People are sniggering at my newborns name

Ds2 is only 2 weeks old and we finally agreed on a name for him which is Rocco.
So far everyone in RL has said it's awful.
Alot of older people have said it's aggressive and sounds like a boxer.
My mother said that people have told her that I've chosen a dreadful name and that Rocco is a well-known famous porn star.
Yesterday I googled 'Rocco' and the first thing that came up was the adult star.
DH met a few friends for drinks last week and they laughed when he told them the name and said they didn't realise we were into porn!
Dh came home saying he now feels like an idiot telling people our sons name as he had heard of this famous pornstar.
Now I am at wits ends.
My mother said people think I'm copying Madonna too(I'm not and not a fan of Madonna either).
I hate that the name is connected to a pornstar.Dh wants to change his name to Samson or Emerson.
I think Emerson goes well with ds1 who is Ellis but don't know what to do!Also like the name Asher.
Just sick of changing our minds so much.
Thought Rocco was a lovely name untill now
Anyway thanks for reading mn's

Rocco is a lovely name. I'd be tempted to give the rude person who mentions porn in relation to my baby's name a long hard stare and ask them coolly if they are really suggesting I have just named my new son after a porn star. And keep staring until they back down and never mention it again.

Patsy99 · 29/07/2010 10:30

I suggested Rowan or Robert as alternatives to Rocco when you asked before on the other thread. They both go well with Ellis.

If you don't feel confident with Rocco then you should change it, it's how you feel about the name that matters.

FWIW I don't like Samson and think that would attract negative comments too (although all rude obviously).

diddl · 29/07/2010 09:00

I don´t think Rocco or Emerson go with Ellis.

Asher OK with it though (imo)

CreepyFunbags · 28/07/2010 22:28

Ellis and Rocco go well together. I hadn't heard of the porn chap, most people won't have i'm sure!
Keep the name!
If you do change it, don't pick Emerson, because of the aforementioned post - same initial issue.

CheerfulYank · 28/07/2010 18:19

Rocco's great, so you tell them to eff right off! And I don't know anything about a porn star named that, so...

And Rocco's a real name, unlike, you know Taydon or something. (And yes I do know of a Taydon!)

I like Rocco, keep it!

rockinhippy · 28/07/2010 18:12

I used to know a guy by that name......seriously good looking & uber cool... & of Italian descent

its a macho name that you don't forget easily, so can no doubt only serve him well in life.........so I'd keep him as Rocco, ignore the sniggerers as just been plain ignorant & without any taste or style

takethatlady · 28/07/2010 17:59

What sophieandbelly said. Tell them all to piss off or you'll set Rocco on them as soon as he's old enough!

tammy234 · 28/07/2010 17:48

"If you go for a brave name, such as Rocco, its always going to be a case of love it or hate it. Its the same with Samson, Emerson, and Beau.

If you dont want this then you have to play safe with names like - Tom, Richard, Edward, Mark, Nicholas, Alexander, Ian, Gareth, John, Daniel, Mark, Adam, Robin etc."

Not sure I agree. I for example, hate the names Richard, Robin, Mark and in particular Gareth.

mathanxiety · 28/07/2010 17:33

I really like Rocco -- I know an old Italian grandfather by the name, and his great grandson, born two days ago; it suits both.

As someone suggested -- keep Rocco and change your rude, porn-watching 'friends', and your mum and family will come around when little Rocco starts developing his own personality, smiling, charming everyone.

Rocco was originally French but famous in Italy for curing the plague-ridden.

If you name your baby something else, what guarantee do you have that the next hot thing in the porn industry won't have that exact same name either? I knew a lot of Lindas in school who didn't suffer because of that name's association with the very famous 'Linda Lovelace' -- Linda has its own drawbacks entirely separate from the porn association, imo, but that association wouldn't immediately spring to mind.

LilyBolero · 28/07/2010 15:55

I personally wouldn't have gone with Rocco, it sounds to me like a mafia gangster name! I wouldn't change it just because of people's reactions, but the way your dh is feeling is something to consider - iirc he wasn't totally struck on Rocco to begin with? And it isn't good to have him embarrassed by his son's name.

If I were you I would find a name you both like as his given name and give Rocco (if you love it) as a middle name).

I still think Xander (short for Alexander) is lovely. I would avoid having two ds with the same initial, to avoid confusion with the post! I prefer Asher to Samson.

Other names that seem to go with Ellis to my ears (again, not necessarily my favourite names, just ones that go)...

Dexter
Barnaby
Kyle
Archibald (Archie for short)
Nathan
Jude
Saul
Theo

Emerson has a Soft Porn association.
Samson implies you're religious and he'll spend his life telling people he's not a Samuel.
Rocco is fine, methinks, just tough it out until people are used to it.

Kathleen123 · 28/07/2010 15:45

If you go for a brave name, such as Rocco, its always going to be a case of love it or hate it. Its the same with Samson, Emerson, and Beau.

Good luck.

tammy234 · 28/07/2010 15:42

There is a little Rocco in my ds's class (aged 6) and no one has ever said anything negative about his name, in fact most of us really like it. We are in Surrey and seem to be surrounded by lots of lovely less common names.

I honestly think Ellis and Rocco sound lovely together.

Kathleen123 · 28/07/2010 15:38

What about Samson.

Palace39 · 28/07/2010 15:22

Rocco is indeed an Italian name, and a nice one at that. However, i have heard of the porn star Rocco and would never consider it myself, for exactly that reason. On the same subject though, many people live quite happily with the name 'Debbie'...

If you like it, keep it, he's your son not your friends. And as friends, even if they think it's a poor choice, they should keep it to themselves frankly!

taffetacatski · 28/07/2010 15:16

Agree with eglu

I always think of Rocco Forte the hotel magnate

Don't say we didn't tell you!

Asher is lovely.

I don't like Rocco, Samson or the other one but if you were my rl friend I'd never tell you that. Your friends and family are very rude.

foxytocin · 28/07/2010 15:01

I like Asher over Emerson which sounds twee next to Ellis imo.

I don't know Rocco was a pornstar though I knew Madonna had a son of that name but have never been fond of it.

Are you considering an official name change? it is easy to do.

Flighttattendant · 28/07/2010 14:55

Oh what a shame about the porn conenction

I never knew that either fwiw.

What about Rollo? As in Rollo Weeks - brother of Honeysuckle Weeks. He's a well known child actor - or was, prob a hulking great bloke by now!

freerangeeggs · 28/07/2010 14:52

I actually think Rocco is a very nice name and had never heard of Rocco Siffredi.

However, I think this thread demonstrates the most difficult thing about naming babies - we all want something different, but not too different, and what 'different' means varies across the country.

For example, I'm sure there are plenty of little Roccos running round North London who don't even get raised eyebrows, but in Glasgow, say, on hearing little Rocco's name people's reactions would be a mixture of , and .

I don't know where you are but they clearly aren't ready for a little Rocco!

I suppose it depends on whether you and your DH (and your son, who of course has no say in the matter) can handle the comments and funny looks. When your son is older, people might not say these things to his face, but they'll say it behind his back if that's what they're thinking and that can be quite a burden to bear.

Of course your son might be the first of many Roccos and in five or ten years it might not seem nearly so 'out there', even to the people in your area. That's quite a risk though.

None of this detracts from the fact that the people around you are being shockingly rude.

Asher and Samson are lovely and much less 'out there'-sounding.

Firawla · 28/07/2010 13:36

i think rocco is cute
surely not everyone knows this porn star, i never heard of it only thought of madonna
people are so rude to make these comments

Rockbird · 28/07/2010 10:11

I did mean to say though, there is no excuse for sniggering at a baby's name in RL, that is the height of rudeness and whatever I may say here, I would never say anything other than 'lovely name' if I met you in the street.

sophieandbelly · 28/07/2010 08:06

i think its awful that people make such comments when u have named the little one, not as tho u said we r thinking of alling him this, u have atcually named him,
i say sod all those rude bas*ards and keep the name u love and if anyone says anymore say pls dont be rude about my childs name!!

i think u would look as tho u had been bullied into changing your sons name.

p.s my sister had a little boy 3 months ago and when i tell people what he is called havnt had one positive comment! in answer i just say well that is y she doesnt tell people until shes had the baby as other peoples opinions dont bother her. (i dnt like his name, but not my choice!!)

gillybean2 · 28/07/2010 07:44

I googled it too. Only one reference via wiki about the porm star, and lots of others to non porn people.
Perhaps that's because I have child protection settings on my computer though...
