Arlo - is it trendy now?

Hi
we had been happily planning to call our baby boy Arlo, believing it to be pretty unusual, when suddenly a friend called her baby Arlo & a nursery nurse mentioned it was getting very popular in London. Have any of you met any little Arlo`s? Is it actually quite fashionable?

Thanks for your advice

D0G- what about Rufus, Hector, Kester, or Magnus?

Not met any but have heard it mentioned much more. I like it though.

Love Jago which someone else mentioned earlier. I would have used this is a friend hadn't gotten to it first!

tummytickler · 27/08/2010 12:07

Valium - well, maybe. They do not sound very fresh to my ears. I just get that 'oh, another one' feel, the same way I would about Eve names, even though they are not quite as popular as that.
Will date big time imo.
I agree Arnaud is cooler.
Milo is so overdone also.

yellowflowers · 27/08/2010 10:05

I haven't actually met one but have thought of it as a name getting more popular, in north London at least - along with Milo.

ValiumSingleton · 27/08/2010 09:17

Tummytickler, would you say that names ending in o are become a bit stale now?

ValiumSingleton · 27/08/2010 09:16

There seem to be a few about. Natasha Kaplinsky has an Arlo I think/=. Arnaud is cooler in my humble opinion.

shitforbrains · 27/08/2010 08:42

I know a couple of Arlo's (west London).

It was also the name of the little boy in the book 'Novel about my wife' which might account for some of its use.

diddl · 27/08/2010 07:48

I love it & if husband had too I would currently have a teenage one.

Also like Jethro & Milo tbh.

:o @ Speedy

Like the batwing jumper analogy! Ahhh...takes me back to my childhood... Anyway, this is a problem you simply can't avoid. If you give your child a grim old lady name it will become popular and bang! Batwings on. If you give your child an international name it will become popular and bang! Batwings on. Just enjoy your child, enjoy calling him your favourite name and sod all the rest.

SpeedyGonzalez · 27/08/2010 00:28

skye, don't sweat it. Scotmum is right (well, howdy, you sweaty old gimmer Wink)- if you like a name, go for it. I chose a very 'popular' name for my DD because it was also my mother's name. I used to feel that I had to explain to everyone why we chose it, in a 'We're not being fashionable, really, there's a family connection, see? See? We have a 'right' to the name!' sort of way. What bollocks! If you like the name, go for it and to hell with anyone who thinks badly of you. And don't think badly of yourself, either, while you're at it.

I know one Arlo, he's a right cutie. Had never heard of it before him, but I think it's a cute name.

Good luck with the birth!

skidoodly · 27/08/2010 00:07

It's not about anyone having dibs on a name, some people just prefer not to give their children names that are super trendy.

It's like dressing them in a batwing jumper they can never take off.

skyeplusbump · 26/08/2010 22:25

withorwithoutyou · 26/08/2010 19:41

hasn't natasha plinkyplonk got one?

CaptainNancy · 26/08/2010 19:36

I love the name Arlo, but it clashes with our surname.

MamaVoo · 26/08/2010 19:26

I've only heard it on here. I doubt it'll be popular in my area as we're near Harlow (commonly called Arlow).

migola · 26/08/2010 19:20

definitely getting popular (SE)

anonymousbird · 26/08/2010 18:42

I like it, and don't know any. I do know a mum who didn't want Arlo, as she already knew one or two and so instead she called the poor little darling HARLOW.

She is from overseas and didn't understand... poor sausage. Her DP, however, IS from these shores so should have known better!!!

There is a reason people don't called their kid HARLOW!

And the reason is Harlow. Nuff said.

Arlo is really nice.

MrsJohnDeere · 26/08/2010 18:35

Getting v. popular here, Herts.
