Chiara? Paloma? Allegra? Valentina?

Does anyone have an opinion on these names?

DH and I are a bit of a mixture of different heritages so we didn't want something too English or popular!

Do you think these are pretty names that could work well in the UK and potentially abroad in the future?

I love Allegra, I dont know any Allegra's, (apart from that chef) Paloma may become popular, we nearly named our puppy Paloma, but dd who's 2 couldnt pronounce it.

Remotew · 25/09/2010 20:37

Valentina.

pigindisguise · 25/09/2010 20:36

Valentina is beautiful. Paloma also nice. Chiara's ok but I don't like Allegra, just makes me think of a car

ladyflapperflop · 25/09/2010 20:19

Just noticed this thread again!

Lexx- Valentina is a lovely name! May I ask if your DD is known by her full name?

Paloma Faith is a more contemporary namesake than Paloma Picasso.

Lexx · 23/09/2010 18:20

My daughter is Valentina and everyone always comments on how beautiful her name is!

ladyflapperflop · 08/09/2010 17:01

Yes, car manufacturers have a lot to answer for- ruining pretty names!

They all sound like Vauxhalls to me. Sorry!

loobylu3 · 08/09/2010 11:07

I love Valentina and Paloma- feminine and unusual!

ladyflapperflop · 07/09/2010 13:28

flower1988- go for it- Allegra is a beautiful name!

Allegra is really great - my favourite! I might have to borrow it for my DD who's 2 weeks away!

BeccaandEvie · 07/09/2010 09:12

I like Chiara. I know of one who spells it slightly differently though - Kiara (and I prefer it that way if I'm honest).

ZZZenAgain · 07/09/2010 09:05

I didn't know about the bedlinen etc. MIL gave me tht Paloma Picasso perfume come to think of it, first Christmas after I met her. Should that have told me something?! lol

ilovemydogandMrObama · 07/09/2010 08:20

Anyone remember the Paloma perfume. Barftastic.

Love Allegra.

MmeLindt · 07/09/2010 08:18

I just remember working in a furniture store in Germany in the mid 90s and we had loads if Paloma Picasso stuff. Bedlinen, cutlery, tableware. Quite garish and expensive.

ZZZenAgain · 07/09/2010 07:24

Piasso is not doing well on this thread! Can see why you have been put off the name, didn't know a thing about her - other than the perfume.

Presume Paloma means dove, as in dove of peace?

mamaloco · 07/09/2010 07:16

No dirt, but a bit of a Paris Hilton of the 80's, tried everything she could do with her name, perfumes, jewels, cosmetics, art galleries.... She was a bit more talented or clever than Paris though! Very attention seeking but then her dad was a despicable human being may be a good artist but a misoginist pig. I just remember her talking on french TV from my teenage years and not liking her (soooo long ago I might be completely wrong). Grin

ZZZenAgain · 07/09/2010 07:00

depends a bit on where you live. They will stand out a bit but they are ok. With Chiara, you may have to explain that the Italian "ch" is pronounced "K". I am not sure that people all over the UK are aware of that but it is no more of a big deal than having say an Irish name which is pronounced very differently to the way English speakers would assume looking at it written down - and people are getting used to those type of names.

I don't know if Allegra is so nice pronounced with an English accent because of what we do to the "r" but all of the names are nice enough and none will strike people as weird or laughable or ugly IMO

ladyflapperflop · 06/09/2010 20:45

Well, they seem to be liked and disliked in equal measure on here!

Do you think these names work okay over here?

dish up the dirt on PP please.

I like Chiara and I like Allegra too. Don't really like Paloma that much.

ladyflapperflop · 06/09/2010 17:25

mamloco- I don't know much about Paloma Picasso- was is she v unpleasant?

mamaloco · 06/09/2010 15:30

It is not picasso himself who put people off, or may be? he was a disgusting human being Hmm. It is paloma picasso, not very nice lady.

GuntherMcKilocodie · 06/09/2010 13:58

Presuming one of you has Italian heritage? My dh is Italian and we wanted an italian name too. I loved Allegra, but Dh wasn't keen. We have a Lucia. Not keen on the others tbh.

wisteria12 · 06/09/2010 12:58

I love Paloma and Valentina. I like Allegra, but I'm not so keen on Chiara.

ValiumSingleton · 06/09/2010 12:40

Paloma or Allegra.

Chiara is ok, but I prefer Clara. Valentina is beautiful, but it's a bit too much. And Val and/or Tina aren't enough
