Tarrow, Eben and Selva

Now Eben and Selva I rather like, but Tarrow is a bit more difficult to love (and I'm giving full credit here on the assumption it is not spelt Tarot!!)

Apologies if this is a mumsnetter btw, your kids were very gorgeous Smile

But in English it's a root vegetable! But one of many names that might not cross over internationally as well as one might hope.

BikeRunSki · 27/08/2010 22:40

DS (2 v soon) best friend (2 in Jan) is called Eben. I really like it, it is Turkisj origin and means "Stone" - his dad is a geologist.

CheerfulYank · 27/08/2010 22:40

Everything Pixie said. I don't care if people have a go at my son's name. It's Sam, so good luck. :) Though some people think it's rather boring.

Muser · 27/08/2010 22:36

Taro is a Japanese name, I know someone with it. Googling tells me it means "first son". So there you go.

JaxTellersOldLady · 27/08/2010 22:28

dont take it to heart Lionstar.

I quite like those names, they sound a bit different.

I do know an Eben and also like Selva, not fussed about Tarrow/Tarot sounds too much like Marrow and a card reading for me though.

EAch to their own. I have heard some cracking names while at the park and my cousin is a midwife and she comes home and tells us of all sorts of weird and wonderful names! Grin

Lionstar · 27/08/2010 22:22

Oh dear, seem to have overstepped some invisible MN etiquette

Just though some on the names topic might find some inspiration here. I love to hear of unusual names and salute anyone 'brave' enough to use them. And as Pixie pointed out, no-one has monopoly on a name. These made my ears prick up, so I thought I'd share.

BTW my kids names are pretty unusual, and at least one of them would 'fit' right in to the above list. And they have had their fair share of slating on the names threads - I didn't take it personally though.

Well we don't know that these 3 are siblings (assuming there was more than one family in the park), so it might not be that identifiable.

Tarot would be fab (I had a huge crush on the actor in The Ace of Wands), but would find Taro rather strange.

stinkypants · 27/08/2010 17:53

i agree - and to be fair, if you choose unusual names for your children there are bound to be those who dislike them.

What bothers people is that innocent children's names are published on a public worldwide forum. Especially as the names are quite unusual.

And the comment "Tarrow is a bit more difficult to love" isn't that nice, is it?

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 27/08/2010 12:27

Actually - you are right, Lionstar hasn't been unkind in what has been said - some comments are just horrible on MN baby names, but I think it's the potential horror of logging on and finding your kids named on here that is making people twitchy.

Menshevik · 27/08/2010 12:26

I know a little Eben too... but his sister has a normal, v popular name.
I quite like Tarrow ans Selva too, though thought Selva would be a girl, not a boy tbh.

stinkypants · 27/08/2010 12:22

i dont think lionstar was being any worse than some of the comments people put for other people's ideas - it's just the fact that they were real children - but to be fair she did say they were gorgeous so maybe people are being a little harsh.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 27/08/2010 12:17

Well, I'm not sure either - and I think I might be offended if I found a similar thread and identified my children on it. However, so far, the responses have been positive.

sonniboo · 27/08/2010 11:18

They certainly make a lovely change from Grace, Jack and the likes. But I still don't see why they need to posted on a public forum (without the parents knowledge).

ValiumSingleton · 27/08/2010 09:43

They are unusual, but they all sound quite simple. I don't dislike them. La Selva is a wild wood in spanish I think.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 27/08/2010 09:26

I met an Eben the other day. It's rather nice and I like the other two names too.
Makes a change from Jack, Emily and Grace (not that there's anything wrong with them, just lots around here).

pippibluestocking · 27/08/2010 08:53

I wk with someone called Eben - have never given it a second thought

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 27/08/2010 08:49

Well, they are better than Tarquin.

Surely someone on here has a child named Boden?

ShinyAndNew · 27/08/2010 08:43

I like them. Original but not ott.

shitforbrains · 27/08/2010 08:40

I don't think everyone is touchy and judgey.

Imagine you came on here to find a thread mocking your children's names.

It's very different so someone asking opinions on a name they might wish to use themselves - they are aware that it might not be universally liked, but you are just mocking someone.

FWIW, I think there is nothing wrong with those names, I thought you were going to say 'tallulah does the hula from hawaii' or something.

OnlyWantsOne · 27/08/2010 08:37

... blimey everyone on MN is a bit touchy and judgey atm Hmm

getstuffed · 27/08/2010 08:32

Judging by the amount of us un-inspired and struggling, perhaps to assist with naming our kids Grin

mollymax · 26/08/2010 22:10

TBH I would not be at all happy to log on here and find my girls names bandied about.
My girls have unusual names.
