How popular is the name Amelie?

Also, can I point out that this is the baby names thread and people are asking for opinions on names. If you are going to get offended because someone doesn't like a name or thinks it is pretentious you are probably best not looking in this section.

I know 7 who are Amelia/Amelie/Milly short for one or the other. I think it will date very quickly.

It's very similar to Emily, which was the #1 name for a while. So something that is basically the same as the #1 is not unusual. It's pretty but there are a fair few Emilias/Emilys/Amelies

But I think that Amelie has become an accepted name now in it´s own right & I wonder how many people really see it as a version of Amelia for example, and therefore not to be used as the English version is good enough.

I agree with daisystone and KERALA1, it should be for people with French connections, sorry!

I know an Amelie, and also an Amelia, i think it's quite common now.

Good daisystone finally someone who agrees with me . Of course you can pick names from other cultures if you like but I reserve the right to think it sounds abit peculiar to pick a French version of a perfectly decent name when neither of you are French or have any connection to France.

It is rubbish to say it is similar to Amelia therefore it is fine. You may as well say it is fine to call your son Guillaume instead of William or your daughter Victoire instead of Victoria.

It is pretentious and silly if you have no connection to France and no French blood.

It is even worse if you only discovered the name after watching a film.

I think that it´s a lovely name.
Amelia always sounds old fashioned & frumpy to me.

It's popular but pretty, I have heard Amelia a lot more. Just because its popular doesn't effect how nice the name is. I picked the most popular name for dd2, she is now almost 3 and she has never met another one in her playgroup, Jo Jingles etc. I would be wary of disregarding a name I really liked just because I felt it was too popular, in case I regretted it a few years later, mind you I might be a bit chavvy

Very popular, know loads but don't like it at all, too wishy washy. Amelia is far better, the 'ia' makes it a stronger name.

I think it's a lovely name and was on my shortlist, but didn't choose it just because there are so many amelies these days, and amelias.

Very popular especially because of the film and agree that it will date because of it. I also think that because of the film it doesn't suit someone unless that they are quirky, dark, and petite. I met an Amelie who was a solid little girl with red hair and pink skin and the name just seemed ironic. Sounds harsh but couldn't help but think it.

I have a 9 month old Amelie, haven't met any others yet. Be prepared for people to mistake it for Amelia all the time, but we have no regrets, and think it's a beautiful name (obviously). P.S we're not common OR French. :)

I knew a Pierre at college and no one batted an eyelid and he wasn't french. Amelie is a beautiful name. People don't haLF spout tosh! Hmmm, what about Tosh as a name?

I know loads of Amelies, also Amelia, and many Millies too, so that must prove it is very generally liked, non?

If you want an unusual name, look elsewhere though.

I loved Amelie when I was pregnant with DD but DH said it was too popular because of the film so I relented. Since I have not met a single Amelie :(

Despite all the hype I am yet to meet another Amelia or Millie and don't care when I do. It's a beautiful name for a beautiful little girl.

I was worried about how popular a name it was, but I can honestly say I have no regrets. I'm so glad I didn't go with our less popular second choice.

If you want Amelie go for it, you could pick a less well known name that has a surge in popularity the following year anyway.

I disagree. Amelie is only one letter different from Amelia, so I don't think it sounds too French for an English person to use.

But Pierre is very French and would sound odd if there was no French connection.

Don't know any. I have two children - 6 and 3.

Don't see why you have to be french to use it either - so many names in common usage and not typically English, and I know loads of people who have used Irish / Welsh / Scottish / American names, without there being a relevant link, and people don't seem to necessarily expect you to be Irish to have a Naiomh either! So don't know why you have to have a french link to use a french name!
