Boys names, 'normal' please.

I am pregnant with DC2. I have a DS and we have used our boys name. Really struggling with another.

I like Harry, DH isn't quite so sure but I may be able to persuade him.

There are names that are ok but I don't love them.

Can't have names in the family (according to DH) so out is Daniel, Callum, Matthew, Sam, James. All names that I like!

I like traditional 'normal' names. None of this Benedict/Cassius stuff (appologies to anyone who likes these or who has named their DS's these names but they are just not for me).

I also don't care how common it is. If I like it, I will use it (apart from Jack, far too many).

Detectivepotato I should have added Josh and Jacob to my list if i'd thought a bit more.

The two brothers of Joshuas I know are called Ryan and Matthew - not much help to you really.

Luke? I know quite a few Lukes.
Charlie?

Thanks. I think Alexander, Benjamin and Harry are good starts. I am always looking for more though.

LOL, I was left with the next level away from being very traditional, as all the most traditional ones have been mentioned already :) Hope you find something you like.

DetectivePotato · 21/08/2010 23:05

Ummm, sorry not my taste. Blush

I am bloody fussy though but thanks for the suggestions.

Can't move, sadly. DS1 is in 3rd year at uni now, in a very different area, ao no problem there and the other 4 are all HE, now, so we miss the worst of that kind of thing.

We don't have the same sort of school set up in Scotland as they do in England. Kids go to their local school for the most part, so no choices, really. Anyway, all the secondary schools are much the same in this area. They all have their own community police officers, whose job is to work in the school. We just have to deal with all the neds and street violence, drink and rugs that surround us. No one here goes out alone after dark.

You have to be quite careful about names, unless you ant to use one of the jayden/kyro/kenzie/k'tln(honestly) type names. Definitely no Marcus/Caspar/Octavia/Arabella type names here. I really wanted a Gabriel, a Lachlann, an Oisin and a Taliesin, but couldn't have any of them.

K'tln is Caitlin a la our town.

DetectivePotato · 21/08/2010 22:19

Rachel I guess names I consider 'normal' are the bland, boring ones like Ben, Harry etc.

Would not consider Harold, Richard or Howard but like people said its hard to know what I consider 'normal'.

stressedHEmum Shock. Thats awful!

mopsyflopsy · 21/08/2010 22:17

stressedHEmum, that is really sad to hear Sad. Is there any way you could move out of the area and/or get your children in a different school?

rachel234 · 21/08/2010 22:12

This thread just shows what different tastes we all have.

What one of us considers 'normal' others consider dull and others again too unusual Smile.

Without knowing someone's background and taste, it is very difficult to offer helfpul name suggestions.

A bleaching is a local term for a beating. Working hard and being polite makes you a target for teasing and sometimes much worse. One of DS1's school friends was beaten unconscious outside the school gates because she was a "snob" i.e. hard working, relatively nicely spoken etc. DS1 also took a very great of stick, verbal and physical, as well as having his stuff stolen, his work trashed etc, because he was a very high achiever.

Ds3 had to be removed from school partly because the bullying he suffered because of his reading and writing issues was so severe.

AS I say, you have to live in a place like this to understand how it is.

beckie90 · 21/08/2010 22:05

haha totaly charleyboo.
yes they do detective. whatever name i pick for a girl im having grace as middle name. my mum had amelia chose when she was preg 2. i like it cause its really pretty and girly

CharlieBoo · 21/08/2010 22:02

I think I also read a Harold and Howard on this thread oh and Richard. I mean Harold! Really!!! I totally get what you mean about names on here, there's a lot of snobbery at times about over used names, Jack, Harry etc but some of the names people come up with on here are hilarious.

Ps - I know 2 oscars but funnily enough there is no Jack in my sons class. Must go on area.

DetectivePotato · 21/08/2010 22:00

Ha ha, Definitely. Plus I think Joshua and Amelia really go together.

OP posts:
beckie90 · 21/08/2010 21:50

haha amelia is on my list 2 my best friend was called it at school, always loved it. good choice, we think alike :)

Takver · 21/08/2010 21:50

mopsyflopsy, yes, to me it is different in feel. I like both names, and if I were choosing a name for a boy, might teeter towards Benedict, but I would count Benjamin (shortened to Ben) as more 'plain'.

mopsyflopsy · 21/08/2010 21:47

StressedHEmum, your description is very helpful. Being German and living in London, I am perhaps a little naive as to people's attitudes elsewhere. I do find it sad though to read that working hard and handing in your work on time gets you a bleaching (I assume this means teasing..?)....

DetectivePotato · 21/08/2010 21:46

Girls name is Amelia. I know its got really popular but I said it to DH years ago and he liked it too and it has stuck. We both like Phoebe too and that has got popular.

Amelia is my absolute favourite name and I will use it if we have a girl.

beckie90 · 21/08/2010 21:31

mines called joshua 2 detectivepotatoe :D

and his middle name is harry.
im same i kinda want a girl as id love 1 of each but dont think id ever have a girl with my partner lol.
what it your girls name?

DetectivePotato · 21/08/2010 21:21

I'm glad to see my DS's name has been suggested. He is called Joshua.

Its hard to describe what I meant as 'normal' names. I had never really heard of people calling their sons Cassius or Benedict until I came on here either. I definitely wouldn't consider Quentin.

I do like Benjamin, Alexander and Harry. I think DH agrees with me on these. Could be a winner in there.

PMSL at Roy and I think I read Stanley.

There are names that have been mentioned that I like, but I just don't love them. Kind of hoping for a girl as we have had our girls name picked out for about 7 years.

stressedHEmum · 21/08/2010 21:09

I live in a very deprived place right on the west cost of Scotland. Benedict here would be a Catholic name (current pope) and as such is asking for trouble, Cassius would be laughed at and made fun of ceaselessly, as would any of those other kind of names. People here do not have those kind of names at all. The life of a child who is viewed as posh or snobby is not worth living here. And I speak from a lot of personal experience. Handing your homework in on time or not swearing is enough to get you a bleaching, never mind a name that is perceived to be unbelievably posh and middle England.

As for what values parents pass on to their children, quite often not many. You have to live in a place like this to understand it.

Clary · 21/08/2010 21:04

If you like Daniel and James and Matthew (I know many many many) but cannot use them may I offer the other very popular names from my DCs' schools:

Oliver
William
Max
Joe/Joseph
Keiran

In all those cases I have to specify which Joe/Dan/Matt I mean so they may fit yr case (ie not whacky - I never have to say which Oscar I mean as we only know one).
