Due next month, not sure what I'm having, have a girl and a boy already called Seth and Nancy so want a name which compliments these two.

So far we have a shortlist of:

GIRLS
Clara
Adelaide (Ada)
Olive

BOYS
Ralph
Felix
Gideon
Tom

Adelaide is pronounced ad-a-laid (as in the Australian city)

Clara - Nice
Adelaide (Ada) - No
Olive - Okay

BOYS
Ralph - Penis (this may be generational...)
Felix - Cat food
Gideon - Awful
Tom - Nice

How do you pronounce Adelaide

is it ad-a-lied

or ad-a-layed?

HumphreyCobbler · 12/08/2010 16:02

yes indeed

DH really liked Florence. We already had a Fred. He had no idea at all about Tesco.

I named him after Laurie Lee.

Clara, Rosamund, Beatrice and Laurie are all characters in Margaret Drabble novels that I have loved. I only realised this the other day.

this is spooky

my first son (who I sadly lost) was called Lawrence, to be known as Laurie. Had you considered that by any chance?

i want Rosamund for the mythical next one, but DH says no way

You caused a row with my DH, I just said "I TOLD you she should have been called Beatrice" Grin

CreepyFunbags · 12/08/2010 14:55

I'm not BoF. BoF must be very naughty too.

Creepy - what else is shooting up also out of interest? Thanks.

CreepyFunbags · 12/08/2010 12:12

I like Olive and Ralph best anyway to go with your other names, forgot to say before!

lilllysa · 12/08/2010 12:11

GIRLS
Clara - Nice but makes me think of farmyard animals?! No idea why!!

Adelaide (Ada)- Nice but not keen on Ada

Olive - Nice :)

BOYS
Ralph - Makes me think of the kid on the simpsons

Felix - The cat
Gideon - Nice
Tom - & Jerry

Sorry :( I just go on what comes into my head when hearing the name!

CreepyFunbags · 12/08/2010 11:55

I have a Clara too. I work in the statistics office and you won't believe where it has shot up to in this year's baby names numbers :(

I share your pain and of course I agree! :) I fear I want to deliberately sabotage the rise from obscurity sometimes :)

A few I know have called their children Monty recently and I predict a surge of popularity amongst the Fulham set which will then spread.

HumphreyCobbler · 12/08/2010 10:57

thesecondcoming, I am starting to think we are the same person. We rejected Monty for precisely that reason! I am thinking our politics may differ slightly though Grin

I know Cortina, it is silly but I can't help it. The thing is, you can avoid calling your child a name that is actually popular at the moment, but who can forsee the future? We are just in the vanguard of fasion and thus probably very cool Smile

OP, Ada is fabulous. You have great taste in names.

Cortina · 12/08/2010 10:17

I love Adelaide by the way...Wasn't there a 70s/early 80s TV programme called 'The Strange Affair of Adelaide Harris' or have I made that up? What was it about, if anyone recalls it?
