Doris.
I think i like it, i think it might go on our list (although dh seems to be the only one allowed a list - he is saying no to all my namesHmm).
Unfortunately the 2nd mn has to be Denise, so it would be something like

Doris Juniper Denise or
Doris Violet Denise.

Anyway - we have a whole list of 4 now, none of which drive me wild but they are ok, as dh will not give in to any of mine at all . . . . .

So, as if i could not guess, any thoughts on Doris?

My DDs call me Doris. When we were teenagers we said "our old woman" for our DM. The teenagers now say "Our Doris".

LiquoriceLila · 27/08/2010 20:55

No no no... dreadful name

mathanxiety · 27/08/2010 18:56

Tummytickler, I hate Darcy too Grin but thought I'd suggest it as it has a sort of similar sound.

I'm glad you won't be using it!

Denise is sounding nicer to me by the minute -- I actually considered it as a mn for DD1 20 years ago. I spent a lovely few hours in the cathedral of St. Denis outside Paris once and the name reminds me of that.

wigglybeezer · 27/08/2010 17:54

I prefer Dorothea.

Bagpusstree · 27/08/2010 17:50

Oh. Maybe not Iris then, might get a little confusing!

SoupDragon · 27/08/2010 17:46

Personally, I think Doris is a horrible name, dumpy and plain sounding.

LetThereBeRock · 27/08/2010 17:40

Doris is terrible.

tummytickler · 27/08/2010 17:18

bagpusstree - my 9 year old dd is called Iris!

I think its quite cute, but not utterly convinced. Think its fine with Denise with another name in between though....

How about Iris?

MyMamaToldMe · 27/08/2010 16:06

Don't like Doris at all I'm afraid. Denise is much nicer.

tummytickler · 27/08/2010 16:02

Do you think it is a bit too 'on trend' with the old lady name thing at the moment?

OP posts:
tummytickler · 27/08/2010 16:01

But it would be Doris Marigold Denise or something like that - not just Doris Denise, which doe sound crappy!
I thought about something similar to Denise, but its a no go (i also tried this with mil name!) with dh.
Dh has already said no to Dorothy, Theodora and Dahlia. I do not like Darcy one bit.
Thanks
Any more opinions out there :)

Love Phyllis!

diddl · 27/08/2010 15:44

Doris is awful.

Quite liking Denise though.

EricNorthmansmistress · 27/08/2010 15:44

Doris!
Doris Blenkinsop. Old old lady name. Rubbish. Doris Denise even worse. Dora is nice, Dara, Dahlia, Ada, Ava, Ida, all nice. Doris - not nice.

Ladyem · 27/08/2010 15:33

I actually like Doris! And I don't think that the second name has to 'go' with the first name. If you think about it how often will you say "Come here, Doris Denise!" Grin

Dory reminds me of Little Johnny Dory from the 'Tiddler' book!!

mathanxiety · 27/08/2010 15:27

Would you consider Dionne, which is another form of Dionysius?

Other names:
Theodora
Dorothea/ Dorothy
Darcy

Doris is lovely

smother · 27/08/2010 13:29

love love love Doris! and it's not yet over-used.

horatia · 27/08/2010 13:23

I quite like Doris but it doesn't go with Denise IMO.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 27/08/2010 12:24

Oooh - Dolly! I like it.

DastardlyandSmugly · 27/08/2010 12:22

I like Doris a lot. DH's nan was called it and was always known as Dolly.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 27/08/2010 12:22

But then there's Dora the Explorer...

If you DH likes Doris, does he like Phyllis? It was my grandma's name (obviously that's not relevant) - I just wondered if there was a theme? I am reading The Children's Book by AS Byatt and there's a little girl called Phyllis in there.

There was a thread recently about grandparents names and some people seemed of the opinion that it could become quite cool - in the way that Doris is becoming.

MamaVoo · 27/08/2010 12:18

And if under-used old lady chic is what you're after, what about Ada? It's not that disimilar to all the Evie's and Eva's, but not one I've heard yet for a child.
