I always thought it it a bit odd that Nigella was called Nigella and her sisters were Thomasina and Horatia.

To me that really does look like they were expecting/hoping for a son and if not actually disappointed in having a girl it does seem a case of making the chosen name fit, boy or not.

Thomasina is just such an unattractive name.

othersideofchannel · 04/07/2013 11:05

I think Thomasina is a lovely, feminine underused name. Great choice imo. Lots of nickname potential - Ina, Tina, Tommy, Sinny etc.

ByHecuba · 02/07/2013 21:44

I like it. Thomasin was a popular C16 name and would have been pronounced Tamsin, like Agnes was often pronounced Annis etc. Thomasina over Tamsin though, as Outhwaite and Eastenders springs to mind first.
Don't know if you'd entertain it, but a little girl with nn Tommy would be ridiculously cute imoSmile

littlepeas · 02/07/2013 20:06

I have a feminised man's name that is doing the rounds a bit at the moment and i like it a lot, although I do feel I have grown into it and it doesn't suit a child. I like Thomasina - I think it is elegant.

thegreylady · 02/07/2013 19:51

I have a cousin named Davidina! She soon adopted her mn which was Ann!

Rhubarbgarden · 02/07/2013 19:28

I think it's lovely.

NowPlayingZone · 02/07/2013 19:12

Never thought of it before, but actually quite like it. Prefer with the 'h'.

mathanxiety · 02/07/2013 19:10

I love it. I also love Wilhelmina, Paulina, Paulette, Frederika, Phillippa, Josephine/Josefina.

Perversely, I hate Roberta and Erica.

jalapeno · 02/07/2013 18:46

Love it. Also love Paula and Phillipa!

Maud2011 · 02/07/2013 18:11

Lots of feminine versions of boys' names work well but I find Thomasina a bit clumsy. Tamsin is much prettier.

Mumblyboo · 02/07/2013 17:40

Totally loving this name. Missy as a shortening.

littleoldme · 29/07/2010 17:56

I think it's fab.I also love Erica.

Jocobina makes me chortle as we had a rabbit called Jacob, after further investigation we settled on Jacobetta.

GormlessHeart · 29/07/2010 17:53

I went to school with a Jacobina which I have yet to come across again. Along with the usual Georginas, Harriets, Philippas etc. TBH I am not such a fan of Thomasina... just sounds a bit awkward somehow.

LexieKJ · 29/07/2010 17:51

Sorry, but I really don't like either.

sonniebonnie · 29/07/2010 13:30

I don't get the "actually we wanted a boy" point....

....because loads of girls names have a male equivalent.

E.g.
Phillipa/Phillip
Thea/Theo
Julia/Julian
Josephine/Joseph
Charlotte/Charles
Nigella/Nigel

and I don't think Thomasina is any different. If parents name their child Thomas, then yes, you'd think they' have wanted a boy .

Doozie · 29/07/2010 12:50

Love it!

I went to an all girls school and there were sisters Thomasina, Wilhelmina, Phillipa, Josephina, and another sister with a similar name that I can't remember.

They were quite well known as there were so many of them and because of their names. All gorgeous out going girls and a few of them ended up doing medicine like their Dad.

Do you think the parents wanted a boy?!

I considered Frederique for my DD.

GladioliBuckets · 27/07/2010 22:07

Love it.

SweetApril · 27/07/2010 21:21

I was nearly a Thomasina but it was vetoed by the midwife! I really like it and would be very happy to be a Thomasina now. It would probably have been a nightmare for mickey-taking in school but then I'm from an era where unusual names were not the fashion at all.

cece · 27/07/2010 15:29

I know a 6 year old Thomasina. It has grown on me and now I quite like it. It suits her very well.

iloveasylumseekers · 27/07/2010 15:27

I love it.

scarlettstar · 27/07/2010 10:08

my ex bf's mother had a cat called thomas that they later found out was a girl, was nicknamed thomasina for the rest of its life. cant dis-associate with that unfortunately!

CharlieBoo · 27/07/2010 07:15

It's awful sorry.

saltnvinigarcrips · 26/07/2010 22:56

Isn't that the name of the Cat in the Walt Disney film. I quite like it - definitely too nice a name for a cat.

Colliecross · 26/07/2010 21:05

Like Tommie as a nn, but Thomasina is a very large cat.

tummytickler · 26/07/2010 20:39

I really love it - I love Ernestine, Albertine, Augusta and Roberta too (and do not like the boys version)
I don't like Thomas, but really love Thomasina - sounds really elegant to me, and i really like Tommie as a nn.
