Romilly- do you know of any?

I'm not pregnant at the moment but am considering trying for another one. I have always liked the name Romilly for a girl. I was wondering how popular it is at the moment as I prefer to use an unusual name.

Would you mind letting me know if you know any little Romillys and which area of the country you live in?

Many thanks

Oh - and I forgot that I'd posted and our Romilly is listed. Too me by surprise (and made me all emotional!!)

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 28/10/2010 18:24

Here's the Wikipedia entry for Romilly

and here's the webiste I mentioned

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 28/10/2010 18:18

I've never actually met a boy called Romilly. How old is your friend's brother? When I was expecting my DD, I found a website run by a man (named Romilly) and basically it welcomed Romillys - you were encouraged to post anyting interesting about the origins of the name, and post if you'd had a baby and named him or her Romilly. Was quite sweet. Will see if I can find it...

greedyguts · 28/10/2010 17:56

I love the name for a girl, but my friends brother is called it so it's out for us.

annabell28 · 28/10/2010 17:32

A really lovely, unusual, but not whacky, name.

florencerusty · 27/10/2010 22:47

I know 1 - she's about 3 in Gloucestershire

washngo · 27/10/2010 22:46

This was our second choice-I still love it and feel a bit sad that we'll probably never use it now...dd is called camilla and don't want to end up with scenario of friends phoning up asking for milly "which milly?" etc. But I love it. It is gorgeous.

Yellowflowers · 27/10/2010 14:08

I know one - is lovely name

Bue · 27/10/2010 13:49

Love this name. Also like nn Romy as sunface mentioned.

I'm having such fun with the new 2009 baby name statistics that I've done some research for you Grin There were 33 Romillys born in England and Wales last year, making it the 982nd most popular girl's name!

sunface · 27/10/2010 12:56

Yup my DD2 has Romilly as her middle name! it's a beautiful name and can be shortened to Romy (pronounced roamy)

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 27/10/2010 12:52

Just looked on the ONS website published today (I think) and in the list of names, Romilly was 982nd and only 33 babies were given this name in 2009.

So not too many about.

passthechocs · 27/10/2010 11:25

If you like it, go for it. I think there will always be comments on the more unusual names, but then who wants to be one of many with the same name at school?

We did have a book called 'what not to name your baby' when pregnant with our first - the type of names to avoid were Adolf (like I would Confused) and those that had unfortunate initials or had 'playground rude' nicknames. Unless Romilly would give an interesting set of initials with your chosen middle name/surname, then why not use it? I like it.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 27/10/2010 10:32

I don't think you get much reference to that in the South pasthechocs but our Romilly was very nearly born in Sheffield and we got lot of comments abou the town in Greater Manchester...

But the derivation does come from a place name, from Romilly-Sur-Seine in France and then it was used as a surname, then a boys' name (and still is) but more commonly used for girls now.

Can you tell I've had to explain our name choice a lot? :)

passthechocs · 27/10/2010 10:29

Never heard of it as a girls name - but I used to live near a place called Romiley, a town/village near Stockport.

witcheseve · 27/10/2010 10:26

Romilly Weeks, news reporter. Also know one and she is 16.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 27/10/2010 10:24

runningrach Yes - she has a Gaia Romilly.

and bundlebelly I guess that happens - if you like a certain type of name you're likely to like others like it. That made sense in my head, not sure it does now I've written it down!

I'm not sure we've got any nns for Romilly - apart from Romilly Poppet (which is what I wanted her mn to be but wasn't allowed) but we've gone to town with her sister for some reason - she's Fancy Pants or The Fondant Fancy (she's called Nancy!!) Joe doesn't have too many that aren't really obvious either. I think that's something for me to work on!

MissHavishamsDress · 27/10/2010 10:23

nope

Celia76 · 27/10/2010 10:15

Live in SW London and don't know any Romillys. Pretty name!

runningrach · 27/10/2010 09:38

It's on my list, although DH doesn't like it. IS it Emma Thompson's little girl's middle name? (not that that matters, anyway I like her!)

bundlebelly · 27/10/2010 09:34

thereisalight we like all the same names! Do your kids have funny nickames too? Mine are Munkum (evolved from Monkey), and Deagol.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 27/10/2010 09:13

And I also know of 3, one in her 30s, one about 11 and one about 3.
