like that sort of thing? or Willoughby if you want something that sounds like Digby but can be shortened and doesn't begin with a D.

love4lady · 14/09/2010 22:49

from your list I like Freddie best, a name to be proud of! we're considering that too if we get pg with a boy :)

fraid i dont like Digby or Dickie though, especially Dickie think your wee one would get teased for that

good luck whatevr you decide

pointydog · 14/09/2010 22:23

lolol @ massive dog
