Nickname, Florrie

(We are not posh, is it too posh?!)

I like it.

Pingpong · 17/07/2010 12:15

I like Flora

zenoushka · 17/07/2010 12:09

Despite the margarine connotations I think it's a pretty name.

MummyLovesSadie · 16/07/2010 22:40

I agree with Belgianbun, I just can't understand why people would have a nn when it's as long as the real name! Unless like Shirleygoodness's dd's names & it's more of a funny pet-name that you'd use within the family.

How about Florentine with a nn of Flossie??

EmmaRoyd · 16/07/2010 18:56

It's a lovely name but it is spoilt by the margarine connotations. I went to school with a Flora and she endured the same 'spreads easily' taunts on a daily basis.

mrshewitt77 · 16/07/2010 18:13

Beautiful name - we're having a boy but before we found out it was a fave

Shirleygoodness · 15/07/2010 19:17

Of course, knew it didn't look right. But the pronunciation is about Flothhy, at least the way my Dad says it is!

My other favourite Gaelic names are Oighrig (Effie), Ronaig (sp? - Rachel) and Mar saili (I have one of these - Marjorie).

MaryMungo · 15/07/2010 19:13

Flòraidh

waitingforbedtime · 15/07/2010 17:59

Thanks, will look up gaelic version

I've got one. We're not posh and have a plain/funny surname. Can't see what the problem is with the margarine having the same name, it's not like it's a porn mag or anything. Florrie is close to the pronunciation of the Gaelic for it which I think is Flodidh.

We call ours FloJo, Flossie Bossie, and Flo ra the Explorer.

Oh, have just noticed you've gone off it for the spread connotations (wtf?)...

Adair · 15/07/2010 17:38

yy, rustic and homely rather than posh.

I used to think marg but now I know a lovely Flora age 12 I just think of her.

She is always Flora.

electra · 15/07/2010 11:39

I love it.

rockbudgie · 15/07/2010 11:38

I love it and wanted to call our baby Flora but hubby couldn't get past the margarine connotations. In the end, luckily, it wouldn't have suited her at all!

Random suggestion but I think Catriona is Scottish... I rather like despite it being my MIL's name!

Flora ia lovely

I think of Babar's baby rather than marge.

kveta · 15/07/2010 09:33

yep, Flora spereads easily was one of many taunts I suffered in the playground - had no idea what it meant until many years later though.

kids will alwys find something to pick on, so if you like the name, go for it. FWIW, my nickname ended up being Flo, despite my parents LOATHING it - they always called me by my full name.

flopsy1974 · 15/07/2010 09:29

Flora is lovely. A very pretty name.

waitingforbedtime · 15/07/2010 09:27

Totally gone off it given the spread like connotations!

spreads like.....

laura0007 · 14/07/2010 19:38

agree with angrypixie......my name is laura but i always got nicknamed flora spreadable!!

AngryPixie · 14/07/2010 19:34

A Flora friend of mine went through teenage hell with the advertising slogan 'Flora, spreads easily' But that might all be in dim & distant past now?

Doozie · 14/07/2010 19:30

Love Flora but DH ruined it for me with suggested school yard taunts such as 'spread 'em Flora'.
