Is it for a boy or a girl?

And do you think it may be whisper it a bit too pretentious?

Would be put with very strong English surname - but baby was concieved in Greece Grin

my daughter is 9 weeks old so not at the playground teasing age yet!

Reaction from people has been mixed. People who seem surprised by the name usually are because they've never heard of it, rather than thinking its a boys name. IMO it is a classic and beautiful name. The greek goddess was came before the books!

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 21/08/2010 14:25

Sorry, that last sentence should have said a goddess name, rather than a girls name. No offence to any with a male Artemis. Lots of girls and unisex names used to be boys names, no reason the cross over shouldn't happen the other way too.

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 21/08/2010 14:08

My DH is really keen on Artemis. I am coming round to the idea, but now worried about the Artemis Fowl books. I don't want poor future DD to have to go through life with playground jibes of "why have you got a BOYS name?". Does your Artemis get that RnB?

I understand it is explained in the books...could someone who has read them tell me...why does the male hero have a girls name?

RnB · 19/08/2010 15:41

My Artemis is often called Arty :)

Feminine to my ears. Lovely!

CuppaTeaJanice · 17/08/2010 13:06

I know a little boy called Artemis.

His sister is Calypso, so his parents must like unusual names!

Atlasive · 17/08/2010 11:57

I like it, and think it sounds less pretentious than some names that are popular on MN.

JebusBuiltMyHotQuads · 17/08/2010 07:33

I've always known it as a female name.

I love it, use it! Smile

kiwidreamer · 16/08/2010 15:44

Artemis is a little pretentious but its still very nice, no more than some of the fancier English names - Arty or Missy for NN?

It is a girls name but funnily it doesnt feel wrong for a boy from my uncultured perspective, its quite masculine sounding but at the end of the day it would be a bit mean to purposefully name your little boy a girly name IMO.

rachel234 · 16/08/2010 12:08

Artemis is lovely and feminine. Arty is a cute nickname.

Tn0g · 14/08/2010 20:38

I worked with a lovely woman called Artemis many moons ago.

She was an art teacher so was arty by name and by nature.

lou33 · 14/08/2010 20:30

i like it, it's definitely a girls name

arty is sweet, and rnb's baby is indeed adorable

PussinJimmyChoos · 14/08/2010 20:18

I know a female Greek Artemis also, although its actually Artemisia....it does get shortened to Arty though so be warned!

101damnations · 14/08/2010 20:12

I love it and wanted it for dd2.DH vetoed it though.

GladioliBuckets · 13/08/2010 21:16

Do you know I've deliberately never read the Artemis Fowl books because it's a girl's name so how is it explained, Hassled? Does he have dumb or nasty parents?

V nice for a girl. Other pretty Greek names: Alethia (means truth, pronounced Aleethya), Eleftheria (means freedom, pronounced ElefthERia), Chryssa (means gold.) I've always loved the name Ilias for a boy (pronounced EElyas)

tyler80 · 13/08/2010 18:31

Artemis is our online room booking system at work so that'd be a no from me.

Although it's pretty crap so will probably disappear in a few years.

Loujalou · 13/08/2010 09:55

Nope its a boys name too - I have had a look on fb at some of my relatives who have male friends called Artemis.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 13/08/2010 09:50

Yep, definitely a girl's name - although I think it's quite mascualine sounding

alexandrageddes · 13/08/2010 09:47

Beautiful name, the Greek version of Diana, and not only the goddess of hunting, but also the goddess of the moon on earth. A really interesting and pretty name and I don't think it's at all pretentious, just unusual.

ExitPursuedByABear · 13/08/2010 09:26

Definitely for a girl - and I love it and don't think it is too pretentious at all.

Loujalou · 13/08/2010 09:23

I am Cypriot and have a male cousin with the name - so thought it was a boys name too.

RnB · 12/08/2010 22:06

My baby daughter is Artemis. It suits her and is lovely imo :).

Chynah · 12/08/2010 21:54

Artemis was a goddess - lovely name.

SkiHorseWonAWean · 12/08/2010 02:27

Gorgeous.

Pretentious perhaps, but at least not yet another xxx.
