Nancy - last minute wobble!

Apologies to all of those who've helped me with this decision before.

We decided that this baby was a Nancy pretty much at the 20 week scan, but did what we said we wouldn't do and bloody told people (along with a load of other names that we might like). With 3 weeks to go, I'm now a little concerned.

Reaction has been very mixed to say the least. We both love it and I know that's the important thing, but is it so terrible?

Most likely to be Nancy Eve (DS is Isaac).

Your thoughts please.

Oh, has provoked some really anti-reactions. That's good I feel - people either hate or love and seeing as I'm getting defensive, I guess I must love and therefore, must use!

Someone mentioned earlier on that you should ask people who hate the name you like which names they like as a means of seeing that people really do like different ones (although they were probably more articulate and succinct than that). I wonder...

I really ike it, I have a Poppy and I would consider it as a name for a sibling in the future. Go for it, we had mixed responses when we liked the name Poppy, but I am so glad we stuck with it, she gets nothing but compliments nowadays and it so suits her.

It's pretty likely that the name Nancy was used as a pet form for Anne way before British people colonised the US, but it's funny how associations are made. I think that Nancy has been more consistently used in the States than in UK.

I'd think it's a good thing that so many people don't like the name Nancy. Maybe it's not in danger of becoming too popular after all.

But I also think it's normal to wobble about a name, especially if you get unasked for comments about it.

I really dislike Nancy, I'm afraid. It sounds like an American nickname to me.

There will ALWAYS be people who don't like the name of your choice, always, however it seems that for this name the people in the 'like' camp are in the majority! Smile

Agree with thisside, don't like Nancy and can't really see why people like it. I also think of Nancy Drew, - Reagan, - sinatra. However, names are personal and many people do like the name, so you'll be safe.

I also agree with another poster who said that Nancy eve is difficult to say with the 'ee's running into each other. You need to match Nancy with a second name beginning with a consonant. just my opinion Smile.

I really do not like Nancy nor do I know any little Nancies. I find it very American (Nancy Reagon) and not very elegant.

Agree, Nancy is a lovely name but is seriously in danger of becoming massively popular.

You are already about 5yrs too late to be original/different/quirky.

It is definitely mainstream in some areas. Check out the name stats.

There are hundreds of gorgeous names just waiting to be discovered again.Smile

Not a fan here, reminds me of Mrs R and her twinsets.

A few years ago I met a little Nancy Rose though and she was a total dote so it almost changed my mind.

Anyway, who cares what other people think? It is a perfectly usable name, and more importantly it is up to you. You're the one who is going to be saying it every day for at least the next 18 years!

I love it but if you're have a wobble why not put Anneliese on the bc.

I love Nancy though. It fits in with all the Millies and Daisys but it sounds stronger. JMO

Charming name, classic and elegant I think.
I also live in SE London and have only met one Nancy so far. I think Greta is beautiful too btw.

Stick with it! It's lovely! And even if it wasn't, you clearly have a connection to the name and you'll regret it if you don't use it.

My 8 week old has my second choice of name due to a last minute wobble following the birth, and I really can't settle with what we've called her. I don't use her name myself and I flinch slightly whenever anyone else does!

Ooh, hadn't worked out the RoboCop connection. Our surname is spelt slightly differently. Not too bothered by this - I reckon DH will only be further swayed to go for it when he knows there is an association with RoboCop.

Our surname rules out a lot of middle names. Ella Allan and Pearl Allan sound silly (although both lovely names).

The only thing with Nancy Allen is that there's an actress of that name (she was the female lead in RoboCop). That occurred to me straight away when you mentioned the name, but I don't think it should be a a problem as she's at least relatively obscure and unlikely to be the first thing your DD's future classmates think of when they hear the name.

Hmmm - middle names are tricky. I have been known to spend much longer on a middle name...

Grace would probably not go because of the 'S' sound.
