I LOVE it, and have done for around 20 years! It is top of my list if the baby I am expecting in January, is a boy. I have grown up twin sons named Thomas (Tom) and Jake and I regretted not calling one of them Gabriel.

Nancy66 · 08/08/2010 11:28

It's a great name.

We have one in the family. He's only ever called Gabriel - never shortened.

He's at school and never had any teasing about his name.

amistillsexy · 06/08/2010 22:39

I have a Gabriel, and we don't shorten it to Gabe, although some of the teaching assistants/dinner ladies at school have done.

It really bugs me that so many people insist on calling him 'Gabrielle', though. I always tell them 'it's Gabriel, like the angel', but they still do it, even people who should know better (like his new teacher who in 6 weeks has never spelt it the same way twice...)

I still think it's a lovely name though. I loved Raphael as well, but thought it might be hard to carry off, so ended up with more 'chummy' names for my other 2 boys.

Wholelottalove · 06/08/2010 22:01

I love it too! I want it for DC2 if boy... DH is vetoing currently, but I have another 19 weeks to change his mind. Never occurred to me it could be shortened to Gay - I assumed Gabe.

Lily311 · 06/08/2010 21:23

My brother is a Gabriel, we call him Gabe, Gabri, or Gaborek :o

DinahRod · 06/08/2010 21:13

It's one of my dc's middle names; my other dcs have some heavyweight biblical names as first names so no. 1 archangel as a middle name evens out his lack of, iyswim - plus I love it!

Dh went off it as a first name as he thought it too pretty/wasn't struck by Gay or Gabe as a nn.

Amberc · 06/08/2010 21:11

My sister's baby is called Gabriel and it's lovely - they'll call him Gabe for short - not Gay!!

Alicious · 06/08/2010 21:01

I love it too! I have put it on my list for DS2. Love Raphael/Rafael too, two angelic names!

Binkster · 05/08/2010 23:42

I love it. It would be top of my list if my cousin didn't already have one! My DH loves it too. The little Gabriel that I know suits his name so well and is known as Gabe. Such a fab name!

Saucepanman · 05/08/2010 23:37

I have a 10 week old Gabriel . DH suggested it when I was 10wk pg and we never discussed another boy's name. We all (me, dh, ds1, dd) call him Gabe, Gabes and the Gabester FIL did blurt out the other day, when SIL was asking me how we came up with the name "He will get called Gabby at school" so I am guessing he doesn't like it! Couldn't give a toss tbh, we love it. Same as ohfuschia- we knew it was "The One". Loads of people pronouncing it Gabrielle here too

ohfuschia · 05/08/2010 23:28

I have a Gabriel, and while I have been surprised by the number of people who have pronounced it Gabrielle, I have absolutely no regrets, it is a beautiful name and I can't imagine him being anything else.

I have a name that is constantly mispronounced (Irish) and it is not that big a deal to me. Also I have had loads of really positive responses to it, many more than I was expecting actually, as I accept that we all have different taste when it comes to names. I considered the name carefully of course, and though DP was hesitant at first he now completely agrees that it is a fantastic name and he can't imagine DS having another. I had a passion for the name, nothing else seemed to have the same impact on me, and I hope that's a good enough explanation for DS when he's older.

I am glad it is becoming more popular, the more the merrier!

meadowlarks · 05/08/2010 22:48

I have a cousin called Gabriel and as far as I know he's never been picked on or called "gay" before. I don't think you should let that put you off. Gabe is a nice nickname.

usualsuspect · 05/08/2010 22:20

I love it

Petitefrizz · 05/08/2010 22:19

Very nice name! Only I'm not too sure about Gabe, or gay, or Gaby for nicknames....

DastardlyandSmugly · 05/08/2010 22:15

Love it.

sedgiebaby · 05/08/2010 22:02

Love it

LaundryLyne · 05/08/2010 21:59

I like it

chaya5738 · 05/08/2010 21:39

Our next child will be Gabriel if he is a boy. I love it. Gabe for short. We also know a few other Gabriels and none have been teased or called "Gay."

thisisyesterday · 05/08/2010 19:50

it's a fantastic name!

ds2 is Gabriel Edward

MrsJT · 05/08/2010 19:46

My brother is called Gabriel and we call him Gabe for short

Beattiebow · 05/08/2010 19:13

it is the Gay abbreviation that puts the dhs off I think. But ds1 was at school with a Gabriel and the children were fine. This was at primary school though. I used Gabriel on ds2 for a couple of days when he was born, but dh was having none of it.

hairymelons · 05/08/2010 19:07

That was for my post, not yours ASLD!

tattycoram · 05/08/2010 19:06

I love it and DH won't have it. There's a theme here isn't there

hairymelons · 05/08/2010 19:06
Hmm
ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 05/08/2010 19:06

love it, was no.1 for DS3 for a while but I knew temp. teachers etc. would call out Gabrielle
