We have an appointment to register our daughters birth at 3pm.
Still can't decide on a name.

Trouble is, you just can't MAKE yourself like a name if you don't.

So far have:
Sophie Elizabeth
Emily Grace
Katie Elizabeth
but I don't LOVE any of them.

There are plenty of other names I like, but DH doesn't.

Daughter is just over 3wks old and DH and I just can't seem to agree on anything.

I sat crying about it last night as I know I'll just give in and agree to something I don't really like which makes me so sad.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
CaptainNancy · 20/07/2010 13:52

You can register 'baby' and change it up to aged 12 months, so don't panic!

Cecily Margot is my contribution.
Congratulations on her birth

Funkycherry · 20/07/2010 13:49

I know hormones are playing a part, but seriously, I can't believe how pathetic I'm being.
Crying and sat here dreading him coming home to take me to appointment.

I'll feel awful if I make him cancel as
1> he's taken the afternoon off work so we can do it.
2> I'm sick of people asking us (esp' in-laws who seem to think we need help and come up with daft suggestions
3> Really not sure more time would help.

Agree - cancel the appointment! You've got three more weeks.

Try calling her by one of the names you have on your list for a day. See how you feel. We did that with DS2. Then I decided I didn't want that name and we were back to square one.

In the end DH printed out the top 100 names for the last 5 years. He asked me to pick a number between 1 and 100. Then he read me the name at that number of popularity for the five years. For four of them the name was one of the other ones we had been discussing. We took it as a sign. Job done.

My other advice is to try one of the following arguments (friends have used these):

  • I went through the agony of giving birth so I get to have the final say although your views will be taken into account and ignored
  • I have the final say over girls' names and you have the final say over boys' names although your views will be taken into account and ignored
FakePlasticTrees · 20/07/2010 13:43

Delay the appointment. Please. you and your DH will regret this if you're not happy.

Also, can you talk to your DH about different nicknames/long versions of the names you love?

does he like Jess? Or Lilith? Meg? etc. that way you might find there's a name he'd be more prepared to call her and you can get the long version of what ever it is registered. (actually, there are loads of names that Lily can be the nick name for, would you compromise on one of those and you can always call her Lily)

belleymum · 20/07/2010 13:40

Cancel the appt and make one just before the 6 week deadline.

We didn't decide up until last minute (the night before and in the car on the way for DDs middle name)and DH suddenly decided he'd liked one that he'd ignored all along.

You can always change a name within the first year (i think) but it would be a shame and slightly weird.

valiumSingleton · 20/07/2010 13:40

I like Freya and Megan from your list.

Is it that he likes conservative names?

WOuld he agree to Margaret with nn Megan?

Libby is actually similar to LIly.

Could you call her Elizabeth/Libby? (I love that by the way).

StealthPolarBear · 20/07/2010 13:36

Ava
I love Lily too - maybe a variant of it would be OK to him...hmm...thinking

You do like popular but traditional names. Try the top 100 to see if you can find something you both love.

SqueezyB · 20/07/2010 13:33

crossed posts - will he not agree to Elizabeth then?

valiumSingleton · 20/07/2010 13:33

Funkycherry, just read your post properly and this is exactly what happened to me. My x had very conservative taste and Elizabeth was one of his four names. The name was a compromise name.

I'd hold out. Tell us the names you love. Tell him that in the same way he has rejected the names you love, you are rejecting this list. You have another three weeks, and then you can extend again I think. NOTHING happens if you're a bit late registering! they won't slap you!!

Dont be pushed into a compromise name.

I wish I'd been more assertive.

Surprise · 20/07/2010 13:33

what are your husband's favourites? Can you draw straws for who chooses the first name and who chooses the middle name?

OgreRebel · 20/07/2010 13:32

Cancel the appointment.

Have you looked on here at some of the girls' names threads?

Do you like Katharine if you like Katie?

SqueezyB · 20/07/2010 13:31

I agree, cancel the appointment, you still have 3 more weeks to decide!

How about Elizabeth as a first name, seeing as you've used it twice as a MN you clearly like it. It has lots of NN variations. Other suggestions based on the ones you already like:

Sophia
Eliza
Josie
Imogen
Tess
Amelia
Emma
Katherine
Charlotte
Martha
Rosie
Rosa

But I agree that in time your daughter will just become her name, and you won't be able to imagine anything else for her.

skidoodly · 20/07/2010 13:31

Also agree on not worrying too much about the middle name, it doesn't matter. Think about what name you want your daughter to be called.

Funkycherry · 20/07/2010 13:30

And I like Elizabeth as a first name (but I would call her Beth or Libby!!)

OP posts:
skidoodly · 20/07/2010 13:30

Niamh
Edel
Isobel
Jodi

Any of those work?

valiumSingleton · 20/07/2010 13:30

Sophie Elizabeth
Emily Grace
Katie Elizabeth

My favourite is Emily Grace, popular though it may be it's my favourite of your options.

I would really like Elizabeth Sophie or Elizabeth Grace with Eliza for short.

deepdarkwood · 20/07/2010 13:29

We used Catalina's approach too, btw - we had 'veto' of names we really hated on each others lists, and then discussed the others.

Btw, I know a good few people who haven't named their kids until around the 6 week mark - I know relatives tend to get a bit pushy, but there's really no reason to rush...

deepdarkwood · 20/07/2010 13:27

If it's upsetting you this much, you need to delay the appt. Give yourselves a couple of days when you don't talk a about it. Then think of a new approach.

But be aware that you may need to compromise a bit - if you can't find a name you both love, that's just what will have to happen.

DH named dd. I had another name in mind - but he was adamant it didn't fit her. I allowed myself to be overruled (although I did like the name he'd chosen very much, it wasn't my first choice) ... and he was quite right - 4 years on, I don't think the name would have suited dd - and in fact, don't even really like it.

wildwind · 20/07/2010 13:26

Niamh Isla - hope you like

CapitalText · 20/07/2010 13:25

Catherine May
Isabella Grace
Clara Elizabeth
Jessica Megan
Louisa Jane
Jennifer Grace
Katie Victoria
Grace Elizabeth
Abigail Sophia
Natalie Rebecca

Funkycherry · 20/07/2010 13:25

I like (but he doesn't):

Freya
Jessica
Lily
Megan

Starting to cry again.
HOW can this be so hard

OP posts:
Catilla · 20/07/2010 13:24

I agree don't pressurise yourself with a false deadline.

A suggestion:
Since most of us don't actually use our middle names, try thinking of your daughter as a person at different stages of her life, think of calling her name across the playground, etc. Just the first name.

That might help you find a few that you do really like more than others.

We also did the each-write-a-list think and had no overlap! If you have no overlap, then look at the other's list and cross out those you couldn't bear. If neither of you likes each others' choices at all then you have to dig a little further down your preference list. We actually ended up with a name that was on my DH's list and I hadn't even considered.

On the other hand after a few months your baby will just be the person you have named her and that will be that! There's no-one else in life whose name you get to choose - we are very used to just accepting people for who they are.

Good luck!

FakePlasticTrees · 20/07/2010 13:22

what name do you love for her?
