Your colleugue may have a point. My brother Andrew was born in the same year as Prince Andrew, but about 6 months before. Everyone assumes he was named after him.

diddl · 26/08/2010 13:35

I don´t mind Florence, but I think Floss/Flossie are awful.

seeker · 26/08/2010 13:00

Who cares?

Spacehoppa · 26/08/2010 13:00

Flornece is a nice name anyway. We have a Siena in the family although its spelt the other way

skidoodly · 26/08/2010 12:55

hula

Florence is a more dateable name than WIlliam or Harry though, which are classics.

I actually think Florence Welch has a lot to answer for in the high numbers of baby Florences around, so it will be more like a 2008-2012 name IMO.

I just think the PM using the name has pushed it over the line into being a "me too" name, and I do think that people who use it now will get comments about the PM's DD.

If you think the name Florence is so great that it doesn't matter, then go for it. But it could be annoying to some. I know it would irritate me.

Barbeasty · 26/08/2010 12:07

Or they might go with DH's comment of "did they go on holiday there 9 months ago?"

Although this is mostly because we didn't choose the name Florence for that reason.

If you like the name use it.

Hulababy · 26/08/2010 12:07

Fair enough skidoodly.

I personally just don't think the fact the PM has a baby called Florence will mean the name is always dated back to 2010. In the same way that I don't think the name Leo dates back to whenever it was the Blair's had their son. TBH I don't even think names like William, Harry, etc date them back to the early 1980s either.

That's just my thoughts though and, as you say, people may feel differently.

morganlebuffay · 26/08/2010 11:21

Who said we all had to think the same thing? Nobody is disputing that it's popular & will date. You think the Cameron baby will date it, others don't. Confused

skidoodly · 26/08/2010 11:02

Of course it will date the name. It will be dated anyway because of its recent surge in popularity, and lots of people will copy the Camerons (whilst utterly convinced they have "always loved the name") so it will become even more ubiquitous.

Some people don't mind giving their child a name that every third child their age is called and that everyone is entirely sick of five years later when they know 10 of them.

Others do.

I know if I had been considering Florence I would consider it a lucky escape that FC was born first so I could choose something else.

We don't all have to think the same things about names.

morganlebuffay · 26/08/2010 10:49

Well it's a matter of taste, isn't it? Personally I'm not keen on Florence, but I seem to be in the minority nowadays so I wouldn't expect anyone else to really care that it's not my cup of tea. I do like Floss and Flossie, though the Florences I know use Flo, so that's something to consider.

bytheMoonlight · 26/08/2010 10:45

Thanks Bunty

Might start a new thread to see if others think the same as people in RL, or if my friends are as daft as you and I think! Grin

BuntyPenfold · 26/08/2010 10:39

No I think she will love you :)

I can't think what your RL friends are on and they are pretty rude.
I know quite a few Williams, Harry, Leos, Beatrice too. (Not many Eugenies for some reason).

The Cams chose a popular name, that's all.

bytheMoonlight · 26/08/2010 10:36

Samantha Cameron - David Camerons wife

TriplePachyderm · 26/08/2010 10:34

who is sam cam?

bytheMoonlight · 26/08/2010 10:30

I really do love Florence with nn Floss/Flossie.

But everyone I have told irl, and I mean everyone has pulled a Hmm face, now with the added connection to the Camerons I was about to give up with it.

Do you think my daughter will hate me if she goes through life being known as Floss?

OP posts:
BuntyPenfold · 26/08/2010 10:15

Go for Florence if you want to - my Great Aunt Florence was always called Flossie not Florrie.
It is a popular name anyway. Calling your baby Endellion - well, that might be a bit suspect.

morganlebuffay · 26/08/2010 09:49

(er not that baby Cam is not living & breathing Blush , was just speaking figuratively)

morganlebuffay · 26/08/2010 09:47

Mm yes I think of Florence and the Machine much more readily than the Cameron baby when I hear the name Florence. One is a living breathing all-singing all-dancing flame-haired woman, the other is a tiny, presumably quite non-descript babe in arms, just like the thousands of other baby Florences in the country born to our friends, aquaintances and family. Yeah Florence will date to this period, but I think Flo Cam is a symptom (as it were) not the cause. I really don't think of the Blairs when I hear Leo... though Leo(nardo) di Caprio was popular at that time iirc...

Threelittleducks · 26/08/2010 09:03

I would think of the beautiful Florence Welch from Florence and the Machine LONG before I realised that it is the name of the Cam baby.

Florence is a gorgeous name :)

And, in a few years, is anyone going to care?

Hulababy · 26/08/2010 08:59

Skidoodly Wed 25-Aug-10 23:42:37
Florence Cameron is going to date that name to 2010.

Not sure I understand. Florence is one of the names of the year as it is. I don't think the PM using the name is going to be a big issue.

I am named Claire. Ws number 2 name year after I was born. And yes I knew loads of Claires over the years, around my age. But I can honestly say that having a name "of the time" has be of absolutely no worry, concern or hassle ni the slightest.

Hulababy · 26/08/2010 08:56

I don't think people will assume you have copied TBH. It is one of the fastest growing names in the girl's name popularity charts for 2010. There are lots of baby Florence right now.

TrillianAstra · 26/08/2010 08:55

He's the Prime Minister, not the heir to the throne. By the time your daughter is old enough to write her own name no-one will be interested in Florrie Cameron.

'Date her name to 2010'? Well, no more than being 4 in 2014 or 20 in 2030 will date her to 2010.

diddl · 26/08/2010 08:48

I like Hebe.
Also, Harriet, Cecily & Miranda.

I think some might think that you were copying the Cams-unless you had previously mentioned liking the name.

SkiHorseWonAWean · 26/08/2010 08:41

If you like it, use it! I called my son Cameron and got a few wags saying "did you name him after the PM?". Er no. Hmm However, I am looking forward to decorating his bedroom with newspaper clippings which read "Cameron destroys Scotland", "Cameron responsible for the poor eating from the gutter" and "Cameron woos America". Wink

CupcakesHay · 26/08/2010 08:29

Load of rubbish - if you had Florence picked out and liked it, then stick with it!
