Honest opinions on this name for a girl please. I love it, but feel it does sound a bit 'harsh' for a baby, much better for an older child/woman. Or are my hormones getting the better of me??!!

Love it. Thinking of the beautiful and talented Astrid Ulverton (sp?) from Jane Beaton's excellent 'Rules'.

Jane Beaton has written modern day boarding school stories (for those that don't know).

Astrid is based upon Enid Blyton's Irene from the Mallory Towers series.

oh...totally totally love it, but am not allowed it. I have a similar name, and my DD-to-be something similarly Germanic/Scandinavian, but AStrid would have been my own choice!

zenoushka · 09/08/2010 19:45

i really like Astrid!

nevergoogle · 09/08/2010 19:40

thumbs up. good name.

mamasunshine · 09/08/2010 19:38

Ok, you're all making me really want to use Astrid now!! My mother will just have to keep quiet about not liking at! (as if!)

Love it. V cool.

frankenfanny · 09/08/2010 17:16

I know someone with a teenage Astrid. She is a very cool sporty girl. IKWYM about it not being the sweetest of baby names but it is one hell of a name to grow into!

MrsBadger · 08/08/2010 17:03

I like it - I actually quite like 'harsh' names (ie ones that don;t end in -ie or -a)
Miriam
Francis
Helen
Ruth

I think it's fine for a baby. Nice name.

CupcakesHay · 08/08/2010 13:00

Astrid's on my list too - but DH has said NO! I LOVE IT!

Chynah · 07/08/2010 23:50

I know a baby Astrid - think it's lovely.

hoolabombshell · 07/08/2010 22:57

I always loved this name for a baby girl, although heartbreakingly, DP has vetoed it along with my other favourite, Elettra. Grrr, what does he know Sad

But go for it mamasunshine, it sounds like a fabulous foreign film actress name!

mamasunshine · 07/08/2010 20:56

Oh, lots more replies, thanks Smile My dh loves it too, it was my mother and sister that hated it! But as I love it so much thought I would check with the mn jury first, before cancelling it out.

I don't really like it, it's kind of cool I guess but a bit harsh. Also reminds me of Astrid in 'The Accidental' by Ali Smith

Surprise · 07/08/2010 20:07

I love it, but know what you mean about it being a bit hard for baby. You may end up calling her Asti or something to soften it which may well stick for life!

LynetteScavo · 07/08/2010 20:06

I like it.

JaMmRocks · 07/08/2010 20:05

I like it, but it does sound a bit harsh. Thing is, you're bound to shorten it or use a nn while she's little and then she can grow into her name. I say go for it if you like it!

Bellepink · 07/08/2010 20:01

LOVE it! Timeless... plus cute on a little girl and cool on a grown girl

Also like Ariel and Athena Smile
