How would you pronounce Cosima?
I also like Eloise... Any thoughts?

DD has two in her class, one is prononuced Coz-eee-ma the other Cos-I-mer. They get cross if you pronounce the wrong one. One is called Mimi for short the other Cozy.

Timbachick · 23/08/2010 19:36

Love Eloise, not sooooooo keen on Cosima though. Sorry

Ephiny · 23/08/2010 19:33

The only Cosima I've heard of is a fictional character in a Barbara Kingsolver novel! She shortened it to 'Codi' which is a bit non-intuitive but better than 'Cossie', I think :)

I actually really like it, though Eloise is nice too, if a bit popular.

Emo76 · 23/08/2010 19:13

Cosima is a bit sloaney, Eloise is lovely IMO

AT1137 · 23/08/2010 14:30

Love Cosima.

mathanxiety · 22/08/2010 23:23

It's traditionally been quite an aristocratic name in Germany.

tammytoby · 22/08/2010 14:03

'horsy looking'

A Cosima looks like a horse.... Confused...

PYT · 22/08/2010 11:42

Posh girl, horsy looking.

foxytocin · 22/08/2010 10:56

Lol at it being shortened to Cossie in the UK.

In Spanish I suppose it would be Cosita which means 'little thing' and is a term of endearment for anyone or thing which is loved.

tammytoby · 22/08/2010 10:35

I love Cosima. Very elegant and feminine.

telsa · 22/08/2010 10:28

Love it - very glamorous. The two I have known are German - one an actress, one a writer.

mathanxiety · 22/08/2010 05:37

gaaaaaagh 13more years

mathanxiety · 22/08/2010 05:36

LOL, Just12moreyears, here's what I think of when I hear Eloise Grin Heloise's helpful hints is a very long running syndicated household help column in the US...

Just13moreyearstogo · 21/08/2010 21:01

Cosima sounds to me like the name a newspaper astrologist would have. I like Eloise (and Elise/Louisa)

momino · 21/08/2010 20:36

sorry, see where you might have been coming from: just heard the ever-so-slightly-different pronunciations in German and Italian. not a massive difference though.

momino · 21/08/2010 20:33

Foxytocin, just out of curiosity, what other way is there to pronounce Cosima except exactly how it is spelt? I've never heard it pronounced in the UK any differently than I'd heard it in Italy.

SofiaAmes · 21/08/2010 15:58

My ex named his dd Cosima and they call her cossie for short which always makes me think of a bathing suit....ugh.

onimolap · 21/08/2010 15:55

I love the name Cosima, but the only one I know in RL had it shortened to Cossie, which just screams 'bathing suit' to me.

foxytocin · 21/08/2010 15:53

I love Cosima and would pronounce it the Italian way. Eloise is used more often in England I expect. I like Eloise too but prefer Cosima.

I like Cosima but prefer Eloise (is my dd'd middle name). I know one 4 yr old Eloise (SW London) but no others.

skylark23 · 21/08/2010 12:48

Thanks for all your feedback - really useful. Cosima seems to be a Marmite name! Eloise seems more popular - are there many young Eloises around? Not keen on nn Ellie though... prefer Ella.

Cosima is terrible, but I like Eloise.
