Should I complain to Lidl?

givingupimdone · Yesterday 21:47

So I was doing some shopping with dd (4) and when near the fridges the assistant who was shelf staking dropped or knocked off (I didn’t see) this heavy metal bar that goes at the front of the shelves where they put the prices IYKWIM. It really hurt and shocked me - I immediately bent over to put pressure on my foot cos it was stinging, he did apologise and I appreciate he didn’t do it on purpose and I was overwhelmingly glad it didn’t hit dd! But as I’ve taken my rights off now this is the mark it’s left……..
so YABU- just get over it
OR
YANBU - that’s not just a bump, say something

It was an accident and the employee apologised, if you were going to say something you should have done so at the time.

You should get your foot checked and you should email them to let them know what happened. It should be recorded in their accident book and health and safety around this process should be reviewed to ensure it doesn't happen again. Next time it could seriously hurt someone.

Her foot that is in no pain and only has a mark? What a waste of NHS resources.

Some of these responses are soooo ‘Mumsnet’ 🤣 I’m not trying to be an ahole or claim anything 🤣 nor am I claiming I have a broken foot or ptsd from the event. HOWEVER, thank you to those who have provided reasonable responses……. I am inclined to say something just in an email as it could have been a really nasty accident for a vulnerable person or child

Were you actually injured? Or just a bit of a red mark? Get it checked by a doctor if you are worried. A bit late to complain now, would you recognise the shelf stacker?

It broke the skin and I bled so nothing horrendous

Lidl won’t help you. I was injured by their automatic doors that malfunctioned and closed on me and sliced my arm open and their head office couldn’t have been less interested.

You do need to pay attention to what’s happening around you when you’re shopping though, especially with a 4 year old.

You needed better legal advice - my home insurance took my case on for free when I slipped in a well known shop - can’t mention name as still ongoing legal battle but they admit blame and will get compensation as needed a ankle operation and leg in plaster and off work for think 4mths

OffTheMap · Today 11:06

I think you should put in a report so that they can (hopefully) alert staff to stack in a way that does not injure people.

I was in Lidl a few years ago and the staff stacked up a huge tower of baskets , tall than me, that toppled over grazing my arm. I wrote to them saying what had happened and said stacking baskets like that was a risk.

I’ve also been in Lidl when a load of ceiling tiles came down on people

I would feedback to them that nobody did an incident report for this… they should have logged it so that head office could at the very least review if the mechanism for this part needs to be changed / improved.

FillerTrackOnTheAlbumOfLife · Today 11:14

They should fill in an accident report - they are obliged to do this.

It's unlikely anyone in the shop will respond in a complaint because it would be considered a personal injury claim, which they'd have to pass to their insurers. When I worked in a customer-facing environment we were told not to engage with this type of complaint but to escalate it straight to the legal team - as any kind of apology/compensation might be taken as an admission of liability. So if you want to complain you are best off doing it in writing. It sounds like you do have a claim, if you feel it is worth pursuing.

I complained once to Next HO (after the manager of the shop advised me to do) after the top I’d tried on had pins all in the arms. I only realised when I tried to remove it and one of the pins it scratched me all down my arm, drawing blood. Arm was a mess, it bloody stung for ages too.

I suspect, looking back, that they’d dressed a mannequin in the shop (possibly) and used the pins to do this? Maybe? Shop assistant was thinking that this had been a returned item and the previous owner had tacked it? I’ll still never know the full story.

Regardless, Next HO sent an apology and a £50 voucher.

StarChild07 · Today 11:22

I agree with a pp, they should have at least filled out an incident form. Understand that the staff member may have been inexperienced and they did apologise, but this could have been a worse outcome.

I would write the email. You were the one injured. You should at least get a voucher out of it even if you're not expecting anything. 💐

LuciferOverLancashire · Today 11:27

@givingupimdone I don’t understand why you are getting such a hard time here OP, imagine if that bar had struck your child on their head ? I would complain.

I don't either. I guess people are out for some entertainment, at the expense of somebody else's misfortune.

It didn't though.

It was an accident. All a complaint will do is raise a laugh for whoever reads it. What a complete waste of time for everyone involved.

LuciferOverLancashire · Today 11:34

@TheFishFish why would they laugh at someones injury ?

zingally · Today 11:37

I had an accident in a Sainsburys years and years ago. It was down to a genuine health and safety breach, as opposed to just a mere accident. I wrote to the general manager of the store and a few weeks later I got a £10 gift voucher in the post. I was happy to consider it settled from there.
By all means, write to the manager, but if you're expecting a big compo from an entirely random accident, you'll going to be disappointed.

They will laugh at someone complaining and clearly trying to get a voucher out of it.

It was an accident. Op wasnt hurt in any serious way, the employee apologised. Let it go.

bababamama · Today 11:42

Unless you’re having to miss out on something planned due to the pain then no don’t contact them, accidents happen, a mark doesn’t mean anything other than a tiny bruise

LuciferOverLancashire · Today 11:45

@TheFishFish nowhere has OP asked for a voucher, unless I missed that. Perhaps the staff member hadn’t been given training/a risk assessment.
It isn’t a laughing matter to accidentally injure the public

All anyone who sends in a complaint for trivial shit is doing is begging for a voucher. Let's be honest.

And all the training in the world can't prevent the occasional thing being dropped.

Anyone who submits these types of complaints are looking for financial gain. They often request compensation for the most minor of inconveniences. The OP has already received an apology, best to leave it at that.
