Hi - we are having our first baby and do not know if it will be a boy or girl(though think its a boy).

For a boy we have the following:

Edward William (to be called Ned or Teddy as a boy and Ed when older if he prefers)

Theodore William (to be called Teddy as a boy and Theo when older)

Oscar William (threatened to be called 'the oz-man' or 'oz-striker' as a nn by my childish husband!)

To be honest I like all three the same(we are having William to honour someone in my husband's family but dont like it enough for a first name) so think we will have to take a straw poll as to if one seems to stand out better?

Girls names are a nightmare - so far we have Scarlett but are concerned it could be seen as pretentious and husband has a thing about needing to be abel to shorten a name - my best offer on Scarlett was Letty?

we are only half way there so not super urgent but its harder then I thought!

Edward William and Theodore William are both very nice names. Not keen on Oscar or Scarlett I'm afraid.

mathanxiety · 19/07/2010 21:48

I'm not a bit keen on Scarlett either. And I like Letty -- maybe Letitia?

Scarlett is Dublinese for extreme embarrassment, as in "I was scarlet".

I like all the boys' names -- they're all very solid names; maybe Theodore or Edward since you like the nn Teddy for both.

Edward, Theodore and Oscar are all absolutely gorgeous names. Edward and Theodore are both on our list. I love Oscar as well but it is a little bit too popular for my liking.

I am not at all keen on Scarlett though. I think because once I was at airport security and some annoying couple was trying to control their little girl who was called Scarlett and it just sounded odd to me "Scarlett come here". I like Letty though.

SpanishLady - I chose it for the same reasons. DD is 11 and it was much less common then. Oddly DD is not that feisty (compared with her mum!) but she is beautiful and confident so it works.
Good luck whatever you decide.

digging - absolutely see your point re changing NN - I am not worried about him staying the same name forever but guess we wanted to ensure the options available to him were he to feel he wanted to change it were ones we could live with!

thanks so much for your replies! It has made me feel that we are perhaps on the right path!

Sulisman - Scarlett and Oscar does sound great together.

I like Scarlett for the element of feisty-ness about it - I dont want her to be a spoiled femme fatale but beautiful and confident would be nice!

Boys names are all nice but prefer Edward over the other 2

You obviously want to call him Teddy though so why not drop Oscar? Reduce the choice!!

I would also query at what point you would change his nickname?

I know someone who had a little boy nickname until he was 10 when his mother told him he was too old for that name and needed to use a more grown up version of the name. He found that really hard because to him she could well have been changing his name from John to Sebastien! He does introduce himself by the adult name but all his friends call him the childs name and that is what he considers his name

happywheezer · 19/07/2010 16:07

They are all great names.
i have an Edward, and would consider William as a middle name.

Scarlett is lovely too, not pretentious at all. What about Hetty as a NN?

All your boys names are lovely.

Scarlett is certainly not pretentious around here.

mrspir8 · 19/07/2010 15:58

My friends daughter is called scarlett and she shortens it to Etta or Etty. I like it.

I love Theodore, every theo I have ever met has been a really nice guy.

Colliecross · 19/07/2010 13:41

Scarlett is lovely, don't think it's pretentious, and Letty is sweet. Edward and Theodore both great names.
