Evie as the full name?

I am 39 weeks pregnant and we have virtually decided on Evie Annabel if we have a girl. Do you think Evie is okay as a name in it's own right? I like the idea of her having a simple name, rather than a formal name that's shortened (ie Evelyn to Evie), but don't want her to feel like her name is 'twee' as she grows up. Thoughts?

Thanks for all your comments - we will probably stick with Evie but this thread has provoked some good discussion for DH and me (and you put up some good arguments LilMagill!) Murphy's law that we'll have another boy anyway and all the angst will have been wasted!

I'd say go with a full name like Evangeline or Evelyn, then call her Eve or Evie for short.

deaddei · 12/08/2010 18:39

I have an Evie- she's nearly 14. She was the only one in her school till she was in year 5.
I love it.

teameric · 12/08/2010 18:36

I know Evie has become very popular but my DD is the only one in her nursery/school, which I find quite surprising. I have Evie on her bc too even though I mostly call her Eve, but tbh I kind of wish now I had done it the other way round and just used Evie as a nn.

sophieandbelly · 12/08/2010 18:30

the question wasnt shall i call her evie its shall i put that on the bc, so all of those who say dont do it whats the point!!

i have an evie (yes annoying that is got very popular) but she is and always will be the only evie to us. i like eve and others that sound like it, but i love the name evie so that is what is on bc.

go with what u love xx

LilMagill · 12/08/2010 16:12

Sorry to keep adding my two penn'orth, but going back to your point about not wanting her to go by a different name to what she is on paper, a few people have mentioned Evies going by Eve rather than vice versa, so even if you name her Evie it could still happen that she has Evie on all her documents but is widely known as Eve. So... I think she might as well have the more formal name as her 'default' on documents, especially for when she grows older. OK, I'll shut up now Grin

It is a twee name, far too twee for me. If you are stuck on Evie go for it but she will have lots of others in her class. She'll probably have some Eves/Evas/Avas as well.

Almost every baby girl born in the last 4 years in my town is called Evie.

AT1137 · 12/08/2010 09:31

It's a nice name but it is very very popular, Eve, Evie etc., nearly every new baby I know is called one of the other.

sunnydelight · 12/08/2010 05:34

My best friend here in Oz has a DD called Evie (full name). I love it.

teameric · 11/08/2010 20:54

I have an Evie, but I mostly call her Eve. I love the name obviously Smile

zenon · 11/08/2010 20:49

It is a lovely name but there are just sooo many Eve/Evie/Ava's that your lovely DD will be just one of several in her class/nursery.

There are so many other gorgeous names to choose from. Smile

londonkiwi · 11/08/2010 20:35

Not so worried about that Kerala1, we are in NZ and although variations of Eve are popular here (especially Eva it seems) it's not to the same extent as the UK.

LaundryLyne · 11/08/2010 15:08

I prefer Evie as a nickname, with something like Eve, Evelina, Evelyn or Genevieve as full name.

KERALA1 · 11/08/2010 13:41

Dont do it. One third of the girls in DD's class are named a variant of Eve the name is officially full.

LilMagill · 11/08/2010 13:01

*should have read "but I have plenty of friends who do use a nickname but prefer to ...etc."

LilMagill · 11/08/2010 13:01

I guess for me, FoghornLeghorn, it's not just about formality; I like to give a name that I feel has history and substance, and I personally feel that when you give a nickname, you're sort of only giving a part of the name. Maybe that's just because I'm interested in names. And of course there is no 'rule book' but in some situations a different level of formality is called for. I don't have a nickname but I have plenty of friends who prefer to use their full name professionally, e.g. a Charlie using Charles on business cards, dealings with the bank etc. Same as you might prefer to wear a suit to a job interview, or an evening dress to a posh reception.

Good night, LondonKiwi! Smile

FoghornLeghorn · 11/08/2010 12:48

Nooooo stick with Evie. Who says it needs to be formal - there's no rule book

londonkiwi · 11/08/2010 12:44

Yeah I do see what you mean too LilMagill, I guess that is my one worry about Evie, that it's too informal to be a 'proper' name. Will have a think about Eve, but am now off to bed (I am in New Zealand and it's nearly midnight!)

OP posts:
LilMagill · 11/08/2010 12:42

Haha ValiumSingleton, I agree about the cream cakes... just threw it out there because I've seen it suggested before to get to Evie. Smile

pointydog · 11/08/2010 12:42

I'd go for Eve as the registered name, known as Evie.

Nearly did it myself.

londonkiwi · 11/08/2010 12:41

I agree Valium re Evangeline and do take your point re creating options - will think about that one.

OP posts:
LilMagill · 11/08/2010 12:40

I see what you mean... I suppose to my ears Evie sounds so informal and familiar that I wasn't imagining it used exclusively; with the Eve I knew, friends and family would call her Evie a lot, but there was no question her proper name was Eve, and it never led to any confusion that I know of as the names are so obviously linked, e.g. an Emily being called Em, or a Thomas being called Tommy/Tom.

xkaylax · 11/08/2010 12:38

I love that name think its lovely :)

ValiumSingleton · 11/08/2010 12:37

It's very simple, to hand over options to the person you're naming.

Evangeline makes me feel like I just ate two cream cakes, and regretted at least one of them. Less is more.

PuppyMonkey · 11/08/2010 12:34

Well I don't get it when people are always advised on MN to give a full or "proper" name they don't like, rather than a so-called "nick-namey" one they do.

If you like Evie, call her Evie. Wassa-big-deal? She can call herself MoonUnitBigKnob when she gets older if she doesn't like Evie anyway. Grin
