Hi all very new to mumsnet.
Just had my second son.Dp is half Italian so he wanted various names(Rocco,Marco,Silvio).
I want Danny for our beautiful son.He says he'll only consider if I accept Daniel.
Hate Daniel but love Danny. Is it okay to christen your son a nn?

Sod it, go with Danny if that's what you will call him. Danny not Daniel was the name we'd chosen if our 5 week old had been a boy. Mind you, we called her Lily so there are lots of people on here that would think we are common!

SirBoobAlot · 10/08/2010 17:16

I know people who have had problems getting interviews / haven't been taken seriously because they have nicknames as their formal name, eg, Tommy / Danny / Charlie.

So purely for that reason alone, I would always go with a full name on a birth certificate. Thing is, even if you called him Danny, he may decide when he's old that actually he prefers Dan, and the name you want might not be used by him anyway! So you might as well give him the option, register him as Daniel, and call him Danny at home.

DS2 is Daniel and is known by everyone as Danny - it suits him down to the ground.

I agree with the group sentiment. Danny is great for a NN but I would officially go with Daniel.

mumtoabeautifulbabyboy · 07/08/2010 22:44

Also agree with your DH, Daniel is a gorgeous name and gives your LO far more options. Danny is ok.
Love Dante.

Shabbychiclover · 07/08/2010 22:13

Thanks math.Love Dan/Dann.Smile

You could call him Dan or Dann, after one of the 12 Tribes of Israel?

Otherwise, I agree with your DH about an official name of Daniel and a nn Danny. You don't know what walk of life he may end up in and a more formal official name might be very useful.

I'd probably naturally say Dan-tay, but either is nice (and Darn-tay probably closer to the original).

Shabbychiclover · 06/08/2010 13:30

Professorgoing to mention Dante to Dp.
Do you pronounce it Darn-tay or Dan-tay?
ThanksSmile

Would your DP go for Dante with a nn Danny, as Lulabella suggested? That's more Italian, so he might like it. Or Danilo (Italian version of Daniel) with a nn Danny?

Shabbychiclover · 06/08/2010 13:12

I agree with you housewife. It seems more professional for him growing up.
The only thing that would bother me is Dp's family would call him Daniel whether I liked it or not(I know this already).
Also teachers may call him Daniel at school etc..
I can imagine it being a headache repeating myself saying 'It's Danny not Daniel' all the time.Confused

Lulabella-Dante is lovelySmile

I don't think it'a a good idea either to call a child just Archie/Alfie/Charlie/Tom etc. Far better to give them the official name and then let them be known by the shortened name. What if the child grows up to be a high court judge? Far better for a 50 year old judge or senior consultant to have the option of being called Charles rather than Charlie.

Shabbychiclover · 06/08/2010 12:23

Jellybeansthat's a good point.Seems like Archie/Alfie/Charlie/Tom etc can get away with being names in their own right but Danny doesn't get away with it.

Thanks for comments everyoneSmile

Its ok to use a nickname but I think it would be better to use Daniel, it will give him more options as an adult. You can all call him Danny but I personally think it sounds a bit sloppy as an 'official' name. Love the name Daniel.

jellybeans · 05/08/2010 20:41

I like it on it's own. It's abit like Alfie and Archie etc so he won't be the only one with a nn on the cert, will probably be most kids looking at the birth name stats (Freddie/Charlie etc). I know someone who just used Danny on the cert and it's fine. Use what you would use in everyday life. i have a nn and a 'proper' one on cert and wish i just had one real name..Still, whatever you do it's no big deal really.

LaundryLyne · 05/08/2010 18:28

I like Daniel, and Danny is OK as a nickname.

rubbersoul · 05/08/2010 18:27

My hubby is a Danny He was christened Daniel, his parents and some people call him Dan (which he hates). He 'feels' like a Danny if that makes sense but by being named Daniel he has choices, IYSWIM.

By the way I love Danny spelt as Dhani, like George Harrison's son

ValiumSingleton · 05/08/2010 18:18

I don't know. Danny is cuter perhaps. But I prefer that Daniel can be Daniel OR Danny, so imo, Daniel is always going to trump Danny for that reason. jmo

Shabbychiclover · 05/08/2010 18:09

Thanks for feedback
Dp said putting Daniel on bc would give him the choice but surely Danny is a nice enough name in it's own right?
He said if I don't accept Daniel then he'll call him Rocco...
Danny surely sounds nicer than Daniel?
