To think everything will be unrecognisable in 50 years

Just thinking about how different the UK was in the 70s and how change is supercharged now by tech and mass migration and the loss of shared cultural reference points in TV and newspapers and radio.

I live in Glasgow and many parts of it are no longer at all Scottish-seeming apart from the old sandstone tenements. What even is Scottish any more? It's hard to imagine Scottish independence being taken up by the new communities. But what's next?

I think human societies are programmed to self destruct every so often in the absence of external numbers control pressures and I think that's what's starting now across Europe. We have never had it so good in the history of time yet rage flourishes

What can we do as individuals, I'm just not sure

To the poster who said its not older people who are angry - you're clearly not mixing with the right people. My friends and I of that demographic are very angry.
We're angry that our dread of needing medical care is very real, we are sick to death of war and the bullying political culture of the US which is having an effect worldwide on behaviour, we're very concerned about homelessness, the fact the poor are getting poorer, the general attitude of disrespect permeating from politics down to everyday interactions, the casual racism and I could go on . . .

Barrydoughnut · Today 19:48

Do you think I am lying? I met up with a friend who lives on Ayrshire coast and she mentioned that there were only a few non-white kids at her DC’s school. I’m sure that’s the same in the rural
school where I grew up. It’s not the same in cities.

MsMacheath · Today 19:44

Barrydoughnut · Today 19:41

Yes. There were 5 of them inc DC. I know one is of Nigerian heritage and one Bangladeshi, no idea about the others. From the chat about “culture day” at the school, I think there are about 80 different nationalities in the heritage of the backgrounds of the kids at the school (I think this includes regions that span other countries that have their own identity).

Where in Scotland was this?

MsMacheath · Today 19:44

XenaSharples · Today 19:39

Why is that surprising? My closest friends in school were Nigerian and Malaysian. That was in Ireland in the '80s, which was overwhelmingly white.

Poster's son met up with "a bunch of kids" who'd recently left school - none of whom were white. That's pretty surprising given the demographic of Scotland.

Well put. The majority agree. Mumsnetters are really, genuinely clueless though, or terrified of telling the truth.

It’s always been left leaning and is not a true representation.

Barrydoughnut · Today 19:41

DC met up this weekend with a (different) bunch of kids who recently left school. None are white.

Really? That's quite surprising given that Scotland is, according to the last census, 96% white. And that figure is skewed by Glasgow and to a lesser extent Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen.

The UK is a small densely populated country. There are strong regional cultures. I wouldn’t risk telling someone from Yorkshire there is no Yorkshire culture and I think if you asked someone who had lived in Yorkshire for even a short period of time what the region’s traits were they would be able to tell you, even if it’s just because they had been specifically told themselves.

I was in Glasgow yesterday. I was mainly in the West End so lots of English accents. Still felt Scottish though. Also didn’t feel dodgy in the centre despite the recently bad publicity but my friend’s DCs are at uni there and have talked to her about where the dodgy parts are and when they know to avoid.

I live elsewhere in Scotland and my DCs went/go to a school with a lot of kids with a diverse cultural background. DC2’s closest friends have an ethnic heritage from countries in North Africa and the ME. One wants to be a doctor, the other a lawyer. One plays the same online games as
DC, the other goes to the same parties. DC met up this weekend with a (different) bunch of kids who recently left school. None are white, I don’t know the ethnic heritage of all are but I had a chat to one of them a few days ago who said how grateful to their parents they were for coming to the UK as they much preferred it for reasons they listed to their parents home country. These are lovely clever polite and respectful hard working kids, at university and ambitious.

We might talk about “communities” as if this draws lines of separation but communities are multi-layered and can also bring us together. You can’t just look around and go “oooh, demographic change”. There are complications but we need to keep talking, be honest, acknowledge and address them. It’s not an inevitable disaster zone.

Socio-economic discriminator or racist? It’s a fine line.

Dont worry OP, in 50 years we’ll all be dead and AI will rule the world.

It's not a fine line, but I get that a lot of people don't understand the difference

So now you’ve realised non white people have contributed to British culture, you can suddenly accept there is a ‘British culture’, say how amazing they are and provide examples of it? 😂

I don't know what your problem is with me, but it's starting to get annoying. For the umpteenth time, I have never once claimed that there is no such thing as British culture. I have asked you to quote back the post(s) where you believe that I said that, but you haven't done so, so I presume that you know they don't exist.

My point all along has been that British culture is constantly evolving and changing, and that as such, there will inevitably be different interpretations of what it actually is.

I'm glad that you seem to have come round to this point of view.

Hopefully we can agree that the video shared by @DorsetKnobBiscuit is a very fine example of contributions from an immigrant becoming a much-loved part of our ever-evolving British culture.

I think in Scotland we've never had to face the feeling of the culture you grew up in ceasing to exist. I wish it had changed in a wealthy still in the EU way rather than an anyone to fill the Brexit gaps way tbh (sorry to be a socio-economic discriminator but there we are).

Socio-economic discriminator or racist? It’s a fine line.

Bohemian rhapsody has to be one of the greatest British songs of all time.

Totally agree. Everything from Ernie the Fastest Milkman in the West to Bohemian Rhapsody.

If I'm bored I watch this and marvel at the young men's reactions. Excellent.

My dcs in their early 20s die of envy of my era! When TOTP was must-have viewing and the charts had meaning. When there was all sorts in the top 40, from pop to rock to country to dreadful novelty songs that came out of nowhere.

There was definitely a golden age of pop music and it ain’t now. What classic songs have there been lately? Answer not needed.

The power cuts were only over 9 weeks and they were not all the time. As a teen I remember seeing the petrol ration book but not doing homework by candles or parrafin lamp.

Quite. I remember playing Subbutteo floodlight by candles.

Great things about the 1970s
Fashion - Halston, Gucci, Fiorucci
The Music - Queen, Abba, Punk, Glam, Disco, Bowie, It's CHRIISSSTMAS
Film - Star Wars, Jaws, The Godfather
Equality legislation
Great telly
Concorde
The Silver Jubilee
Interior design was FUN
Food got better and more varied

Brilliant times. Bounces off on space hopper.

Do you think that “diverse looking people” can’t be racist? Well, in the words of some who haunt these threads, “educate yourself”. There is huge animosity and conflict between different immigrant groups. Last year there was violence between Muslims and Sikhs in Leicester (I think). That’s small fry compared with the rival gang conflicts in France, especially in schools.

When people grow up with differences they're less likely to consider those differences important. That's all I meant.

PammyPrang · Today 18:47

DorsetKnobBiscuit · Today 18:31

I remember my dad saying that modern music was shit in the 1970s.

The teenage me replied 'It's not for you'.

If you don't like the current music then it's almost certainly meant for a generation younger than yours.

Er because of the country being borderline bankrupt, three days weeks, doing homework by candlelight when the power was off.

Didn't sound fab...

I worry that the U.K. and other European countries will have “gone bust”. Or certainly not be anywhere near as wealthy or powerful as what it currently is/pretends it is.

The economy is on a downhill slide with a lack of manufacturing and a spiralling welfare bill. It’s unsustainable. Not only will such countries struggle to finance current welfare and services people are losing their shit about it. Look at France currently. Apparently over there they’re struggling to balance the books so are making hard choices and people aren’t unhappy. At some point will a country say they can no longer finance welfare, education, healthcare, etc? And society breaks down. France is predicted to have a govt debt equivalent to 120% of its GDP by next year.

And quietly in the background countries like China and to a lesser extent India are ascending. China’s the leading manufacturing power and that’s only increasing

so if European countries in 50 years time are poorer in relation to countries like China where does that leave us? A new world order? If China and other countries hold the cards from a trade pov? PWC predicts by 2050 6 out of the 7 leading economies will be from (currently) emerging countries. They’re talking about Indonesia and also African countries such as Nigeria. Thats only 24 years away!

Currently people talk about there being a problem with “illegal immigrants” coming here. Maybe by 2050 Brits will be trying to smuggle themselves into Nigeria or India! In search of a better life. 😁.

if you look back in history Europe being so dominant throughout world has really only been for a couple,of hundred years. So maybe it’s more of a reset back to how things used to be.
