Ruben or Reuben?

I ended up going with DH's preferred spelling as it meant I could get the name I wanted - he wouldn't budge and was willing to pick another instead.
It does mean I'm not that vigilent when people spell it the 'english' way, and more often than not, he has the wrong spelling on his name badges etc......

I have a Reuben and agree with many others - we looked at the alternative spellings of the name before DS arrived and tbh, they all looked very wrong. Reuben seemed the most 'correct' spelling, for want of a better word! It just looked right and we both agreed on the name straight away, which is a bonus really!

OP I feel for you - had lots of disagreements trying to come up with a name but we finally settled on this one - but only this!lol

Good luck.

Reuben - and I would have the middle name James.

Kenny Rogers song - Reuben James.

Reuben

poppydaisy · 24/08/2010 11:58

It depends where you/your ds may live longer term. In the UK Reuben is fine, but in most European countries (certainly Germany and Spain) and America Ruben would be much easier to live with.

Bicnod · 24/08/2010 06:31

Reuben

mathanxiety · 24/08/2010 05:56

It's Ruben all over Central and South America, and probably the predominant spelling in the US too thanks to Hispanic immigration. But I would spell it Reuben.

pippylongstockings · 23/08/2010 21:30

Reuben

loopyloops · 23/08/2010 21:24

Reuben.

I'd assume you were a bit dim couldn't spell if I came across a Ruben.

mellymooks · 23/08/2010 21:21

No he isn't Spanish, he thinks it looks wrong spelt Reuben as until we were looking at names he had only ever seen it written Ruben.

I am the opposite and have only ever known it spelt Reuben and after the responses on here it seems to suggest that most people would write Reuben if asked.

He will not be budged though and as I can't bear the thought of our son going through life constantly having to correct the spelling for everyone I fear we will not be having it as our name, which is a real shame as it's one of the few that I like!

mumtoabeautifulbabyboy · 23/08/2010 20:38

We also had it on our 'list'. Definitely Reuben if you're British. IMO Ruben just looks odd and like you don't know how to spell properly.

However as others have said, if you are Spanish then Ruben would be correct. Is your OH of Spanish origin? - otherwise, why is he so bothered about using the more 'alternative' spelling?

ValiumSingleton · 23/08/2010 20:22

Ruben is the accepted spelling in Spain, so if you're Spanish, then that's correct!

SoupDragon · 23/08/2010 19:59

Reuben. Although i do know a Ruben.

Galena · 23/08/2010 19:57

Reuben.

There was a Ruben on CBeebs this morning though.

isittooearlyforgin · 23/08/2010 19:07

by the way just wanted to say I love the name Reuben!

sonniebonnie · 23/08/2010 18:38

Either Ruben or Reuben, but NOT Rueben (which is the plural of turnips in German Grin)

mmmperuna · 23/08/2010 18:32

I know an 11 year old Rueben - his paents wanted an unusual spelling - all its meant is they've spent the last 11 years spelling it out
