Clementine and Tabitha are lovely - on my shortlist but sadly not DH's

mathanxiety · 09/08/2010 16:56

Tabitha -- Love, also love Dinah and Beulah
Jemima -- Love
Octavia (dh doesn't like) -- I'm with your DH here
Clementine -- Love
Lavinia -- Much prefer Letitia (Lettie). Lavinia reminds me of A Little Princess and can be shortened to Lav.
Lola -- Like Layla, Lilah or Lela, not Lola; too close to Lolita, a diminutive. L O L A Lo-la is a song that would echo in her ears and become annoying after a while.
Matilda -- Love
Amelie -- very meh
Lottie -- again, I prefer Letitia

So,
Tabitha
Jemima
Clementine
Matilda

with
Dinah
Beulah
Letitia
thrown in.

LetThereBeRock · 09/08/2010 15:47

I love Matilda and Lottie but not the others.
Tabitha and Clementine are very popular at the moment, judging by MN,but I hate them. Lavinia is awful too. Lola makes me think of a stripper.
The others aren't terrible but I don't really like them.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 09/08/2010 13:11

Good point, saucetastic.

I know a Venetia, it's a lovely name, very elegant.

saucetastic · 09/08/2010 13:01

They're all absolutely lovely, except Lavinia.

Awful connotations, as the most famous one met a grisly end in a Shakespeare play after a horrific ordeal with two men then having her tongue and hands cut out.
All of the other names are hard to choose between, they're beautiful.

suspiria · 09/08/2010 12:53

My favourites are Clementine,Jemima and Tabitha
How about Cosima,Venetia or Theodora

zenoushka · 09/08/2010 10:42

I love Amelie - really pretty!

As someone else mentioned, I think Lydia would go well with Imogen.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 09/08/2010 09:37

I know a couple of Tabithas and never heard anyone talk about the cat thing!

Other "jolly" names (i don't actually like them but ho hum):
Pandora
Elise
Clara
Allegra

I would love to compile some of the comments here into a baby name book:

Octavia - a lovely name, if rather Jilly Cooper, although critics claim that it sounds "severe" and - at worst - may be only fit for ostriches.

isitnearlywineoclock · 09/08/2010 08:27

Like Tabitha, agree it's a bit catty but it was on our long list.

Jemima - OK, know a lovely one whose is known as Mima

Octavia - yuk. Ostrich's name.

Clementine - nice, I'm one of the few who like it shortened to Clemmie

Lavinia - no

Lola - Madonna's daughter is shortened to this so no. Good song though...

Matilda - cute as Tillie but don't like Matilda.

Amelie - affected, unless you or DH are French.

Lottie - like this and Charlotte.

spiritmum · 09/08/2010 08:26

I know quite a few Lolas and Tilly/ Matildas (and also a dog called Tilly!)

I love Tabitha but you/she will get cat comments, at least from older people. Depends how much this matters to you.

I actually quite like Octavia but Amelie is probably the most user-friendly, IYSWIM.

CharlieBoo · 09/08/2010 08:12

I love Jemima best from your list. Don't like Amelie, Octavia (awful), Matilda.

I like Lola, is a bit popular and may date v quickly. Also like Lottie.

LoubyLoubyLouLa · 09/08/2010 07:40

Thanks for all you replies, not as harsh as I expected!

thumb ottilie was on my list but dh vetoed!
helenwonbat if I'm honest I think I'm trying for the 'jolly hockey stick' type names Blush

Keep them coming!

I really like Tabitha and Clemantine, they are very pretty. I also like their nn Tabby and Clemmy very cute but then they will always have the option of using their grown up name. BTW love the name Imogen x

Margeaux · 09/08/2010 06:54

Tabitha - not sure. It does make me think of cats.
Jemima - love it. Beautiful name - don't care about the duck thing.
Octavia - don't like.
Clemantine - Pretty.
Lavinia - Don't like.
Lola - Love but it's getting quite popular.
Matilda - Love.
Amelie - Pretty.
Lottie - Love. Like Charlotte also though.

anyabanya · 09/08/2010 06:52

Love Imogen. Mathilda was going to be our name if DS was a DD.

I love Jemima too

LongtimeinBrussels · 09/08/2010 06:46

I know it's not on your list but a friend of mine has twins - Imogen and Phoebe which I like together.

Out of your names, I like Clémentine and Amélie, most probably because they are names I hear sometimes over here (but are not too popular).

Kathleen123 · 09/08/2010 06:29

I like Cleventine, Lola, Lottie, Matilda (only if shortened to Tilly) and Amelie.

I dislike the other names.

nancydrewrocked · 09/08/2010 05:05

Amelie and Lola are very popular so wouldn't go for them.

Ireally like clemantine and octavia but wouldn't actually use them myself.

Don't like Lavinia.

Matilda is nice but again popular

I am a bit ambivialnt about Jemima and tabitha. Sorry!

God, even short threads and I didn't bother to read all the posts!Blush

So - if your DH is Aussie and there's any chance of you moving to Australia, DON'T do Matilda unless you want her to be one of many in her class.

A name I can't stand (sorry) but might fit with your list is Ottilie - that could still have nn Tilly.

proudfoot · 09/08/2010 04:22

Tabitha - Agree it's a cat's name. Okay but don't love it

Jemima - Jemima puddleduck and seems a bit jokey but again, okay. I like Jem as nickname

Octavia - Sounds quite strict

Clemantine - Shouldn't it be Clementine with an E?? Okay, I like it because of the film Eternal Sunshine but think it's trying a bit hard

Lavinia - Don't like it, reminds me of lavatory and sounds whiny!

Lola - Cute but seems to be getting very popular, also not sure if it can be taken seriously as an adult. What about Lila?

Matilta - Matilda? Nice but very popular if that bothers you.

Amelie - Very pretty and goes nicely with Imogen

Lottie (don't like Charlotte though) - I love Charlotte and think Lottie is a bit insubstantial on its own

I would pick Amélie or Matilda

thumbwitch · 09/08/2010 04:21

Tabitha - cats or witches but it's ok
Jemima - that raggy doll from Play School and ducks, not keen
Octavia (dh doesn't like) - bit "trying too hard" IMO.
Clemantine - do you mean Clementine? Not keen but like the nn Cleo
Lavinia - love this, oddly
Lola - not keen, despite CHarlie & Lola - still reminds me of the Showgirl and the Man-woman from the songs
Matilta (dh likes) - haven't heard of this unless you meant Matilda - which is sweet when nn Tilly (VERY common in Australia)
Amelie - nice
Lottie (don't like Charlotte though) - what about Carlotta if you don't like Charlotte? I don't really like nns as full names, but that's my issue, not yours.

:)

If you like the above, what about Lydia?

lucertola28 · 09/08/2010 03:51

Amelie is really sweet, that is my favourite of your list

Jemima also makes me think of ducks

Don't really like Clementine

Not fond of the others
