Hamish, Callum or ???

We still have quite a few weeks to go before our baby boy is born, but we are not getting very far with names.

Weeks ago, when we found out we were having a boy, my husband threw out Hamish, and I said I quite liked it. I told him I liked Callum, and he told me he likes that. So, we appear to have two possibilities. But somehow because we've not thought about it lots, or come up with other options, I feel a bit odd about them both.

What do you all think about them? And any other similar ideas??

Middle name will be Wallace - my mothers maiden name (and a thus a Scottish tradition). We live in England, and don't think there is any problem with being English with a Scottish sounding name, but would be interested to know if any of you really disagree with that!

Hamish and Calum (spelt this way) are my nephews names. I like them both.

:) I used to know a Hamish but he was always Jamie as a child and teenager, but once he moved into a working 'adult' world, he became Hamish.

We are based in London, and so it is really lovely to have so many positive opinions for Hamish.

I know that the decision should be uniquely based on what my OH and I think, but I'm so encouraged by so many strong votes for Hamish.

I know a Hamish and it suits him so much. It is a gorgeous name. He gets called Hamie,(to rhyme with Jamie) love it love it.

How about Arran?

I think most Scottish names are beautiful, and choosing between Hamish and Callum is too difficult so I'm not going to..

I love Hamish and would quite like it for DS2 but it's DS1's middle name (almost beyond caring, tbh!). We've had lots of positive comments about it, though. The only negative comment we got, strangely, was from my (Scottish) FIL.

Not keen on Callum - connotations with troublesome tots.

I love Murdo (DH not sure) and I love, love, love Angus - but is our cat's name (again, I'm almost beyong caring).

Do you like Patrick - or is it too Irish for you?

I quite like Hamish but I don't think my hubby would be at all keen (he's English, I'm Scottish). My brother, Callum, wants us to name our child after him if it's a boy. I like both.

I adore Hamish, and if I had any Scottish heritage then I would have used it for one of my sons. I haven't though so went with William instead. If I have any more children though I may be tempted.

I have a Hamish! He's three now. The name really suits him - agree with the poster who said it's cute for a little one, but strong for a man (and DS is a very cute, but strong-willed and spirited chap!). DH was born and brought up in Scotland (we wanted a name to reflect DH's spiritual homeland) and we live in London, so have not bumped into another Hamish at nursery/preschool, which is nice. Have always had very positive reactions to his name down here in Sassenach-land. Not a single raised eyebrow - always, 'What a lovely name!' (and I don't think people are just being polite).
But, most importantly, DS LOVES his name and seems to appreciate that it is relatively unique - at least in his little world. He is very firm when people try to shorten it to Ham/Hammo, 'No. My name is HAMISH!'
As you can probably gather, I am very much in favour of you calling your son Hamish Grin

This is a very belated thank you so much to everyone for your suggestions and opinions on Callum and Hamish.

Based on the popularity of Callum in Scotland (and the fact that too many people don't like it much) we've abandoned that one.

Hamish is still there (I was pleased to see a pretty positive response), but I'm still not sure about any other names!?!

All your suggestions were really interesting. I quite like Struan and I love Brodie, but Brodie is terrible with our surname, and Struan I've not heard of before and will see what my OH thinks...

Hamish for sure. Absolutely great name. Callum I am not keen on at all - feels like every second guy in Scotland is called Callum.

Angus is also gorgeous. Love it. Would use it except it doesn't really go with surname. Bugger.

So to conclude - Hamish or Angus!!!

No one ever spells or pronounces it right though - he seems to be eternally Frasier!

Hamish is a fabulous name. If I had another DS, he would be Hamish. Callum is not my cup of tea, to put it nicely.

I've just given my son Hamish as a middle name - my English friends go very quiet when I tell them. I love it (being scottish) - but their silence speaks volumes! Wink

My sister and I both have Scottish names but noone ever comments. Love Hamish, it's a name that goes from boy to man.
