Just thinking about how on earth anyone ever decides on a name for their child and wondered if anyone knows their parents' shortlists? I'm interested to see how they differ from the shortlists on here today.

I'm Katherine, but was almost Anastasia... DP was almost Morris(!).

So what were you nearly called?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

My dad wanted Penelope and mum wanted Polly.

mummysgoingmad · 20/08/2010 00:07

polly and my last names garrett. Can you imagine the stick i would have got at school polly parrot!

ln1981 · 20/08/2010 00:01

My dad wanted to call me Cindy-not really sure why and whilst im sure its a lovely name and suits some people, all i can think of when i hear it, is the Sindy doll!
The midwife asked my mum to call me Patricia if i was born on St. Patricks day-she was Irish, and i was a day late anyway!

But I dont really like my name at all-Lynne- its just so non-descript to me, not sure what i would want to be called though! Grin

My mum wanted Rachel but changed her mind when I was born. I had big brown eyes, still do actually Grin, and she swapped to a name she thought meant 'cow's eyes'!

It doesn't - and I really like it and much prefer it to Rachel.

Buzzybb · 19/08/2010 23:52

I am a twin and my mother wanted Polly and Molly or April and Avril we are very grateful to my Dad

RedandGreenPlaid · 19/08/2010 23:50

Victoria. Far, far superior to what they actually saddled me with Hmm

Servalan · 19/08/2010 23:46

If my Dad had his way I would have been Mitzi - or Bridget.

My Mum vetoed both suggestions.

seimum · 19/08/2010 23:11

My brother was nearly called Karol

withorwithoutyou · 19/08/2010 23:10

Angharad!

EightiesChick · 19/08/2010 23:09

Richard (if I was a boy, obv.)

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 19/08/2010 23:09

DH's father wanted to call him Tostig Hmm

I would have been Matthew had I been a boy. My mother wanted to call me something Irish (not sure she had a shortlist but she's been pressurising me to use Aoife for a girl for ages) but my father wasn't keen.

nelly83 · 19/08/2010 23:09

I could've been a Chantelle or a Siobhan! I'm a Charlotte!! Thanks dad!

Valpollicella · 19/08/2010 23:09

Rebecca.

My mum only changed her mind when my aunt sad 'Oh, but what if she ends up with a bit of a nose? She'll get called Beaky Becca...' Hmm

snickersnack · 19/08/2010 23:08

Margaret or Rachel. As a teenager I thought I'd had a lucky escape but now think Margaret would be quite cool compared to the name they gave me which was totally standard Seventies five-of-them-in-every-class.

bottyburpthebarbarian · 19/08/2010 23:05

My brother was supposed to be Douglas. Mother and Father had agreed this.

In those days the registrar came round the hospital.

Mum says she tried to say "Douglas" but Alastair came out instead

Katherine was the other option considered, or Leon if I had been a boy.

Prefer both to my real name.

KittyBigglesworth · 19/08/2010 23:02

Elizabeth or Julia.

superdragonmama · 19/08/2010 23:00

DH of one friend registered dd2's name all on his own! - they'd decided on name Poppy (dd1 called Daisy) - he registered her as Martha. My friend NOT PLEASED

shimmerysilverglitter · 19/08/2010 22:56

I kid you not.....Mitzi for a girl, WTF!?
for a boy Timothy.

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 19/08/2010 22:54

Congrats Hester Grin
