Using AI to remove school photo watermarks

marblyarch · Yesterday 21:01

I’m surprised at how many people are doing this. Some school mums were discussing it after I mentioned forking out for DSs photographs (20 pounds for one digital image), sort of in a ‘why would you pay for them when ChatGPT removes the watermarks for free!’ I mentioned it later to my sister who proceeded to show me how she’d done it with my nieces school images! To be fair they looked great! No difference at all and she saved £££. But it just feels a bit off to me? If everyone starts doing it then professional school photos just won’t happen anymore…

The individual photos were always a bit naff. I would buy the class print (I know many of the parents still so still see the those "children" occasionally although now adults)

bridgetreilly · Today 17:34

It’s fine not to buy the photos. It’s fine to take your own photos. It’s not fine to steal the photos. This really isn’t hard to understand.

I send them to my friend who works in photography and he fixes them for me and cleans the mess off their faces etc.

Then I get them ordered online.

I have 3 children and I think the cheapest option this year was £11.99 for one print off. And my daughter wasn't even wearing her cardigan properly

It sucks but when you have multiple people who want one, me, dad, nan, great nan and a bundle is £20+ per child, I don't have that money.

On that basis I find my weekly shop a bit expensive... So I'll just rob the corner shop.... It's EXACTLY the same... You're robbing from a small business for something not essential

Absolutely any online photo of you or your kids can be used for “nefarious” ai purposes. Unless you plan to go to the extremes of having zero online footprint, it pretty pointless worrying about it.

I dont post my children online. So not sure what your point is.

You're also quite ignorant if you think that uploading your children's photo AI is the same as posting it online to a handful of friends and family. I do hope you haven't got children.

Do some research on CSA and AI. Lest you make yourself look silly again.

So for example a photo of somebody has been uploaded. That could then be searched on and matched to anywhere else in the internet be it on social media, profile pics etc. Depending on where there that match is it will be able to obtain more information from the user account that it’s on, name, location etc.

I think it’s going to be impossible to prevent this.

What constitutes “personal”? That’s the question…

Well, for example, anything which one might tell it if using it "as a therapist". I would however ask it stuff like "which supermarket has the cheapest own brand beans" or "which pubs in my area are showing the champions league"

hiintrepidheroes · Today 16:12

I fear for the children of parents doing things like this. They haven’t consented to having their photos uploaded and on top of that who knows how their images are being used and abused.

HolidayHideaway · Today 16:12

Wingwalk · Today 16:07

It is a danger now, as well. The security is extremely iffy. AI is very "clever" and can "hack" its own secure systems. Look up Sandbox escapes. I wouldn't be "telling" it anything personal.

PS sorry for the excessive quotation marks. Reading that back is very wanky but I can't be arsed to rephrase it.

OonaStubbs · Today 16:11

The whole industry of school photos is obsolete now that everyone has a high resolution camera in their pocket and access to photoshop etc.

TheGentleHelper · Today 16:11

The photographer owns the artwork, even if it is your own child.

Once you upload it to AI it is in the cloud forever and everyone to use.

People have already noticed their own likenesses being used to AI adverts. We cannot challenge the legality of it.

Wingwalk · Today 16:07

HolidayHideaway · Today 16:00

I worry re: everyone using it as a very personal therapist - not a danger poss now but if in future it marries up personal info & images?

Perhaps the schools could use the photographers for only people who intend on buying pictures?

They make it a big event each year and probably wastes alot of the schools time, the photographers time and the kids learning time.

'Photographer is in on November 12th, if you'd like to purchase a photo please let us know by October 20th, here is a link to pre purchase your photo'

Solves the issue, I guess

It’s not an event, nor does it take loads of time. My class was had individual photos last week. Twenty six children and it took fifteen minutes, I know this because it was playtime and my children were like cats on a hot tin roof trying to get out.

😂 pretty sure chatgpt isn't using uploaded school photos to make sexual abuse images of children as some kind of ai side hustle!

Are you! Gosh.

I wouldn’t do it because I’d rather just take my own photo.

TheGentleHelper · Today 16:01

The law states that the picture of your child is now the photographers own work.

They can do anything they like with it. I would not allow some randomer to take a photo of my child. The photographer can re-sell it.

HolidayHideaway · Today 16:00

Using images of your child is the worst case scenario.
However the general public really need to question more how much personal information they are feeding into AI. We don’t know where this information goes to and what happens to it, other than we do know it goes to America.
So you need to know if you have uploaded an image to AI, it will use that same image to search other sources on the internet and collect more information related to that and it doesn’t need your permission.
Yes AI is a useful tool but remember whatever you submit is kept so be very careful what you give it.

We just had professional photos done and the watermarks on the sample gallery were insane. I now understand why.

I have them watermark free now because I paid my bill. They are amazing photos and the photographer deserves what she earned.

Except we know it is.

Every image you feed it, teaches it more. Put your blonde four year old in and then some criminal comes along to make an indecent image of a blonde four year old, the image you gave is going to contribute to that in some way. It may look exactly like your child or it may look nothing like your child.

Stop feeding your children to AI.

Tempest is actually my favourite one. Some of the others are absolutely dire.

Oh dear. They must be bad. One year there were so many complaints about how awful the pictures were they had to come back and redo them.

Ultraalox · Today 15:16

Stop putting your children’s faces into AI. And it’s ’child sexual abuse material’ - not child porn.

Napph · Today 15:00

It's a breach of copyright law

SethAndReubenTooSendGaloshes · Today 14:51

Professional school photographers are a job that won't exist in a few years due to AI
Capability to do this stuff exists. People aren't going to not do these things due to ethics unfortunately so people need to adapt.

Switcher · Today 14:49

Thatcannotberight · Today 14:37

Local schools have always used Tempest, which I assumed was a franchise, but apparently they employ and train all their photographers.

Judging by the last few, they need to up their training. We used to be offered three choices and it was hard to decide which one to buy. Now it's two choices and it's trying to decide which is the least worst. 😬.
Thankfully yr 10 and it's the last one. If these companies want to protect their work and income they need to do much better.

Switcher · Today 14:48

Some years the quality has been so bad I've not bought them. I don't try to obtain them for free though because I don't steal things.
