We have an appointment to register our daughters birth at 3pm.
Still can't decide on a name.

Trouble is, you just can't MAKE yourself like a name if you don't.

So far have:
Sophie Elizabeth
Emily Grace
Katie Elizabeth
but I don't LOVE any of them.

There are plenty of other names I like, but DH doesn't.

Daughter is just over 3wks old and DH and I just can't seem to agree on anything.

I sat crying about it last night as I know I'll just give in and agree to something I don't really like which makes me so sad.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Evamarie · 21/07/2010 08:51

Just something simple like Rae or Kim would be good.

I also think it best to cancel the appointment.

If you go ahead and really wish you had picked another name, you can as it is possible to change the first christian name/s within one year of registering. You would then be issued with a new birth certificate with the new name on. The long b.cert would still show the original name but with new name at the bottom. The short b.cert would show just the new name.

Hope this helps

Aw, Funkycherry. Three weeks is a hard time all round, I think. Try and get some sleep (ha), be nice to yourself, don't think about it for a few days and come back to the problem later.

For what it's worth, you and your partner don't have totally incompatible taste, you both like the same sorts of names, all is not lost.

Skidoodly - Edel? Really?

SqueezyB · 21/07/2010 08:11

Aw, sounds like you did the right thing, yes probably one of those days when the lack of sleep etc really starts getting to you!

Hope you feel better and make a decision soon. Don't stress about it too much! x

Funkycherry · 20/07/2010 21:39

Sorry I went quiet on you all.

DP came home, saw the state of me and cancelled the appointment.
Felt like a bit of a zombie all afternoon, so maybe it was just one of those new mum days.
Going to try and get my head around it again tomorrow.

Thanks for the support.x.

How are you getting on, Funkycherry?

LuluF · 20/07/2010 16:47

Maybe a decision has already been made one way or another?

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 20/07/2010 16:45

Elizabeth Anne

DinahRod · 20/07/2010 16:42

Have just been to register dc3's birth today, this time with certainty.

I'm another mum with naming regrets regarding dc2 so I urge you to cancel the appt, sitting on it for a while longer is time well spent.

Fortunately dh loves dc2's name enough for both of us, whilst I will never adore it, it is hers now. She does have a fuller version of the name which occasionally I try out and think gradually I shall increase its usage. My firm favourites for some years now has been Charlotte/Lottie.

Fwiw, Freya and Lily are very pretty, imo. Like the other posters I am also very drawn to one of your mn choices, Elizabeth, which has some lovely nn like Libby, Beth and Eliza.

Beth or Bethany are my current faves.

getawiggleon · 20/07/2010 15:18

Cancel the appointment and give yourself some time. Your hormones will still be all over the place and this is an important decision so don't be hard on yourself.

I had the same thing with DD - felt under pressure to announce a name along with the birth and then agonised over choice right up until registering and even after that I still kept trying different names on her for the first 12 months. I'm still not entirely sure about it even now if I'm perfectly honest (which is probably why I am always lurking on here!)

FWIW Elizabeth is a lovely name and with so many potential nicknames she would almost certainly suit one or could change as she grew older. Or what about Anna? Pretty, strong and timeless.

Good luck!

hormonalmum · 20/07/2010 14:45

pls cancel your appointment and make another. I did exactly this as could not decide on name for dd2. I always post on name regret threads as my ds has a name which I have never loved and I regret this. therefore there was no way I was allowing dd2 to have a name I didn't love.
In the end I struggled with her middle name and wrote both names on a piece of paper. I loved both names for different reasons and the one I pulled out of the "hat" was not the one I wanted iykwim.
Am really happy with her names.

my mil was texting and ringing every day for dd2 middle name. I either ignored her or told her we had not deciced (which we hadn't) in the end, dh told her to back off as I was getting cross with her.

Incidentally, am changing ds middle name by deed poll to alleviate my feelings towards his name.

So after that epic post, I would just take your time. Am sure you have looked in books, but what about meanings, or family connections etc.

good luck!!

undercovamutha · 20/07/2010 14:20

I think all the names you suggest are beautiful (and I am very picky!). I know it is a serious decision, but the bigger you make it, the more the chance that you will never agree.

Any little girl would be fine with any of those lovely names - god compared to some of the names you hear on here!!!!! If it was me I would go with the Elizabeth Grace combination!

BTW for future reference I recommend coming up with a shortlist prior to baby arriving, and then play the old 'I've just given birth' card and make as decision as soon as the baby arrives. I did this with both mine!

valiumSingleton · 20/07/2010 14:12

balloonslayer, I know what you mean, I went to school with children with the same names as my children, and if you'd told me as a teenager, see that boy? see that girl? one day you'll have children with those names, I'd have been

zenoushka · 20/07/2010 14:11

Eva Catherine

Jackstini · 20/07/2010 14:08

Oh, another tip is to get your dd's photo and place it above each of the individual names, written out.
When it looks right, that's the one

Jackstini · 20/07/2010 14:07

You seem to like a first name with nn potential so maybe:

Imogen (Immy, Genny)
Annabel (Anna, Annie, Bella)
Olivia (Oli, Liv)
Isobel (Izzy, Bella)
Eleanor (Ellie, Lenni)
Theresa (Tess, Terry)

Middle names:
Hope
Alice
Grace

If you really can't decide though yet, just put it off, a couple of weeks doesn't matter

Fimbo · 20/07/2010 14:05

Look, I went with dh's suggestion for our ds's name because I really couldn't think of anything at all I liked despite all the names out there and all the baby naming books in the world. Said ds is now 6 and suits his name. I will never be "in love" with the name but I like it and it is ds iyswim. More time for more would not have achieved anything. I am never likely to be pg again but I would still have the same predicament boy or girl as there is nothing that jumps out at me.

Good luck with naming your little girl. I will throw in a couple of suggestions though:-

Lara Elaine

Talia Louise

Imogen Luisa

I love Cecily Margot CaptainNancy

Can you phone him to see if he can re-arrange his time off? Does he need to be there - I know it's nice to both go, but as you're married I believe either of you can do it.

I realise more time might not make a difference in terms of the name you decide on, but it might mean you feel less panicked about it.

I think Elizabeth is lovely - what about Elizabeth Freya? That way, you both have an input.

BalloonSlayer · 20/07/2010 13:56

Is it any help to say that I have never been all that bothered about names for our DCs because I know that once they have got them I think that's the most wonderful name EVER and feel sorry for any other child not called that? I more or less let DH decide the first two, with a few you-must-be-jokings (Dolores, anyone? )

My DD has a very ordinary, classic name and I love it so much. Because it's hers. And I automatically like anyone called the same thing because they have such a wonderful name. A name I was - meh - about for 37 years before she was born.

SqueezyB · 20/07/2010 13:56

cancel the appointment and spend the afternoon off doing something nice together instead - take your lovely little daughter out for a walk in the park or go out for coffee and cake. I'm sure he wouldn't want you to be upset and this is one of the most important decisions you can make!

Other suggestions -

Isabel- similar to Elizabeth and very pretty.
Rebecca - a classic, not too popular anymore and lots of NN potential.
