Neighbour blocked shared drive deliberately, AIBU or are they?

We moved into our new home around a year ago and have had nothing but weird vibes from our neighbours who we share a drive with. Our front doors face each other up a steep drive and we both have garages at the end of them, kind of backing onto our separate gardens.

We have been nothing but pleasant with them and have kind of just let them use the driveway as there isn’t a lot of room for two cars so we never really pushed it.

They have always been a bit odd. A lot of curtain twitching when we leave the house and barely looking up when we say good morning etc. Other neighbours have told us they’ve had issues with them but we have just assumed they’re quirky and let them get on with it.

ANYWAY, we had a rubbish clearance man come to collect some rubbish from our side of the drive and the garden yesterday. He called us after (we are currently away seeing family) to say he couldn’t do half of it because the neighbour said he couldn’t pull up the drive - he did knock to ask. And then used his car to completely block off access to the driveway, so the rubbish clearance men struggled to get the rubbish past the car and didn’t want to cause any damage so abandoned the job.

For avoidance of doubt, the rubbish guys we use are really lovely and polite, we used them on our last home refurb, and they’re not the type to argue or whatever. They just said okay then, took photos to show off, and left the job when they couldn’t do anymore.

WIBU to ask my neighbours what they’re playing at?! It’s cost us money as we have had to (rightfully) pay for the full clearance even though they couldn’t access it all.

Or AIBU for wanting to be able to use our shared driveway?

I've had this very scenario years ago. Normal neighbours moved and pita neighbours moved in. One BH I had to ask them to move their car 5 times. After a row it was agreed that no one could park on the shared drive. Up until then common sense had prevailed and it wasn't an issue. This is not going to end well. Sorry.

Why do people behave in this way? Life is so much harder, and it takes more effort, being an awkward arsehole.

I always wonder this too. It's annoying for everyone else but imagine actually being that bitter and twisted and just absolutely horrible?

To make it clear, the rubbish van was just due to drive up the shared bit for about 15 mins to load up. He asked in case the guy needed to move his car out and that’s when our neighbour said no and blocked off the whole drive.

We’ve been told that when the previous owner needed scaffolding over the house to fix the roof they stopped that too and solicitors had to get involved, so they have form.

Was this disclosed to you before you bought?

Kate0726 · 23/10/2026 14:57

We have had a similar situation in past. Previous owners let neighbours get away with parking on shared drive. When we moved in we told them we would need to use the drive & garage. They said "don't worry just knock & we'll move". So we did but it was irritating as we had two small children & I was very pregnant. I said I hope they didn't mind us knocking if I went into labour in the night. They soon got fed up and parked properly.

LeopardOnEverything · 23/10/2026 14:57

It was silly to leave rubbish out to be collected in your absence if the neighbours have form for being awkward. You should have arranged the collection for a day when you'd be at home. Why did the guy even go to your neighbour's door to ask permission?

rwalker · 23/10/2026 14:55

Pile the rubbish on your drive right upto the line

Allseeingallknowing · 23/10/2026 14:53

Our drives are adjoining not shared, it’s marked out on our deeds in red. Some get confused between shared and adjoining drives.

Mangelwurzelfortea · 23/10/2026 14:50

Go and speak to them first and ask why he blocked access to your rubbish removers using your shared drive. He may have a reason (presumably he does in his own head, however ridiculous). Once you've heard this, you can decide what to do next. But I think you do need to have a (calm) conversation first before moving onto letters and what have you.

CitizenofMoronia · 23/10/2026 14:48

You can start by parking on the drive, if you cant get near to the front of your garage because he is over you side then block him in till he asks you to move, then tell him to shif his car to his side of the drive so you can get your car on, hes trying to assert dominance over the drive, you have to stop him.

also check your deads on the land registry to see if its down as an Easment, if it is that is a legally protected peice of land nither of you own and for access only.

Toodarktooearly · 23/10/2026 13:56

Sorry if I'm being obtuse but if it's a shared drive with access to garages aren't you supposed to leave it clear not pile rubbish up on it? My understanding of a shared drive is that you can drive up it or down it but you cannot park on it or block it in any way.

Where did it say the rubbish was piled up on the drive ? It didn't so goodness knows where you got that from. No doubt it was in front of the OPs own garage or in her garden.

44PumpLane · 23/10/2026 14:43

Agree with @Yupstillhere , I'd also remind them that at some point they will require YOU to be accommodating as they will probably also need access for work or collections too, and you'd much rather foster positive reciprocal arrangements ie they should stop being a twat!

And yes. Reclaim your actual drive, get them to move every single time or block them in and tell him that's what you will HAVE to do.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 23/10/2026 14:43

You really do have the law on your side here. If in the deeds rules to a shared drive have to be adhered to.

Your suggestion of writing a letter is a good first port of call, maybe with written evidence, not that you should need to but it's a reminder to your neighbour that the driveway is jointly shared and not just a ROW for you. He needs to be shown that while you're more than happy to be a good neighbour, a push over is something you won't be.

Yupstillhere · 23/10/2026 14:38

Why move it back into your garden? Speak to your neighbour and ask if there's a problem? Tell him the rubbish will be there until you can get the rubbish collection man back. Tell him it's going to cost you twice the price because they'll have to come back. I would ask him to pay.

Try not to be rude, but don't apologise/be all English about it.
Tell him it's a shared driveway and you need access to your garage so he needs to stop parking on the driveway. A stern talking to might be enough for him be behave or he might up his game.

Unfortunate it happened whilst you're away as not exactly relaxing and it's costing you money.

What a fucking idiot you have for a neighbour. Hopefully you get to the ignoring you and staying out of your business stage with him.

GintyMcGinty · 23/10/2026 14:37

Of course you need to ask what’s going on

and speak to - don’t write a letter. It won’t improve things.

Sidebeforeself · 23/10/2026 14:37

Don’t go straight to letters. You need to take these things in small steps other wise you quickly have nowhere else to go. Go round when you get back and calmly explain what happened and remind him of what you’d said before you left. Make a note of his response. Then , if no improvement and he blocks you again you can move to a solicitors letter ( having taken photos etc.) Remember though that neighbour disputes have to be declared if you want to sell at some point ( appreciate you’ve only just moved in.)

PickAChew · 23/10/2026 14:32

WoesFromAuntFlo · 23/10/2026 13:56

And yes the driveway is shared on the deeds! I’ve tried best to draw it on notes. Blue is where he normally parks and red is where he deliberately parked after the rubbish guy knocked the door and asked if he could go up the drive to collect the rubbish.

It would be a shame if the rubbish that still needed removing spilled over onto the red bit.

Daftapath · 23/10/2026 14:31

I think I would leave the remaining rubbish there until it can be collected. Serves him right!

WoesFromAuntFlo · 23/10/2026 14:27

Yeah I think we have just been pushovers for an easy life, it’s really pissed me off that now I’ve got rubbish to move back into my garden when we get back tomorrow. He’ll be the first to complain if those shed panels blow over onto his side in this storm too!

I’ll be writing a letter I think. We have tried to talk to them about other things before but she doesn’t say a word and he just mumbles/grumbles and walks off.

Stop being so accommodating and letting them push you out of your driveway!

AMarkAMissionABrandAScar · 23/10/2026 14:26

I'm sorry, as nobody likes conflict, but I would have to knock and ask them why they did that. See if they can come up with an excuse face to face. And then yes, send them a solicitor's letter.

Boobyslims · 23/10/2026 14:22

Start parking by your garage and claim your spot! Don’t let them take over that lane. Tell them to move over if they are blocking. You can’t be a pushover, they sound like total arseholes

CardboardScott · 23/10/2026 14:22

WoesFromAuntFlo · 23/10/2026 14:15

When we left we saw him outside and said “don’t worry about the rubbish by the garage, someone is coming to pick it up tomorrow” as was worried he’d kick up a fuss about it being there!

In which case they are just dreadful people.

I’d be trying a charm offensive to win them over otherwise they are going to be really difficult neighbours long term

doitwithlove · 23/10/2026 14:21

I would knock and ask what they think they are achieving by being narrow minded when workman are trying to do there job whilst reminding them the drive is a shared drive. Absolute twats

Youlostyourlemons · 23/10/2026 14:20

Arseholes. Send them a letter saying they need to pay for the rubbish collectors to come back as they obstructed the guys meaning you have to pay twice and let them know in future to keep their car to their side of the shared area as you will no longer be parking outside to facilitate them.
