to think that "Baby on Board" signs in cars are ridiculous?

Why have a Baby on Board sign in your car?

Do people think it creates a protective force field around their cars?

Will other drivers really think "well I was going to crash into you but now I can see you have children, I won't"?

I have heard the argument that they are there in the event of a crash to warn emergency services to look for a child but people don't take the stickers out of their cars when the kids aren't in it, do they?

Isn't the child car seat larger and more conspicuous any way?

Really don't see the point.

i know what you meant!

ronshar · 16/01/2010 23:11

Not all parents strap in thier children unfortunately. Especially while DUI!

WidowWadman · 16/01/2010 23:08

Shouldn't the child still be strapped in the car seat, which is strapped to the car, anyway?

I'd have thought that'd be much more of an indicator of the presence of a child than a stupid "Look, I'm fertile"-sign

ronshar · 16/01/2010 23:04

Pants. It should read I CAN categorically state

ronshar · 16/01/2010 23:03

I worked for Ambulance service and I cant categorically state that at NO time in my training or the 5 years I spent scraping drunks and smackheads off the streets of Brighton, was I informed of a sign to be placed in a car window that would make our lives easier in the case of an RTC!

It made life a nightmare to be honest because you waste time looking for someone who isnt there. I have had to stumble down dark banks looking for a baby that wasnt there. A car that turned over with three seats in and signs in all the bloody windows. The driver was unconscious. It took us longer to get the driver to hospital because we were looking for children!!!!!

So get the signs if you want to but please do not labour under the impression that they serve any real purpose.

yawn and done that answers are so lame
try harder

Clither · 16/01/2010 22:46

Oooops, meant to say MORE patient, not less....

Clither · 16/01/2010 22:44

OP....agree, but probably for different reasons. Having been deemed "unlikely to get pregnant", started to see them as examples of people just flaunting their fertility.

Post-IVF, with dd now 10mo, I still see them that way. Wouldn't have one even if someone gave me a new car to put it in.

Call me irrational...but it makes me angry with driver in front, not less patient!

Portofino · 14/01/2010 22:56

Cold staring eyes......

Portofino · 14/01/2010 22:56

I don't understand why people get stressed about these. If they are their in case of accident, or even if just for showing off (not that i have a Princess on Board one or anything).

Drivers don't pay any attention to them, and if they save 1 life in event of an accident....they are not hurting anyone.

Unlike the owner of the car i parked next to recently who had a full screen print of his ds on a sunblind in the car window, which totally freaked me out when i got out of the car.....

overmydeadbody · 14/01/2010 22:48

again?

Really?

lollopops · 14/01/2010 22:47

What about an 'annoying MIL on board'?

lollopops · 14/01/2010 22:46

I was going to get a sign saying 'twins on board' . Their father warned me not to!

LetThereBeRock · 14/01/2010 22:39

It is an urban myth. If you think about it logically it makes no sense for the emergency services to rely on them.

And if they're so important then why are there no calls for us to put them on our windows in order to alert the fire service who have to find people in smoke filled homes?

Also if they did rely on it don't you think the emergency services would advise all parents to have one on their vehicle?

MollieO · 14/01/2010 22:31

The police recommend that you don't have them in your car. Reason is it is more likely that the sign will be in a female's car and it highlights the fact that a female is likely to be driving alone with their children. At least that is what the traffic police said when they came to talk to our post natal group.

blushes · 14/01/2010 22:24

Letthereberock, that's probably true. I've been looking online to trying to ascertain whether it's pure urban myth or not... Nothing coming up so far apart from forum discussions very similar to this one.

If it is urban myth then I guess that's £2.50 wasted! Because I certainly wouldn't put a sign up just to show off that I've got a baby, and I also think that if someone's going to drive like a nobber, they'll drive like a nobber whether you've got a baby on board sign up or not.

LetThereBeRock · 14/01/2010 21:44

Blushes. I'm quite sure the emergency services are trained to look for casualties in the event of an accident even if none are immediately visible.
They aren't so incompetent that they have to rely on a sticker to do that for them.

A 4 inch sticker which is less visible than a car seat, toys or various other signs that a child is present.

The same sticker that's attached to a substance that's very likely to shatter and in the event of an accident.

Also if a car is so badly mangled that they're unable to see a child then what are the odds of them seeing a sticker which is much smaller?

blushes · 14/01/2010 21:38

We've bought one for our soon-to-be-born child to alert emergency services in case of an accident, and for no other reason.

The response from the poster who is a member of the emergency services has made me question this slightly now... But then again that's only one person. Any other emergeny services workers out there have an opinion? (That's a genuine question, not a dig).

In any case I'll still put the sign up. To my mind, if there's any chance it could help rescue workers realise there is a child on board, that's a good thing. And if not, surely it does no harm?

Perhaps those who find it so irritating should cut (over?) anxious first time parents a little slack. Aren't most parents a little ott the first time round?

gingini · 14/01/2010 21:22

they even do personalised versions of them now as well! check this out www.personalisedcarsigns.co.uk

Heqet · 14/01/2010 14:47

Thanks PF. I worried it was a bit snippy but I think it is very unfair when people say such things since it is really saying that because they have read / participated in a discussion on a particular subject one or more times in the past on here, then that subject should not be raised again by anyone else at any point in the future. It's mean. It's basically saying "shut up, I don't want to hear about this again." So what? Other people might do. Bog off and talk about something else then.

It's also staggeringly arrogant! I have had this conversation therefore this conversation never needs to be had again and should never be had again by anyone. There is nothing more to be said. We said it all.

It's also most unwelcoming to newbies. Imagine joining a site, plucking up the courage to start a conversation and getting slapped down with a "yawn", a "not this again", a "boring", or a "4" or a biscuit (when you have no idea what the buggery bollocks they mean by 4 or biscuit anyway!!!)

Rude.

Concordia · 13/01/2010 23:56

i'm with fibilou
although, i did see one once which said, tiny yorkshireman on board and if i ever see it being sold, i might buy it.
princess though, my arse....

PrincessFiorimonde · 13/01/2010 23:47

Heqet - that's a nice post.

mayorquimby · 13/01/2010 20:40

"paramedics was very insistant about getting him to tell them if there was a child in the car (thankfully not) as there was a pfb sign. "

So this would appear to be evidence of them affecting emergency services in a negative way as no parents take them off when they are driving without their children and are unnecessarily worrying emergency services who are wondering why despite no sign of a child the parent has a sign insisting that there is one on board.

doughnutty · 13/01/2010 18:36

I find, esp on motorways, they appear to be a license to drive with no care or attention. How many have you been cut up by or had speed past you at 90mph?

I just hope they're the people who don't take the sign down when their kids aren't in the car.

Zone2mum · 13/01/2010 18:20

YANBU
Why run the risk of increasing blind spots by pasting up unnecessary stickers on car windows?
