What do you think of Deborah as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

@MamaLazarou - dammit you got there before I did. Grin

stanzatwo · 08/05/2025 18:51

Dated but a sweet nickname like Debo is acceptable

Escapingagain · 02/05/2025 16:09

I knew a few teenagers in the 90’s called Debbie and even then it seemed to old for them. I’m not a fan.

BootballJoy · 02/05/2025 13:35

Sorry really not a fan! Debbie is ok, just (or Deb, Debs, Debo) but there's something dreary about Deborah as a full name.

Sheyifunmi34 · 01/05/2025 20:56

Rubbish and Disgusting my birth name is Deborah my dad gave me the name but I dislike it so much to the point that I hate myself I wished my parents gave me another name like Michelle or Maria I see them more as common names and lovely not dumpy Debra or Deborah 👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾ewww

sunfunandmum · 04/09/2010 08:59

The one I know insists on Deb as the short form and that's fine. Kids at school won't associate it with the 70 s and by the time she's grown up the adult feeling for it will have changed. I'd say yes! I haven't brushed up on the rules lately but a high court judge could have it as a first name and so could a rock star

HarderToKidnap · 04/09/2010 08:43

Devorah is a nice alternative, avoids "Debs".

weegiemum · 04/09/2010 08:43

Well I'm 1970 so I suppose I was on the end of the trend ....

ValiumSingleton · 04/09/2010 08:42

Weegiemum, I think Suzanne is the 70s name and Susan was the 60s choice.

ValiumSingleton · 04/09/2010 08:40

I don't like it, but I only think I don't like it (because I'm influenced by the fact that it's so dated). I know this because I think Ruby, Phoebe and Libby are very pretty. so how is it possible to dislike Debbie?

Deborah is ok, but it is one of those names which always gets shortened, like say Christopher.

weegiemum · 04/09/2010 08:38

I know 2 Deborahs, both in their mid-late 20s. One is ALWAYS "Debs" the other can take that but prefers Deborah.

70's names will take a while to come back, I think. I'm a Susan, and we don't get many of them these days but there were 4 in my class at primary school!

tummytickler · 04/09/2010 08:33

I really like it.
I mentioned it to dh, but he is undecided. I even think Debbie is cute for a small girl.
But I would hate to be called Debbie as an adult, as it is a very childish nn, but can you insist that you are called Deborah? Probably not.

FattyArbuckel · 03/09/2010 19:23

I love it
Best friend at primary was Debra

Well it was one of the options for our DD (adult now), and I think she was pleased we chose something else.

I love the name Debbie tooBlush

I do like the proper spelling.....not Debra!

Lora69 · 03/09/2010 17:42

omg, so so awful!! sorry

LaTristesse · 01/09/2010 11:03

Another 70s born Deborah here, and I hate it. I hate Debbie even more though, and even went through a phase of using my middle name to try and feel better about my name! Personally I'd say avoid.

Concordia · 01/09/2010 01:13

i like it, but it does sound dated, as it was so popular in the late 70s.

Rockbird · 01/09/2010 01:08

Love it....but then I'm a Blondie fan :o

DH hates it though so it's out of the running. :(

When I hear of names such as Mabel making a comeback, good god, I would choose Deborah hands down!

Bumbler · 31/08/2010 22:56

I agree that there's nothing at all wrong with it. For some reason Deborah sounds quite fresh but Debbie more dated.

I'd much rather meet a little Deborah than a Madison that's for sure!

SirBoobAlot · 31/08/2010 22:55

Its not a bad name... But it is very 70s.

A1980 · 31/08/2010 22:49

I like it. I wouldn't use it myself but what's wrong with it?!

I know one Deborah and one Debra. One of them is only 24 and she likes being called Debbie or Debs. She's blonde too!

When I think of the ridiculous names some of my friends have given their children and old classics get it in the neck....!

Go for it.

zozzle · 31/08/2010 17:51

I don't mind the full name - v biblical.
