To think everything will be unrecognisable in 50 years

Just thinking about how different the UK was in the 70s and how change is supercharged now by tech and mass migration and the loss of shared cultural reference points in TV and newspapers and radio.

I live in Glasgow and many parts of it are no longer at all Scottish-seeming apart from the old sandstone tenements. What even is Scottish any more? It's hard to imagine Scottish independence being taken up by the new communities. But what's next?

I think human societies are programmed to self destruct every so often in the absence of external numbers control pressures and I think that's what's starting now across Europe. We have never had it so good in the history of time yet rage flourishes

What can we do as individuals, I'm just not sure

Please define "culturally British" and explain who gets to be the arbiter of this?

I don't need to define it because you know what it is, I know what it is and so does everybody on this board. There are a great many books written on British culture. It is broad: English, Scottish, Irish and Welsh as well as all the regions within them. It's everything our ancestors would have recognised, broadly speaking, although of course it has continued to grow since then. Don't be tiresome. If I tried to say it was impossible to define Somalian culture, Malaysian culture, Korean culture.. do you think the indiginous people of those lands would agree? Every race has a traditional culture. They are all worth preserving.

MrsPernicious · Today 14:06

I think this huge influx of interest in British values is great.
The churches are going to be full again. There will be endless volunteers to help at the Village fayre, enough to arrange apple bobbing, beer barrel rolling, wassailing and start a new Morris side. Can't wait, most the current volunteers are exceeding the average lifespan by quite a bit.

No one cares if they are white but if they are also not culturally British then the fact that they have a British passport is just a legal technicality. I have met many British nationals who are in no way British. Not because of their skin colour but because they are living in a completely different culture, and quite intentionally so. They have no interest or regard for British culture or history. They are here for practical and economical reasons.

You can go back to the Saxons and repeat the same.
My father came here from Ireland in 1956 for those very reasons.

Is there a problem with people not being white?

There is a huge problem when the indiginous population becomes swamped with people from a completely different culture, who are not prepared to integrate and take on the local culture, but instead want to overtake and impose their own practices on the indiginous people, who never asked to be taken over.

When you have men coming over in droves, who have to be given leaflets about how rape isn't acceptable, and who rape any women on the boats, you know that you have a huge cultural divide. It doesn't matter really whether those immigrants are white, black or brown, it would be problematic either way, because the indiginous people and the immigrants do not share the same culture.

However, the immigrants just so happen to be black and brown, which means the lefties can just shout "RACIST" and overlook the huge gulf between the two cultures, which are never going to peacefully co-exist, because there are too many differences.

I have neighbours who are of Indian descent - they were born and raised here and they are brown - they could not happily rub along with immigrants who arrived from Somalia yesterday - it's not colour, it's culture. I am so sick of the whole "RACIST" claptrap.

@Flatwhitefiend

I guess Granny was referring to the Jewish population, moving from the ' poorer ' areas out to the ' nicer ' areas - Giffnock, Whitcraigs and Newton Mearns.
After working hard and usually establishing businesses and in turn building synagogues to worship in.

The population of Jewish people seems to have decreased over the years and I know that 2 synagogues have since closed down / turned into something else.

As for this actual thread, the communities the Op is referring to will have been born in Glasgow and they themselves will have had children and grandchildren since being born and therefore are as Scottish as I am - just maybe a different colour of skin and a different religion.
There will be muslims, sikhs and hindis and therefore there are now mosques, gurdwaras and temples.

The former Synagogue in Stamperland - Southside of Glasgow is now a block of flats I believe, it closed in 2012 after approx 70 years, and the former Church of Scotland in Stamperland is now a community center containing a mosque.

But the seventies had good in it too surely- now isn’t perfect- community is gone now, there’s more anger now, more thuggery, more loneliness, more isolation

I think if you look at the decline at of the great Roman empire and the long 'dark ages' that followed where much less educated and more violent tribes reigned... that what we are entering into now with the decline of the great western civilisation and the mass exodus from the third world into the west. It's incredibly sad for those of us who remember Europe/America/Canada/Australia in previous decades.. but I think it's just the way of the world. Civilsations rise and fall. If you look at it from Britain's point of view though, the coming of the Saxons/Vikings/Normans was bloody and terrifying at the time but it always settled and everyone acclimatised. However those cultures were very similar to those already here and in much smaller numbers. What we are experiencing today is completely unprecedented in many ways. I try to be optimistic and have no blame towards individuals other than those who are personally violent and criminal. But I think we are a little way in to the beginning of the death throes of western civilization and I think most will realise the fallacy of 'all cultures are equal' at far too late a stage to make a difference.
I have 3 DDs and 1 DS passing on English/Welsh/Scottish/Irish ancestral culture and hsitory has become a primary focus of my parenting as I feel it's one small thing I can do, even if it is ultimately futile.

Ah, the myth of the Dark Ages. I didn’t realise that people still believe all that.

How would you define English

English is a race and an ethnicity. Anyone can be British. English is something you are born into. Same as anyone can be born in India and have an Indian passport, but not anyone can be Indian. You can be born overseas but still be English. It's your race. My brother's children were born in Japan but it would be laughable to call them Japanese, they are half Welsh, half English, born in Japan.

Very true. We had yet learnt what we should worry about.

Well put. The majority agree. Mumsnetters are really, genuinely clueless though, or terrified of telling the truth.

The majority agree? Where do you get that from?

PammyPrang · Today 14:00

@blondeseaside Dh’s dn was going out with a Muslim young man. He attended dn’s family events, went on holiday with dn etc, but very woke dn said in a genuinely reasonable and accepting tone that she could not meet his family or even be known about as they considered white girls trash. I was speechless!

Have a look at census.

So give us the figures then. In any case if people are British, they're British. It's irrelevant what colour their skin is.

Snowyowl99 · Today 13:58

Rubbish. That's like saying that everything in Coventry is English, because it's in England....try that in Foleshill, an area where there is nothing English at all.

Forget 50 years, it's over now. This is no longer a country. As two-tier Keir said, it's now an "island of strangers." The destructive, masochistic, hate-filled Left have used immigration as a tool to destroy national identity. Andrew Neather, a speechwriter for Blair, admitted that their plan was use immigration to "rub the right's nose in diversity and render their arguments out of date." Personally, I call that fascism – liberal fascism.

I no longer live in a nation with a shared history, shared culture, shared identity, etc. It's a joke. I wouldn't even fly the St George or the Union Jack in case someone threw a brick through my window. Our libraries and universities have been 'de-colonised' and even the literary canon is under attack. When I was young, I knew who I was. I was English-British. My history was the Battle of Britain and the tragedy of the Somme and the poetry of Wilfred Owen. It was Dickens and Jane Austen and Virginia Woolf. Now I no longer feel that way. I don't know who I am.

I hate the people who have done this to me. HATE them. I don't hate 'immigrants'. Certain groups I dislike, but I love the sweet Filipino nurse who lives next door, and the nice Punjabi lady who runs my local shop. It's a question of scale. The small island of Okinawa has its own distinct identity. If ten million white Swedes moved there, they would change the identity of Okinawa forever. It's as simple as 2 + 2 = 4. No one voted for mass immigration or multiculturalism. They were IMPOSED on us.

👏👏👏👏👏👏

And for those Lefties trotting out the old "let's be multicultural" trope, let me tell you, most immigrants have no desire to integrate, in fact, where I am from, they frequently refer to white girls as "white trash", and do not hide the fact that their children would never be allowed to marry a white boy/girl. The Lefties have their arms wide open to people who hate them, imo. Bugger off Tarquin, and take your hessian vest and quinoa with you. Please.

You've interviewed "most immigrants" to determine their thinking on these matters?

Wow. How long did that take, and where can we read the findings from your research?
