Don't want popular names, what you think of these?

So DP and I are dead set against naming our child one of the 10 or 20 most popular names and thought we had come up with nice ones that not everyone would have.

Do you think these are very popular just now? We're in Edinburgh, that probably has a bearing on it.

BOY:
Noah
Benjamin
Sebastian

GIRL:
Maggie (to be Margaret officially)

We're sort of stuck on Maggie as a name for a girl but names for boys are not coming easily.

Thanks!

Bruce is totally cool. I'd go for that one over Noah any day of the week!

Ben and Noah are popular round our way too.

How about Aidan? Or Cuthbert?

Margaret/Maggie is gorgeous! And not common at all. Lovely choice!

All your boys' names, especially Ben and Seb, are very common round here. Noah is less widespread but still very popular.

Caleb is a nice choice, or how about Quentin? My dh is also Canadian, by the way Smile.

one of my friend's newborn is called Maggie. And yes the boy's names are popular. If i had a boy, it wouldve of been called Caleb.

Arrgh, I thought so. I'm bummed because I love Noah and Ben. We're pretty certain there aren't a lot of Sebastians around these parts so might go for that one.

The discussions have been endless as I'm Canadian and DP is Scottish so name connotations are very different. I originally loved Imogen but DP wouldn't have it because he said it was too posh. He liked the name Bruce but that is a TERRIBLE name where I'm from.

Pretty sure Maggie isn't a popular name up here considering how much the Scots still despise Margaret Thatcher!

Thanks for all suggestions, liking Caleb!

I love Maggie! and have never met one under fifty. It's so cute, and Margaret has great nick names and will come back into fashion. Good choice imo.

Your boys names are a bit less quirky, more predictable. Ben not as common as Jack/Max/Finn, but it's up there. NOah very trendy and will date. Sebastian is one of those names that might not be popular nationally, but if you live in the environment where you feel comfortable using it, then in that pocket of the World it will be popular. Does that make sense? There are either none at all, or a good few.

What about Saul, Robbie, Guy?

sorky · 28/08/2010 11:06

Maggie is popular where I am

collision · 28/08/2010 11:06

Maggie is great but the rest are very popular!

How about

Atticus

Cassius

Malachi

Seth

Moses

Caleb

Maggie is lovely but the boys names on your list are very popular
